Nine early MLB games this week

There are nine MLB games scheduled to begin before midnight U.K. time this working week.

Monday and Tuesday don’t produce any early action, although that will allow fans more time to focus on the inevitable flurry of trade rumours as we count down to the non-waiver trade deadline at 21.00 BST (4 p.m. Eastern Time) on Tuesday.

You can be sure that the players traded, and maybe a couple that were not, will be a talking point throughout the six early games on Wednesday, with the Dodgers in particularly being a team heavily linked with making another splash or two.

There are only nine MLB games in total on Thursday, two of which are being played during the day time.  BBC 5 live Sports Extra will provide coverage of the game between the Mets and Giants, no doubt providing plenty of reaction to the trade news as well.

We then have a rare Friday day-game from Washington, as the Marlins and Nationals stage a double-header with the first game due to begin at 21.05 BST.  Josh Johnson’s normal rotation spot would see him in line to start this game; however there’s a chance that he may no longer be a Marlin by the time the game comes around.

All times are in BST.

Trades done with more still to come

We had just reached the point where the national MLB writers in the States were publicly questioning if this year’s non-waiver trade deadline would pass with little fanfare.

There was logic to this line of thinking. While the extra Wild Card has created an additional play-off place to play for, that will not necessarily spur on teams to make a big trade.

Firstly, more teams are potentially still in the race meaning there are less teams clearly falling in the ‘sellers’ bracket than otherwise might be the case.

Secondly, there’s a growing debate on quite how valuable it will be to make the Wild Card ‘play’in’ game.

Obviously it’s much better than missing out altogether – if you’re in it, you can win it – but there’s a fair chance that your season might only be extended by a single game, making it more of a risk to give up too much in the way of prospects.  Add in the fact that teams acquiring top players will no longer receive a compensatory draft pick if they leave as a free agent at the end of the season, and there are various factors that could make teams err on the side of caution and go with what they’ve got.

However, we’ve seen in the last ten days or so that there are teams out there trying to add a player or two to the mix, just as some teams are beginning to look to 2013 and beyond.

The most significant organizational decision has been made by the Miami Marlins.

I was cautious about jumping on the Marlins’ bandwagon prior to the season – I couldn’t quite see why so many were ready to hand them the division after finishing 30 games out last year – and 2012 has not turned out the way the team had hoped, leading to them making players available for the right price.

The first beneficiaries have been the Detroit Tigers, who traded for Anibal Sanchez and Omar Infante to strengthen their challenge in the AL Central. Unsurprisingly, the General Manager of the Chicago White Sox, Kenny Williams, has been active too and while his efforts to acquire Zack Greinke did not pay off, he took a chance on Francisco Liriano yesterday and has added Brett Myers to the bullpen from the Astros.

The Marlins then parted ways with the previous face of the franchise Hanley Ramirez, sending him to the Los Angeles Dodgers who were in desperate need of some help in scoring runs.  With new ownership now in place, it seems likely that the Dodgers will continue to look to add to their roster (Ryan Dempster being one obvious target), while the San Francisco Giants (aside from signing Marco Scutaro) and the Arizona Diamondbacks don’t appear to be on the verge of making any significant upgrades in the battle for the NL West.

Miami’s impact on the trade market might not end there.  Every team in contention would love to acquire an ace-type pitcher like Josh Johnson. However, the Marlins’ recent moves are not a sign that they are heading into a three year rebuilding project. If healthy – a big ‘if’ of course – Johnson will play a huge role in the Marlins bouncing back next season, so they will have to be bowled over to part with their ace.

I would guess that he will still be a Marlin come 1 August, although a guess is as far as I’ll go when it comes to predicting anything about this trade deadline.

Wandy Rodriguez’s career in an Astros uniform has been on borrowed time for at least a year and he finally changed teams in a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates.  The Buccos have two strong opponents to contend with in the NL Central, the Reds and Cardinals, and if they can add a bat without giving up one of their better prospects then they could still be active on the trade market.

