BGB Fantasy League 2014: Week 20

The race is on for a top-eight place in the BaseballGB fantasy league. There are just two weeks of the regular season left and there’s been a change at the top…

Norwich have made the race for first very interesting after their 11-0 thumping of the RBIs, falling a steal shy of a clean sweep. Justin Upton, Ozuna and Aybar were the offensive stars, while Porcello, Cobb, Fiers and Jansen were all in great form on the mound. The RBIs had a multi-homer week from Posey and four players swiped bases.

The Sox didn’t win a single pitching category, as the hitters carried the load. Rizzo and Gordon hit two homers each, Longoria drove in six and Rollins swiped a pair of bases. Bits & Bytes took four pitching categories thanks to Kershaw and Hughes.

MLB this Week: Early games on Wednesday and Thursday

CovMLBUK2014The final week of August offers slim pickings when it comes to MLB games taking place during the British evening.

Wednesday and Thursday are the only days this working week that offer any day-games, subject to a rainout or two causing an unexpected doubleheader.

The potential highlight of the week comes on Wednesday when the court will be in session at Safeco Field. ‘King’ Felix Hernandez is the front runner for the AL Cy Young award and he’ll look to further his case against the Rangers whilst aiding Seattle’s playoff push. Unfortunately Seattle have changed their plans and pushed Hernandez’s next start back one day, so we will not be able to enjoy watching him pitch after all this week. The Mariners will find a spot-starter for the game instead.

Weekly Hit Ground Ball: Royals for real

WHGB11Sky Sports News have a habit of making mistakes on their MLB scrolling news section, such as mixing up team names with other U.S. sports or getting player names wrong.

Consequently when it popped up on Sunday morning at breakfast that the Kansas City Royals had a three game lead in AL Central and had won 24 of their last 30 games, I wasn’t prepared to believe it until checking the facts myself.

The doubt wasn’t just down to typical SSN sloppiness but also a reflection on the fact that you don’t associate the Royals with leading or winning much.

That’s not been their way for many years and yet, sure enough, they have overhauled the Detroit Tigers and have been playing some great baseball over the past month or so.

Based on Fangraphs, over the last 30 days the Royals’ batting production has been the second best in MLB based on a 5.5 Wins Above Replacement (WAR) mark, with only the even-more-unfancied Minnesota Twins bettering that with a 6.2 WAR. The pitching sits 10th based on WAR over the same span, more than holding their end up to support the hitters.

Over the season so far Alex Gordon has been the actual and symbolic leader of the Royals’ resurgence. He struggled initially when he made the Majors in 2007 whilst trying to live up to the expectations of being the next George Brett as a star Royals third baseman.

A move to left field and an impressive determination to learn from his difficult days has turned Gordon into one of the better players in the American League over the past few seasons.

According to FanGraphs, Gordon is having the best season of any position player in the Majors this season with a 5.8 WAR, bettered only by pitcher Felix Hernandez with a 6.2 mark.

Part of Gordon’s standing comes from a large boost due to FanGraphs’ calculations of his defensive value, which – purely from a sniff-test point of view rather than anything more studied – often seem a little overly generous to me.

Baseball-Reference’s version of WAR leaves Gordon sitting just outside the top ten of all MLB players this season and eighth among position players, which seems more appropriate. He’s not been quite the best player in the game, but he’s been among the elite and is having a tremendous year.

The Royals are also receiving an impressive return this season from James Shields and Wade Davis, the two players they acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays prior to the 2013 season for their best prospect Wil Myers in a deal that provoked considerable negative comment against the Royals’ General Manager Dayton Moore (whose track record had not built up much in the way of credit or benefit of the doubt, to say the least).

Despite finishing 2013 ten games over .500 with an 86-76 win-loss record, missing out on the playoffs yet again immediately cast more doubt on the wisdom of trading away Myers for short-term gains.

Royals fans will be more than happy with the decision if their team is able to hold onto their division lead and play postseason baseball for the first time in a long time, with Shields and Davis contributing handsomely to the effort from the mound alongside another pitcher, Jason Vargas, who has performed much better than the naysayers predicted when he was signed as a free agent over the past offseason.

In fact, the ESPN.com game report from the Royals’ win over the Texas Rangers on Saturday included this nugget from their Stats and Information team that shows Kansas City may well have every reason to be getting excited about their baseball team once again:

“Following Saturday’s games, the Royals now lead the AL Central by 3 games. This is the furthest into a season they have led the division by at least 3 games since 1985. That was the last time they made the postseason and the only season in which they won the World Series”.

