Nicaragua’s Garcia baffles Britain once again

Great Britain faced Nicaragua this evening for the second time in the 2009 Baseball World Cup and came up short once more.  Team GB ran them closer this time, losing 4-1 compared to the 10-0 drubbing in the first round, but they were flummoxed once again by the Nicaraguan pitcher whose name alone causes confusion.

Diego Garcia Sandino gets listed in the official accounts as Diego Sandino, but the pitcher prefers to go by Diego Garcia.  The discrepancy had Eurosport2 commentator Paul Romanuk scratching his head at first, but it was the British hitters who ended the evening baffled by the pitcher.

Late ten run South Korean barrage halts British comeback

Great Britain were defeated 15-5 by South Korea in Amsterdam today in what would initially appear to be a completely one-sided game.  However, Team GB had staged an excellent comeback in the top of the seventh inning to level the game at 5-5.  Hopes of producing a big upset against the Olympic champions were quickly dashed as the Korean batters blasted six runs in the bottom of the inning to regain control.

A further four runs in the eighth gave them a ten-run lead that saw the game called one inning early, making for a very disappointing end considering the Brits had worked so hard to get back into the contest.

The loss means that Great Britain have slipped to an 0-2 record in the second round of the Baseball World Cup.  They now have a day off before taking on Nicaragua in Rotterdam on Wednesday evening (18.00 BST).  Continue reading

We begin with an upset as the ‘Cuse, at the top end of the standings for almost the whole season, have been knocked out by the Angels. Derrek Lee and Raul Ibanez were the Angels’ star hitters, while Ted Lilly anchored the pitching staff. The ‘Cuse had nice production from its infield, but the lack of saves and holds cost them.

In a matchup which was in a 5-5 tie before Sunday’s games, my Isotopes made it through against the Chasers, taking all six hitting categories thanks to Utley, Dunn, Ramirez and two steals from De Rosa. Matt had a nice week from Cody Ross and Javier Vazquez put up excellent numbers, but it wasn’t to be.

Great Britain vs South Korea: 12.00 BST today

After a creditable 6-0 loss to baseball giants Cuba yesterday, Great Britain’s second round of the Baseball World Cup continues today with a game against South Korea at the Sportpark Ookmeer in Amsterdam.

The Koreans lost 4-2 to the Netherlands yesterday at the same venue in front of 3,500 fans, conceding three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to let an early 2-0 lead go to waste.  They managed only five hits against the Dutch and their 3-to-6 hitters went a combined 0-for-14 with one walk.  Continue reading

Early MLB games this week: Wednesday and Thursday

Great Britain’s World Cup games will naturally be at the forefront of the minds of British baseball fans this week.  There is plenty of time to devote to the World Cup during the evening this week because only Wednesday and Thursday provide any early MLB games to enjoy.  There are seven games in total over those two days, with the potential highlight of the week being a Zack Greinke start on Thursday against the Tigers.

All times are listed in British Summer Time (BST).  Continue reading

Great Britain 0 – Cuba 6

Great Britain lost their opening game of the second round in Haarlem, Netherlands against Cuba this evening; however it was a creditable performance.  Losing 6-0 to the Cubans is no disgrace whatsoever.  In fact, with all due respect to the GB team, that’s probably a better scoreline than many British fans had predicted.

Very frustratingly, the GameTracker service on the official Baseball World Cup website was not working for this game so we were unable to follow the action.  The official box score and play-by-play account has not been published at time of writing, but it should be available soon.  No doubt there will also be a  full game report on the official GB Baseball Team website in due course as well.

Great Britain are back in action at midday British time tomorrow against South Korea, live on Eurosport2.

This Week in MLB

ThisWeekMLBAs we enter the final few weeks of the season, for the teams still in contention, every game and every result takes on even more significance, and even those teams no longer in the race can act as spoilers and upset the delicate balance of both the divisional races and wild-card standings.

Weekly Hit Ground Ball: ‘E’ Numbers and Jeter

‘E’ numbers provoke much examination, scrutiny, comment and concern.  In Europe, such deliberations revolve around artificial food additives.  Companies are now proudly proclaiming the lack of artificial additives in their products, blind to the fact that their statements make loyal customers question why they weren’t so bold in saying the additives were there in the first place.

Yet in the U.S., concerns over ‘E’ numbers do not relate to food.  It’s far more important than that.  The ‘E’ stands for elimination in sporting competitions and MLB.com’s official standings make fans all too aware of their team’s fate.  Continue reading

Great Britain’s Second Round Schedule

As we know Great Britain have qualified as the ‘4th 3rd place’ team, I’ve gone through the second round format and worked out our probable schedule.  This isn’t 100 per cent official, but it should be correct. All times are listed in BST (just add one hour for local time).

Great Britain qualify for Baseball World Cup second round

Great Britain have just qualified for the second round of the Baseball World Cup in dramatic fashion.  GB’s 4-1 victory over Croatia earlier today ensured that Stephan Rapaglia’s men would finish third in Pool D behind Nicaragua (3-0) and Japan (1-2).  While the top two teams in each of the five pools qualified automatically for the second round, only four of the five third-placed teams progressed with them.

For most of the evening, it looked as though Britain would be the team to miss out.  Tomorrow would be filled with gloom at an early exit. That was before a five-run eighth inning by Venezuela against Germany turned everything on its head.  Now we’re playing Cuba at 19.00 BST in Haarlem, Netherlands.