The Phillies’ Shane Victorino keeps being mentioned as a possible target, even though the Pirates already have a star manning centrefield in Andrew McCutchen.  Victorino is on course to become a free agent at the end of the season and the Phillies are unlikely to have the funds to keep him after their recent major outlay.

The Phillies took arguably the biggest potential trade target, and off-season free agent target, off the market by coming to terms with Cole Hamels on a six-year, $144m contract extension. That amounts to just a shade under £300k per week at the current exchange rate.

They now have a series of substantial financial commitments for 2013 and beyond. Hamels, Cliff Lee, Roy Halladay, Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Jonathan Papelbon and Jimmy Rollins will take up just over $128m of payroll for seven slots on the 25-man roster. If Hunter Pence stays for his final year before free agency, that will go up to over $140m for eight players.

They unquestionably amount to a quality core of players, but as this year has showed committing so much money to that core makes you vulnerable if any miss significant time due to injuries. The NL East promises to be a fascinating division over the next few seasons.

The Oakland A’s recent blistering form has also upped the stakes in the AL West.  The Los Angeles Angels flashed the cash over the offseason by signing Albert Pujols and C.J. Wilson and now they’ve added another top talent in Zack Greinke, acquired in a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers this past week.

The fact that the Texas Rangers were so keen to add Greinke as well suggests this could be a telling blow at the top of the division, making it all the more likely that the Rangers will seek to counter with a move of their own, especially after losing Colby Lewis to a season-ending injury.

We’ve already had a higher number of significant trades than was anticipated just a few weeks ago.  Don’t be surprised if several more are made before the end of Tuesday.

Greinke’s Angels debut and more

Sunday brings a great group of games as the MLB trade rumours go into overdrive in the lead-up to the 31 July non-waiver deadline.

Zack Greinke makes his debut for the Angels today having been traded by the Brewers a couple of days ago, while Roy Halladay is due to come off the Disabled List and make his return with the Phillies in a strong pitching match-up with Tim Hudson and the Braves.

Both BBC 5 Live Sports Extra and ESPN America are scheduled to broadcast the three-game series finale between the Dodgers and Giants. The Dodgers have won the first two games, including a 10-0 thumping yesterday, to move within one game of the Giants at the top of the NL West.

All times are in BST.

18.07. Detroit at Toronto (Fister – Cecil)

Five MLB games on Saturday evening

Many of the British nation are currently under the spell of Olympic-mania after last night’s Opening Ceremony.

There is undoubtedly a lot to be excited about as a sports fan; however it’s difficult not to mix in a hint of disappointment as a baseball fan.

We’ve known for a depressingly long time that our sport, alongside softball, would not be a part of London 2012, but the full impact of that is really hitting home now as we can all see just how incredible it would have been.

There’s no Olympic baseball tournament, but on Saturday evening MLB provides five games that we can watch before midnight to add to our sporting weekend.  All times are in BST.

18.05. St. Louis at Chicago Cubs (Kelly – Samardzija)
18.07. Detroit at Toronto (Sanchez – Alvarez) *ESPN America

The Cardinals and Cubs were the warm-up act for my Olympic ceremony viewing last night and there was no shortage of action at Wrigley Field. The Cards won 9-6 and took Cubs starter Travis Wood deep five times.  Jeff Samardzija looks to lead the fightback today.  Meanwhile Anibal Sanchez makes his Tigers debut in Toronto having been acquired by Detroit in a trade with the Miami Marlins earlier this week.

21.05. Boston at NY Yankees (Lester – Sabathia) *ESPN America
21.05. LA Dodgers at San Francisco (Billingsley – Zito)
21.10. Kansas City at Seattle (Chen – Millwood)

We’ve got games from two of the great baseball rivalries starting at 21.05 and they should give us a chance to see two of the biggest names to have found new teams in the past week.