MLB Commissioner Bud Selig has put ‘parity’ among clubs as one of the key cornerstones of his regime, alongside revenue-raising and labour peace. Like much else during his tenure, the positive value of Selig’s actions can be debated. Is this parity merely produced by mediocrity at the expense of seeing truly great teams battling it out and lowering the bar to reaching the playoffs with first the wild card and then the recent introduction of a second wild card team? If so, is that good for baseball or not?

Whatever your personal view, the Royals will be delighted to make the postseason regardless and it would be seen as a fitting end to Selig’s last year as Commissioner if it happened.

BGB Fantasy League 2014: Week 19

With just a few weeks left until the playoffs begin, which teams are picking up the pace and who is struggling to stay the course?

Team R HR RBI SB AVG OPS W SV K HLD ERA WHIP Score
Mighty Slugs 35 9 27 8 .275 .821 4 3 54 1 2.48 1.17 11
Weston-Super-Sox 31 8 26 4 .278 .767 0 3 16 0 1.80 1.00 1

We begin with the biggest winners of the week, as the Slugs hammered the Sox 11-1. Admittedly this was helped with a sweep of the pitching categories as the Sox failed to meet the 20-inning minimum requirement, but the Slugs were still on course for a healthy win regardless. Donaldson, Carpenter and JD Martinez were the top hitters while Gordon swiped five bases. McHugh won both his starts, Arrieta struck out 13 and Betances had a win and a hold. Morneau and Altuve salvaged average for the Sox.

Team R HR RBI SB AVG OPS W SV K HLD ERA WHIP Score
Norwich No II 36 6 30 3 .251 .752 3 5 51 3 3.46 1.23 9
The Cheddar Chasers 22 6 26 2 .269 .738 2 3 44 4 3.98 1.33 2

It was a great week for Norwich, who shot up the standings with their 9-2 score against the Chasers. Fiers, Britton and Cobb helped the pitchers take every category bar holds, while Justin Upton, Seager and Freeman had big weeks with the bat. Joe Smith picked up four holds for the Chasers, while Ortiz and Miguel Cabrera helped take average.

Team R HR RBI SB AVG OPS W SV K HLD ERA WHIP Score

Richie’s RBI’s 29 5 21 4 .250 .690 5 0 32 2 3.50 1.10 9

I have to tip my cap to the RBIs, who picked up a well-deserved 9-2 win against my Isotopes. LaRoche, Cano and Blackmon led the offense to five out of six categories, falling one RBI short of a sweep. Young and a pair of wins and led the staff in ERA and strikeouts while Will Smith took care of holds. Puig and Utley forced a tie in RBIs, Archer struck out 12 and Soriano had three saves.

London Bananas 20 2 31 7 .225 .613 1 5 51 0 3.86 1.40 4

The Riverkings got the better of the Bananas 7-4. Both teams will have better weeks with the bats, but Cespedes, Desmond and Santana helped take four offensive categories while Sale made the difference in ERA and WHIP. The Bananas had RBIs and steals from Escobar and Marte while Reed and K-Rod had two saves each and Latos struck out 12.

Enfield Butchers 26 5 27 3 .321 .870 4 7 48 6 3.48 1.18 7

The Butchers stay top after a very tight 7-5 win against the Knights. Morse batted .643 for the week, Yelich hit .464 and made the difference in runs and steals while Calhoun homered twice. Kimbrel and Holland each had three saves while Clippard had a busy week, collecting four holds. Harper and Gyorko helped the Knights win RBIs, while Gallardo won both his starts, making a big difference in ERA and WHIP, and Minor struck out 14.

Beck ‘Nams (GB) 26 1 19 4 .251 .643 2 0 57 4 4.03 1.17 6

Beck ‘Nams squeezed through 6-5 against Bits & Bytes, with Reyes and Aoki the most influential hitters. The red-hot Kluber had 10 strikeouts, as did Shelby Miller, while Andrew Miller took care of holds. Kendrick helped the RBIs take homers and OPS, while Cishek had two saves and Felix, Kershaw and Hughes won ERA and WHIP for the umpteenth week in a row.

Jesmond Dennings 29 7 30 3 .267 .755 3 3 25 3 2.00 1.00 6

Another matchup, another 6-5. This time it was Jesmond getting the better of Batteries Essential. Perkins and O’Day took care of saves and holds respectively, while Fister’s stingy week was a big factor in claiming ERA and WHIP. Dickerson had a big week, homering three times, scoring six runs and knocking in 11. Billy Hamilton, Stanton and Starlin Castro helped Batteries Essential claim steals, average and OPS, while Koeher led the staff with two wins and 12 strikeouts.

