Samardzija gets a W

MlbHlSqA superficial glimpse at Jeff Samardzija’s recent record on the mound would have given you the impression that he wasn’t having much of a season so far.

Before yesterday his 2014 campaign consisted of ten starts that had left him with four losses and no wins to his name; however, when you’re pitching for a team that is in rebuilding mode – i.e. not really putting a competitive team on the field at the Major League level – pitching wins can be hard to come by.

Samardzija was doing an excellent job of keeping the opposition from scoring, posting a 1.46 ERA, and he was also pitching deep into games, completing at least seven innings on seven occasions over his first ten starts.

Quite simply, the 0 next to his name didn’t deserve to count against him. His team, the Chicago Cubs, were doing precious little to support him in the task of winning games and that was most clearly in evidence on 5 May when he pitched nine innings against cross-town rivals the White Sox, giving up only one unearned run, and still saw his team lose 3-1 in extra innings (Samardzija getting a ‘ no decision’).

So let’s put his victory yesterday against the Giants into some perspective. It was both something to celebrate – his first pitching win in 16 attempts – and something to recognise as being largely meaningless.  A pitcher’s win-loss record is as much a reflection on the team as it is on that individual’s own performance beyond the extremes (it’s safe to assume a pitcher with a 20-2 record is performing pretty well, just as a 3-18 record is most likely a fair indication that they haven’t had the season they hoped for).

The saving grace for pitchers is that the designation of a pitching win or loss works both ways.

Clay Buchholz was part of the Boston Red Sox team that managed to snap their 10-game losing streak yesterday with an 8-6 victory over the Atlanta Braves. The fact that he gave up six runs in three innings, walking eight Braves in the process, will not show up his personal loss column, although the 7.02 ERA next his name tells you that his 2-4 win-loss record once again isn’t telling you the whole story

MLB this Week: Memorial Day and more

CovMLBUK2014Monday is Memorial Day in the States so we have a whole host of early games to enjoy as a way to round out the Bank Holiday weekend.

No team is more desperate for a win than the Boston Red Sox. The reigning World Series champs have plummeted to the bottom of the AL East due to losing ten games in a row and it is only the Houston Astros that are keeping them from having the worst win-loss record in the American League.

Boston fans will be hoping that a switch to interleague play can be a catalyst to an upturn in their fortunes as they head to Turner Field for two games against the Atlanta Braves to start the week before both teams travel to Boston for two more games on Wednesday and Thursday.

The San Francisco Giants enter the week with the best win-loss record in MLB (32-18) and they are playing two day-games this working week at Wrigley Field against the Chicago Cubs. The Giants will send Yusmeiro Petit to the mound on Monday in a spot-start in place of the injured Matt Cain; Tim Lincecum will be the starting pitcher for San Francisco on Wednesday.

There are also two early games this week from the series between the Pirates and Mets, Rangers and Twins, and Tigers and A’s.

Fans of the LA Angels get a rare chance to see their team in action in a working week day-game on Monday as they play the first of a four-game series in Seattle.

All times are in BST.

MLB this Week: Early games on Wednesday and Thursday

CovMLBUK2014All of the MLB games starting before midnight U.K. time this working week are taking place on either Wednesday or Thursday.

Although that means we have three ’empty’ evenings, the games we can watch at a convenient time do provide a good mix of teams and starting pitchers.

Wednesday’s ‘early’ schedule begins with a Max Scherzer start against the Indians and ends with a match-up in Washington between two pitchers who have been very pleasant surprises for their teams so far this season.

In between we have a game between AL West rivals in the Mariners and Rangers and a rare visit to Wrigley Field by the New York Yankees.

There are strong starting pitchers in all of the five early games scheduled for Thursday. Cole Hamels collected his 100th career win last time out and will go for number 101 against the Marlins. Rick Porcello looks to be fulfilling his promise at last for the Tigers and he’ll take his excellent recent form into a potential pitching classic against the Rangers with Yu Darvish on the mound for Texas.

Jorge De La Rosa is another pitcher who has performed well of late and in his last start he took a no-hitter into the seventh inning. He should match up against Tim Hudson who has proved to be a very effective off-season acquisition by the Giants.

Mark Buerhle has been outstanding for the Blue Jays up to this point and he’ll look to keep that going at Fenway Park against Jon Lester, whilst there will a match-up at Tropicana Field between two of the more promising young pitchers in the American League in Sonny Gray and Chris Archer.

Early game totals so far

This is the eighth week of the 2014 MLB regular season and so far it has been the Minnesota Twins who have given British fans the most opportunities to watch them at a convenient time during the working week.

Twelve Twins games have been scheduled before midnight U.K. time, with the perennial league-leaders in day-games the Chicago Cubs having played 11, the same number as the Detroit Tigers (another regular at the top of the day-game charts).

At the other end of the scale, the LA Angels have had only two ‘early’ games and that meagre return is in line with recent seasons. In my recent study of working week day-games over the last three MLB seasons, available in Volume 1 of the Project COBB “This Diamond Isle” anthology, the Angels played in the least amount of day-games of any team in the Majors (40 combined over the 2011-2013 seasons).

So far this season the Angels are closely followed by the Astros, Blue Jays and Yankees who have all played in only three early games.