Hanley Ramirez is quickly settling into life as a Dodger and he hit a two-run homer in the tenth inning yesterday to lead his team past the Giants. Ichiro Suzuki scored two of the Yankees’ 10 runs against Boston last night as the Bronx Bombers won the first game of a series that they hope will see them push their bitter rivals even further away from playoff contention.

Fans of the Royals and Mariners likely to be the only ones turning their attention to Safeco Field rather than Yankee Stadium or AT&T Park.

All of these games are available to watch live via the MLB.TV subscription at MLB.com, while ESPN America has a baseball triple-header with the two games noted above being followed by Cincinnati at Colorado from 1 a.m.  The full schedule for today’s games can be found on MLB.com.

British Baseball Beat: Good weather at last

Apologies for the lack of the typical British Baseball Beat column over the last few weeks.

Just a quick round-up of some of the action …

The National Baseball League playoff race is really heating up to match the rise in temperature.

The London Mets split a double-header with the Herts Falcons at Finsbury Park on 15 July and then split another double-header on Saturday 21st, this time against the Lakenheath Diamondbacks, to put them on a 12-7 record heading into the NBL event on Sunday 22nd.

Herts Baseball Club staged the event and, judging by the BBF report, it produced a fantastic day of baseball.

The Mets and Harlow Nationals could not be split over the regulation nine innings and it wasn’t until the eleventh frame that a winner could be decided, going in favour of the Nationals by a score of 12-11. That victory gave Harlow a league-leading 16-4 record.

Other winners on the day included the Croydon Pirates and the Southampton Mustangs, who needed to get back to winning ways after dropping four in a row. The Mustangs face two difficult home games against the Mets this Sunday, while the Nationals host the Diamondbacks. Herts Falcons are in Croydon taking on the Pirates, with the Essex Arrows travelling to Bracknell to face the Blazers.

Elsewhere, the Liverpool Trojans suffered their second loss of the season on Sunday in Triple-A, with their website stating that the game against Menwith Hill Patriots was an “absolute classic”.  The Trojans had been victorious by a score of 7-2 in the opener, but the Patriots prevailed in an 11-10 walk-off.  As the Trojans put it: “credit must go to both teams who put on a great display of baseball in a thoroughly exciting and entertaining game”.

Meanwhile there was drama in Nottingham as Sebastian O’Dell hit a two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth to secure the AA-Midlands division for the Rebels.

With the weather forecast looking good again for this weekend, teams throughout the country will be looking to push on and follow the Rebels’ lead by securing playoff places. The National Baseball Championship is fast approaching and BBF President Mark Salter stated this week that Herts Baseball Club are the likely hosts for the season finale one again.

Full details from all of the action around the leagues can of course be found on the BBF website.

Putting the A’s in Amazing

Oakland A'sMy original plans for regular features here at BaseballGB during the 2012 season got moved around a bit, for various reasons.

One that completely fell by the wayside was a regular column (weekly or maybe bi-weekly) about supporting the Oakland A’s. Most, if not all, people following baseball will support a team and the emotions, frustrations and occasional excitement that we live through provide a never-ending source of stories to tell.

2012 seemed like a good year to start on this feature because my expectation, like most A’s fans, was that this was going to feel like a long season. From celebrating the fleeting moments of promise from some of our younger players to lamenting a run of poor results as a basic form of therapy, documenting my thoughts would be a good way to get through the year.

I even produced a list of pun-tastic names for the said column (Thank you for the A’s, A’s and Confused etc).

I’ll leave those names to one side, but I’m going to move ahead with putting together some thoughts on the A’s season as it’s turning out to be a much better season than I or most other A’s fans could have hoped for.

The A’s had won 9 of their previous 10 games heading into last week and had a difficult-looking two series in prospect against the Rangers (2 games) and the Yankees (4). Playing .500 over those six games would have been a respectable result considering the standard of opposition and a great way to follow up that 9-1 sequence.

