1990s added to Project Cobb’s archive of national champions of British baseball

Cobb (128x128)At the end of 2010, Project Cobb signed off a productive year of baseball history research with the launch of an archive of national champions of British baseball. This is being jointly collated by Josh Chetwynd, Mark Tobin, and me (Mark’s British Baseball Data website already holds a fair chunk of the information presented).

On launch, the archive held information on just the 21st Century. Now, we’re starting to venture back into the 20th Century, with the addition of the 1990s to the archive. Many gaps are already apparent, but I still think it is a very worthy venture. Of course, if you can fill any of the gaps or know someone else who might be able to, then please leave a comment.

MLB Opening Day on BBC 5 Live Sports Extra

Mlb5XtraHlMLB’s Opening Day is always a special occasion for baseball fans; the long winter days are waved away as seven months of baseball stretch out before our eyes.

However, Opening Day will will be more enjoyable than usual in 2011.  For the first time since 2008, a UK broadcaster will be bringing us live coverage as the season gets underway.  MLB returns to BBC 5 Live Sports Extra today with the Detroit Tigers facing the New York Yankees from 6 p.m.  Justin Verlander and CC Sabathia will be on the mound for what is set to be an exciting way to start the season.

A welcome return

It was on 4 July, Independence Day, last year that British baseball fans welcomed back the sport to a non-subscription service after an all-too-long absence.  As we watched the 2008 World Series on Five, little did we know that the channel was about to move away from the late-night North American sports coverage that had been one of its distinctive (many would say ‘few’) qualities.

It wasn’t just the lack of free-to-air coverage, bringing newcomers to the sport, that made the loss of ‘Baseball on 5’ so disappointing.  The show had become a vital and fun way to bring the British baseball community together.  BBC 5 Live Sports Extra reunited that community last year and Josh Chetwynd, co-presenter on both shows, was as delighted as any fan.

“It was fantastic. Britain’s baseball audience is savvy and enthusiastic and, often, it feels like we’re all part of one family. Beyond the audience it was also wonderful to reunite on air with so many people I was lucky enough to get to work with or know from years past, such as Jonny Gould, Erik Janssen, David Lengel and Nat Coombs”.

The wonders of radio

Things aren’t quite the same as before, with the action now being brought to us in audio rather than visual form.  That doesn’t reduce the enjoyment though as baseball, like cricket, suits radio perfectly, as Josh explains: “I do believe baseball is a wonderfully descriptive game and great broadcasters who have excellent command of language can really make the game sing on the radio. Also, baseball lends itself in many ways to radio with it’s easy pacing.  On TV, people want more fireworks”.

One of the advantages with the radio show is that the team has a greater choice of games to broadcast, rather than simply following the ESPN schedule.  This also means that the commentary is provided by the announcers of one of the two teams involved, adding an extra element to the show.

“There tends to be a hometown bias that’s really fun coming from many of those broadcasters”, Josh notes. “Ron Santo, who sadly passed away this off season, was the best. You could really feel his pain every time his Cubs struggled. TV often lacks that populist feel”.

British baseball fans will be able to enjoy such commentary on a weekly basis this year.  Today’s Tigers-Yankees clash is followed on Sunday with a game between the Boston Red Sox and Texas Rangers.  The focus moves to the National League on the following Sunday when the Phillies take on the Braves, before games between the Blue Jays and Red Sox, and the Yankees and Orioles, round out the month of April.  The current 6 p.m. start time means that the games are coming from the east coast (1 p.m. starts local time) initially, but other areas will be featured as the season progresses.

Hopes for 2011

There is much to look forward to in MLB this year and the 5 Live show is sure to reflect this.  After covering the second half of the 2010 season and the playoffs last year, the team are clearly excited to be back for a full season in 2011.

”As we’re starting from the beginning of the year this season rather than mid-season we really hope we can build some momentum with some regular features, numerous guests – fingers crossed – and the same combination of insightful analysis peppered with some good fun” said Josh.  “I know we really want the show to remain very interactive so hopefully we’ll continue to build on our efforts to get listeners involved, much as we tried to do on Five”.

And there should be plenty of stories for listeners to contact the show about.  ”I’m really geared up for a fantastic season” said Josh. “Clearly, everyone is tipping the Red Sox and the Phillies (with some hold-out Yankees fans). But I always love the unpredictability of the long season. The certainty of the spring always gives way to surprises by mid-summer and I can’t wait for the ride”.

Join Josh, Nat, Jonny and the rest of the team on the journey by tuning in to BBC 5 Live Sports Extra on DAB radio and Digital TV again this season.  The show’s Facebook page can be found here.

2011 MLB predictions

MlbHlSqOpening Day is almost here.