All of these games are available to watch live via the MLB.TV subscription at MLB.com. The early games being shown on ESPN are highlighted above. The complete schedule for this week’s MLB games can be found on MLB.com

British Baseball Beat: Rain again

BBBBad weather was a factor again last weekend as teams across the country battled wind and rain to get their games in.

The Northern section didn’t have much luck as all of the scheduled games in both Triple-A and Double-A were sunk by heavy rain.

However, things were a bit brighter down south where some teams were able to take to the field.

Where the rain stayed away

In the National Baseball League (NBL), the Southampton Mustangs were one of several teams delighted to be able to get some game-time after several weeks on the sidelines. They extended their unbeaten run to 20 regular season games, stretching back into last season, with two victories over the Essex Arrows and their 4-0 start to the season keeps them at the top of the league. Still, the Arrows pushed them close as both games were decided by a single run, showing that whilst the Mustangs may be out in front, they are far from being out of reach of the other teams.

The Arrows are 5-3 following those two losses, a win-loss record matched by the London Mets after they picked up two wins against the South London Pirates. The Bracknell Blazers also picked up two good wins at the expense of the Herts Falcons. The Falcons slipped to a 1-3 start as a result, a disappointing and perhaps not-too-surprising consequence as injuries and the loss of some key players has left them with a weaker roster than the one that topped the NBL with a 24-4 record last season. They’ll be keen to fight back quickly, that’s for sure.

In the AAA-Central division, the Cambridge Royals are continuing to lead the way thanks to strong pitching and more-than-timely hitting. They picked up two more wins last Sunday against the Leicester Blue Sox and will put a 6-0 record on the line this Sunday in a double-header at Birmingham against the Maple Leafs.

The London Mammoths are another team that has come off the diamond with that winning feeling every time so far this season. They’ve started their AA-South campaign with four consecutive wins, the latest a 6-5 rain-soaked battle against the Richmond Dragons. The Mammoths’ Single-A clubmates, the Marauders, are also enjoying an unbeaten start to the season (3-0), whilst Haverhill Blackjacks earned a 13-9 win at home against Kent Mariners to make it two wins from two for them.

GB All-Star Series

The BBF league action was joined last weekend by the second round of the inaugural Great Britain All-Star Series. Judging by Marty Cullen’s report on the BBF website, the series is producing some great games and working well as a chance to get GB youngsters playing together in competitive contests.

We begin with the biggest winners of the week as Matt’s Chasers thumped Jesmond Dennings 10-1. Miguel Cabrera homered three times and drove in 10, Teixeira went deep twice and Pence scored eight runs. Scherzer won both of his starts, Hunter had three saves and Ross and Hudson helped take ERA and WHIP. With rare cold weeks for Trout and Pujols, Nolan Arenado was the pick of Jesmond’s hitters, even though his hitting streak was snapped at 28 games. Perkins had three saves, Bailey struck out 11 and Teheran and Harrison both pitched well.

Finally, Iron Men and my Isotopes finished 5-5. Rodney had four saves for Iron Men, while Samardzija struck out 14, combining with Wheeler and Strasburg to take ERA and WHIP. Asdrubal Cabrera was the difference in runs, while Adam Jones homered three times and helped to win average. Hanley and Puig each hit a pair of homers for my team, with Rios swiping a pair of bases. Four different pitchers claimed wins, including Harang and Doolittle, who struck out nine and eight respectively. That’s three ties in six weeks for my team, and while it’s good to be tough to beat, the Isotopes could really use a win.

Weekly Hit Ground Ball: Unlucky Yu

Just a short reflection on the most memorable moment of the past week in MLB.

‘(Un)Lucky Y(o)u’ by the Lightning Seeds

You’ve done it again
The night would soon belong to you
A no-hitter loomed
It seemed this time nothing could stop it coming true

But Yu, it didn’t happen

Ooh-ooh-eee-ooh
Ooh-ooh-eee-ooh-eee-ooh-eee-ooh

No-hitter blues now, unlucky Yu

Unlucky Yu
What more could you do
Except get one more out
Unlucky Yu

….

Coming within a single out of pitching a no-hitter is heartbreaking enough. Doing it twice seems a cruel twist of fate handed down by the baseball gods.

The Texas Rangers’ Yu Darvish could manage a wry smile at David Ortiz’s ground-ball eluding Elvis Andrus with two outs in the eighth inning (it was fitting that the Rangers were playing a defensive shift at the key moment – nothing defines the 2014 season so far quite like teams moving their infielders about).

It’s tempting to say that it’s inevitable Darvish will get a no-no at some point considering how close he’s come to it on several occasions. He has more than lived up to his ace-type billing since making the move from Japan and he has the ability to dominate teams whenever he’s on top of his game.

Yet perhaps luck will determine that he remains the nearly no-hitter man for the rest of his career.

Nothing is ever certain in baseball, which is exactly why we are so captivated by the sport.

Stanton, Jenninghs, Hamilton and Walker keyed an offensive sweep, while Cecil and Casilla ensured victory by winning holds. The Chasers had plenty of excellent pitching, as the staff posted a 1.7ERA and a sub-0.9 WHIP thanks to Scherzer, Lester and Hudson and a bullpen which did not allow an earned run.