As it turned out, the A’s shared a win apiece with Texas and then swept the four-game series over the Yankees. Fourteen wins from your last sixteen games will get you noticed and national baseball writers, hitherto paying little attention to one of the two non-Rangers and Angels AL West teams, are starting to question whether this Oakland team are a genuine playoff contender.

Looking at the A’s recent form from an analytical point of view does produce a number of red flags that make it seem likely that it isn’t sustainable.

For example, we have the worst batting average in the Majors (.228) and the third-worst OPS (.680), while our pitching staff has the second-lowest number of strikeouts (625). The manner of our recent victories also may be telling. Winning one-run games and relying on walk-offs is a lot of fun, but it’s also a sign that we are only just scraping through. There is a sense that we’re using smoke and mirrors to pull this off and that the magic will only last for so long.

I don’t take any offence at this argument because there is clearly some truth to it. The point is, as a fan, I don’t much care. If the magic wears off soon then so be it; there’s no doubt that it all feels pretty magical at the moment.

Time and time again we’ve suffered at the hands of the Yankees. Even when things were going well, you just knew that the Bronx Bombers would find a way to battle back and break your heart once again. For one four-game series that was turned on its head. This time it was the A’s that always seemed destined to fight back and come out on top.

As Coco Crisp put it: “It definitely feels good to battle and be victorious against the best teams, on paper, in the game … you can look up and down a lot of lineups like Detroit, or the Angels, the teams with high payrolls. Obviously they have high payrolls for a reason, because the players on the team deserve it. When we battle against those guys and come out with wins, it’s definitely a great feeling”. Amen to that.

No one can expect a team to continue such incredible form for ever. The A’s will come back down to earth, the question is will that still involve winning our share of games or is a slump on the horizon?

After taking Monday off, the A’s are scheduled to play on 16 consecutive days, starting with a three-game series in Toronto before heading to Baltimore, so the next couple of weeks will be a real test of the A’s credentials.

12 early MLB games this week

This is always an interesting part of the MLB calendar.

The All-Star Break is in the rear-view mirror while the 31 July non-waiver trade deadline is rapidly approaching, meaning that teams are asking themselves whether they are in the play-off race or not.

Sometimes a hot or cold streak during this little period can be the deciding factor on whether a team adds an extra player or two or decides to look ahead to next season.

We can also see probable pitchers suddenly change as a player scheduled to take the mound for one team gets moved onto another.

Looking at the pre-midnight starts this working week, the two names that jump out are the Cubs’ Ryan Dempster and Matt Garza. They are currently scheduled to start for Chicago on Wednesday and Friday respectively, but they may find themselves on another team by that point.  James Shields has also been touted as a potential trade chip if the Rays feel a pressing need to upgrade their offence before the window shuts, so he may or may not be facing Baltimore in the BBC 5 Live Sports Extra game this Thursday.

Here is the full list of MLB games scheduled to start before midnight U.K. time this working week. Wednesday looks to be a particularly promising day with Stephen Strasburg, Jake Peavy, Jered Weaver and Tim Lincecum (who has looked a bit more like his old self in his previous two starts against the Astros and Phillies) set to start for their respective teams.

All times are in BST.

Set for sweeps on Sunday

I always look forward to the Sunday slate of baseball games, but my enthusiasm is especially high today thanks to the brilliant recent form shown by the Oakland A’s.

My expectations were suitably modest coming into the season; however it’s hard not to dream when your team has won 13 of their last 15 games, including the first three games of a four-game series against the New York Yankees (who have dominated the A’s at the Coliseum in recent times).

Oakland are one of nine teams trying to complete a series sweep today. All times are in BST.

01.00. Texas at LA Angels (Harrison – Haren) *ESPN America

Of the other broom-bearers, arguably the most determined will be the Detroit Tigers. They’ve used the first two games of their current series to climb over the Chicago White Sox into first place in the AL Central. Taking the third and final game against the Sox would be seen by Detroit as a real statement of intent, while Chicago has an opportunity to not only salvage a win from the series but to jump straight back to the top of the division in the process.