We’ve provided you with a preview to every division and now it’s time for us to offer our predictions for the 2011 season.  I contacted the rest of the BaseballGB writers to seek their views on the division winners, Wild Card winners and how the postseason will play out and added them to my own.

So, here’s how we at BaseballGB predict the season will turn out.  Feel free to add your predictions into the mix via the Comments section below.

AL East

David: Red Sox (Yankees win the Wild Card)
Joe: Red Sox (Yankees win the Wild Card)
Mark: Red Sox (Yankees win the Wild Card)
Matt: Red Sox (Yankees win the Wild Card)
Steve: Red Sox (Rays win the Wild Card)

It’s a clean sweep for the Boston Red Sox and that’s really no surprise when you consider their offseason additions.

Mark has them down as “the best team in baseball” and it’s hard to disagree when you look at their roster.  David neatly sums it up with his prediction on individual performances: “Crawford steals 40 bases and hits 25 HRs. Gonzalez hits 40+ HRs, .310, 120 RBI, and wins AL MVP. Beckett and Papelbon have better seasons than last. Daisuke makes a comeback. Ellsbury leads AL in stolen bases and hits over .300. Youkilis and Pedroia both make All Star team again”.   Continue reading

2011 MLB Preview: American League East

MlbHlSqThe Tampa Bay Rays beat the odds by winning the East in 2010.  After losing several key players over the offseason, can they hold off the Yankees and Red Sox again?

2010 final standings

1. Tampa Bay Rays (96-66)
2. New York Yankees (95-67) * AL Wild Card
3. Boston Red Sox (89-73)
4. Toronto Blue Jays (85-77)
5. Baltimore Orioles (66-96)

The 2010/11 offseason

As always seems to be the case, the AL East was a hive of offseason activity.

The Boston Red Sox were relatively dormant in the 09/10 offseason, but they showed that this was merely the lull before the 10/11 offseason storm by snapping up two of the best offensive players in the game.  The Red Sox completed the long-anticipated trade for first baseman Adrian Gonzalez and then sent shockwaves through the league with a stealth signing of former Rays hero Carl Crawford. These additions more than made up for the loss of catcher Victor Martinez (Detroit) and third baseman Adrian Beltre (Texas) via free agency.

While Boston were booming, the New York Yankees were left frustrated. Their offseason goal seemed simple enough: sign starting pitcher Cliff Lee. Once he decided to go back to Philadelphia instead, they were left high and dry.  Losing Andy Pettitte to retirement further added to their rotation woes and they resorted to picking up some free agent veterans in Freddy Garcia, Bartolo Colon and Kevin Millwood to provide some depth in their organization.  Their offseason efforts were concentrated on re-signing veterans Mariano Rivera and Derek Jeter (the latter in a somewhat strained process) and joining the Red Sox in the ‘Rays Removal’ market by signing Tampa Bay’s closer Rafael Soriano to be their set-up man.  Continue reading

2011 MLB Preview: American League Central

MlbHlSqThe Minnesota Twins were the class team in the Central last year, but the White Sox and Tigers have every intention of putting them under more pressure in 2011.

2010 final standings

1. Minnesota Twins (94-68)
2. Chicago White Sox (88-74)
3. Detroit Tigers (81-81)
4. Cleveland Indians (69-93)
5. Kansas City Royals (67-95)

The 2010/11 offseason

It was a good offseason for the neutrals, as the main challengers made some key additions in an attempt to chase down the reigning champs.

The Tigers made their moves early.  They signed free agent catcher/first baseman/designated hitter Victor Martinez, bringing the former Cleveland Indian back to the AL Central after a year and a half with Boston, and gave Joaquin Benoit, a reliever revelation for the Rays in 2010, a three-year contract.

It looked like Detroit would be the Twins’ only real challenger as the White Sox contemplated entering a rebuilding phase.  However, Chicago’s owner Jerry Reinsdorf had a change of heart and opened the purse strings instead.  That allowed General Manger Kenny Williams to not only re-sign first baseman Paul Konerko and catcher A.J. Pierzynski, but also to bag the big bopper Adam Dunn on a four-year contract after he left the Washington Nationals as a free agent.  Former Twins reliever Jesse Crain and lefty Will Ohman were added to the bullpen, while Matt Thornton was given a contract extension and the closer’s role after Bobby Jenks wore out his welcome and was granted free agency, during which he signed with the Red Sox.  Continue reading

2011 MLB Preview: American League West

MlbHlSqThe American League West may have lost one of the best pitchers in the Majors over the offseason, but there is plenty of talent left in the division.

