Firstly, this writer would like to apologize for this column’s non-appearance last week. Unfortunately, I found myself to be yet another victim of this tough economy and got laid-off from my full-time job, so writing this was hardly a priority last weekend. Hopefully, I’ll try and get back to a regular weekly schedule from now on, and with so much baseball action to discuss, let’s roll on…
The traditional midpoint of the baseball season is finally upon us. All-Star Break is next week and most teams get a few days rest, except of course the stars chosen by the fans and managers to take part in the mid-season classic. There will be two or three games for most teams after the All-Star game, but this writer is going to take the week off too and return in a fortnight with the latest MLB shenanigans. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves and instead take a look at what happened this past week.
Though the All-Star break is officially next week, for some teams, the mid-point of the season in terms of games played has already been reached. With 81 (or thereabouts) games down, talk often turns to the trade deadline at the end of July, as teams look to bolster their line-ups if they’re still in contention, while those that are struggling begin to wonder if they need to rebuild and ‘sell-off’ some of their assets. Followers of MLB can most likely expect some interesting moves in the upcoming weeks, but there’s still a lot of baseball to be played, so let’s take a look at the news from the divisional races over the past week.
Admittedly, it was a fairly quiet week news-wise, but sometimes that’s not such a bad thing. Major League Baseball has already had its fair share of controversies this season, but as the last of this year’s interleague matches draw to a close and the mid-season All-Star break rapidly approaches, the divisions remain as closely contested as ever, with a few exceptions of course.
Interleague play continued this week and brought some intriguing local contests to the plate including Mets vs Yankees, Cubs vs White Sox, and Dodgers vs Angels, as the AL teams took on the NL teams, mainly from their respective regional divisions.

Baseball continued as usual this week, despite MLB’s best efforts to focus our attention on the annual draft instead. Of course the draft is important, but sadly lacks the excitement of other US sports like basketball and football, as it can take years for drafted ball players to even start a major league game, if they’re lucky to make it that far. Still, as expected, the Washington Nationals chose top prospect Stephen Strasburg, a pitcher who many believe will single-handedly turn the struggling franchise around… yep, he’s been hyped up that much. Only time will tell of course, so in the meantime, on with a look at what happened in the big leagues this week.
As always, another eventful week in the major leagues, mainly concerning two over-40 pitchers who found themselves in the news, but for very different reasons. We’re also pretty much at the one-third mark for the 2009 season, and really it’s only the LA Dodgers who hold any kind of stranglehold on their league, nine games up over their closest rivals. But this is baseball, and anything can happen, and probably will.
Firstly, apologies for this column’s non-appearance last Sunday. I know it was only my second week on the job, but this writer was enjoying a previously planned holiday, taking a break from the game of baseball and instead enjoying the natural joys of a warm and sunny Hawaii.
It was always unlikely that this week’s news would be half as exciting as last week, when we learned of the 50-game suspension of Manny Ramirez, but nevertheless there’s always something going on in Major League Baseball, even if it can’t top yet another drug scandal.