Elsewhere, the top NL Central and West teams are all pushing each other to keep their winning runs going. The Giants, Dodgers and D-Backs in the West, and the Pirates, Reds and Cardinals in the Central, will all be trying to complete series sweeps today.

Yesterday St. Louis produced one of the more unlikely results we’ll see in the 2012 season as they beat the Cubs 12-0 with all of the runs being scored in a single inning (the bottom of the seventh).  I don’t know what the Cardinals did during the seventh-inning stretch, but they would be well advised to replicate it exactly today. Coverage of that game can be found on BBC 5 Live Sports Extra from 19.15 after the day’s play at The Oval.

Meanwhile the Rangers and Angels are tied 1-1 heading into the rubber match of their latest series in the ESPN Sunday Night Game that will complete an MLB triple-header on ESPN America.

All of these games are available to watch live via the MLB.TV subscription at MLB.com. BBC 5 Live Sports Extra can be found on digital radio, digital TV and on the BBC.co.uk website (coverage on the website is only available to UK residents).

Spoilt for choice on Saturday

After a thrilling Friday night, MLB produces five early games on Saturday that should all provide plenty of excitement.

18.05. Atlanta at Washington (Sheets – Jackson)

There will not be many better comebacks than the one pulled off by Atlanta last night. Coming back from 9-0 down to take a 10-9 lead was impressive enough, but to fight back again after Danny Espinosa had tied the game at 10-10 in the bottom of the ninth made the Braves’ victory all the more remarkable.

Remarkable is also a good word to describe Ben Sheets. He pitched extremely well in his first start after 2 years out injured. We’ll see if he can produce a repeat performance today in the first game of a double-header, the second game of which will complete a baseball triple-header on ESPN America.

18.10. L.A. Dodgers at N.Y. Mets (Capuano – Batista) *ESPN America

The Dodgers edged past the Mets 7-6 yesterday with Matt Kemp predictably leading the charge. He hit his 14th home run off the season yesterday as rumours continue to circulate about his team adding a player or two to the roster before the 31 July trade deadline. There was some talk of the Mets calling up top prospect Matt Harvey to start this game, but instead they’ll go with the veteran Batista.

21.05. San Francisco at Philadelphia (Cain – Hamels)

This should be an absolute cracker of a game. A pitching match-up between Matt Cain and Cole Hamels would be enough of a draw in any circumstances, but there’s an extra element to the story today with Hamels’ Phillies future in doubt. The contract extension signed earlier this season by Cain to commit his future with the Giants has become a starting point for Hamels’ negotiations with the Phillies and there does appear to be a growing feeling that the two sides may come to an agreement; however Phillies fans will arrive at Citizens Bank Park today knowing that this may be the last time they watch Hamels pitching in their uniform at this ballpark.

21.05. Chicago White Sox at Detroit Tigers (Sale – Porcello)

The Tigers are chasing down the White Sox in the AL Central and now trail by only half a game after Justin Verlander helped the home team to a 4-2 victory last night. Chris Sale has been one of the stars of the 2012 season so far and the left-hander will look to get his team back on track today.

21.05. Texas at L.A. Angels (Darvish – Santana) *ESPN America

We’re really spoilt for choice at 21.05 today. The two big powers in the AL West (although keep an eye out for the red-hot A’s) are colliding this weekend and the Angels took first blood on Friday with a 6-1 win that brings them within 5 games of their rivals at the top of the division and keeps them .5 ahead in the Wild Card race. Yu Darvish had a poor time of things last time out against the Mariners so today’s game will be a good test for the Japanese star.

All of these games are available to watch live via the MLB.TV subscription at MLB.com, while ESPN America has a baseball triple-header as noted above.  The full schedule for today’s games can be found onMLB.com.