2010 final standings

1. Texas Rangers (90-72)
2. Oakland Athletics (81-81)
3. Los Angeles Angels (80-82)
4. Seattle Mariners (61-101)

The 2010/11 Offseason

Despite their best efforts, the Texas Rangers were unable to keep starting pitcher Cliff Lee in the AL West when he became a free agent.  Lee was traded by the Philadelphia Phillies to the Seattle Mariners during the 2009/10 offseason, before the M’s traded him on to their division rivals midway through the 2010 season.  Lee decided to complete the circle by heading back to Philadelphia over the offseason, so the Rangers took their money and spent it on another former Mariner: third baseman Adrian Beltre, who played for the Red Sox in 2010.

That was bad news for the Angels.  They lost their number one offseason target when Carl Crawford joined the Red Sox and Beltre was widely considered to be their back-up option before the Rangers swooped in and took him off the market.  The Angels reacted by trading for the Blue Jays’ outfielder Vernon Wells, taking on all but $5m of the $86m due over the remaining four years on his contract.  They’ve acquired a good player in Wells, but it was strange to see them miss out on their primary targets due to refusing to match rival offers, only to take on what was considered an almost unmovable contract.  Continue reading

Herts Spring League 2011

HertsBBThe 2011 Herts Spring League begins this weekend.  The Spring Training competition provides a great opportunity for teams to continue their preparations for the upcoming British baseball season.

The 2011 edition of what has quickly become an established annual event is bigger than ever.

Twenty teams will be competing over three weekends at four different venues.  Herts and Richmond will once again be hosting games and Grovehill Ballpark and Ham Field will be joined this year by the Essex Arrows’ Townmead Field and Lakenheath Diamondbacks’ field at RAF Feltwell.

The Diamondbacks are one of four new teams that will use the HSL as a way to prepare for their debut seasons in the British Baseball leagues. Lakenheath are a United States Air Force team tipped to compete in the National Baseball League, the top-tier of British Baseball, alongside fellow newcomers and HSL participants the Southern Nationals.  The Cambridge Royals and Essex Redbacks 2 are slated to play in the AA-South this year and will play some games in the ‘Minors’ competition in the HSL.

The action begins at Herts on Saturday.  Four teams from the NBL – the Richmond Flames, Bracknell Blazers Southampton Mustangs and Herts Falcons – will meet with the AAA-South Essex Redbacks, the latter getting a chance to see how they match up against some top-tier teams.

There are then 13 games scheduled for Sunday: 5 at Herts, 3 at Richmond and 5 at RAF Feltwell.

Further details can be found on the HSL website.

Confirmation that MLB will be on BBC Radio in 2011

Mlb5XtraHlFollowing on from the post on Sunday, producer Simon Crosse has today confirmed that MLB will be returning to the British airwaves for the 2011 season.

As suspected, coverage begins on Opening Day (Thursday 31 March) with an 18.00 BST show bringing us the Yankees v Tigers game live.  The team will then be back on Sunday (3 April) with Red Sox v Rangers, also starting at 18.00.

A full schedule of probable games for the first two months of the season will be posted on the Show’s Facebook page in due course.

It’s great news that the team will not only be back for the 2011 season, but providing coverage right from Opening Day onwards.

Bumper update of Project Cobb’s digital archives adds a dozen programmes and a leaflet

1980_programmeThe latest update of Project Cobb’s digital archives has just taken place, with the additions comprising a dozen old programmes and a leaflet. The years of origin of these various items span a range between 1953 and 1997, which illustrates Project Cobb’s dual mission of restoring the historical record of the game’s more distant eras on British shores while not neglecting the need to ensure that more recent years of play are well chronicled.

Many of these were scanned from items donated to Project Cobb by Brad Thompson (of the Golders Green Sox and London Warriors), who has been exceedingly generous in helping Project Cobb, after initially being kindly put in touch by Michael Osborn.

2011 MLB Preview: National League East

MlbHlSqThe Phillies topped the NL East in 2010 and made the standout free agent signing of the offseason.  However, the Braves have made additions of their own and with the Marlins bringing through some excellent young players, this division is far from being a forgone conclusion.

2010 final standings

1. Philadelphia Phillies (97-65)
2. Atlanta Braves (91-71)
3. Florida Marlins (80-82)
4. New York Mets (79-83)
5. Washington Nationals (69-93)

The 2010/11 offseason

The Phillies captured the biggest free agent on the market, stunning the New York Yankees and Texas Rangers by stealing starting pitcher Cliff Lee from under their noses.  Lee decided that he enjoyed his brief spell in Philadelphia in 2009 so much that he wanted to return and the Phillies were not going to turn him away.

The addition of Lee to the rotation counterbalanced the loss of outfielder Jayson Werth, who made a surprise free agent switch to the Washington Nationals.  The Nats also signed first baseman Adam LaRoche and the pair will need to make up for the loss of slugger Adam Dunn, who moved to the White Sox as a free agent.  Continue reading