Team R HR RBI SB AVG OPS W SV K HLD ERA WHIP Score

Angels of Ash Vale 23 8 18 2 .254 .735 2 4 40 0 2.67 1.08 5

As you can see, 6-5 was a very popular score this week, showing just how competitive this league is. Iron Men’s pitchers took five categories thanks to Smyly, Wheeler, Gausman and Strasburg and the relief duo of Fien and Rodney. Adam Jones led the team with five RBIs. Chris Carter (four homers, nine RBIs) had a monster week for the Angels, while Morales also hit well. Rondon took care of saves in a very good week for the pitching staff, who were perhaps unlucky not to have claimed more categories, particularly with a very good team ERA and WHIP.

MLB this Week: Price returns to the Trop

CovMLBUK2014There are plenty of opportunities to watch some live baseball this working week, with four of five days offering at least one MLB game staring before midnight UK time.

The week begins with a game from Citi Field as Bartolo Colon takes to the mound – and, just as importantly from a viewer’s perspective, to the batter’s box – against the Chicago Cubs.

After a fallow evening on Tuesday, there are four early games on Wednesday in which Oakland and Seattle are in action against NL East teams, whilst Toronto and Milwaukee meet in an important series between two teams looking to make the playoffs.

The headline story on Thursday will come from Tropicana Field when David Price visits with his new team, the Detroit Tigers, just a few weeks after being traded away by the Rays.

The working week then ends, or perhaps we should say the weekend begins, with a day-game from Wrigley Field as the Cubs host the Orioles in an Interleague match-up.

JJ’s team fell a steal shy of an offensive sweep thanks to great weeks from Reyes, Butler (who’s found his power stroke), Beltre, Kemp and Aoki. Norwich hit pretty well and will consider themselves unfortunate not to claim a single category, especially after Polanco’s eight RBI week. The Riverkings hardly had a vintage week of pitching but it was good enough to defeat a decimated Sox team. Ventura picked up the lone win, while Gio Gonzalez had 14 strikeouts. Offensively, Javier Baez arrived with a bang, belting two homers. The Sox saw Alex Gordon hit three homers and score six times, while Altuve had three steals. With just three pitchers taking the mound, the Sox were able to make it over the 20 inning minimum limit. We’ve done well so far to avoid any pitching forfeits, but i fear we may see one next week if the Sox don’t use the DL and add reinforcements.

Weekly Hit Ground Ball: Hate for Harper

WHGB11When you watch an MLB game on BT Sport or ESPN, the chances are high that at some point – probably more than once, in fact – you will see an advert containing the Washington Nationals’ Bryce Harper.

Harper is shown on the field with some of the greats of the game stood next to the likes of Babe Ruth and Ted Williams, all leading to the final statement:

“Bryce Harper is only 21 years old, but he already looks like a legend”.

It’s a neat feat of production skill to make his image seamlessly blend in with footage of the past and as a 30 second promotional piece for MLB and one of it’s young players, it works really well.

However, it doesn’t half rile up some people, especially Stateside.

There’s a growing group who look at Bryce Harper’s career so far, not least his performance in 2014, and start tapping furiously at the keyboard or on their mobile device to explain that Harper is not a legend and is instead an overhyped kid who hasn’t done anything to deserve being associated with such a label.

And it’s not just the online loonies and big-mouth media ‘personalities’ that are piling in. On Wednesday, Harper’s manager Matt Williams lost patience with the latest reporter to question if the outfielder might be better off heading back to the Minor Leagues to work on his game. Williams responded in no uncertain terms that this was not going to happen and that he was fed up of such nonsense being stirred up, stating his case so strongly that he felt the need to apologise the next day for his behaviour.

Harper has had to live with lofty expectations ever since he appeared on the front of Sports Illustrated in June 2009. At the time he was 17 years old, still at Las Vegas High School and a year away from even being eligible to be drafted by a Major League team. In baseball, where the college scene doesn’t garner anywhere near as much attention as the gridiron and basketball competitions, a player doesn’t receive such national recognition until they are making waves as a rookie in the Majors and this often comes when the player is around 23 years old and has ‘paid his dues’ in the Minor Leagues.

Harper essentially had a target on his back before he had ever got near a Major League field. He has been firmly under the spotlight since that point and every transgression, and he had a few where his competitive spirit – being kind to him – got the better of him, and every dip in performance was always going to be picked over.

In many ways Harper has always reminded me of Wayne Rooney, who gained national attention in the U.K. when he made his debut for Everton as a sixteen year old. They both come across as being a bit rough around the edges, not your usual permanently smiling completely media-savy young guys. They are precociously talented and the fire within then has a tendency to push them over the edge at times.

Harper has faced criticism for his 110% style that sees him banging heavily into outfield walls trying to make stunning catches (and then facing even more criticism the very few times he gave anything less than 100% running down the line), whilst Rooney has been accused of letting his team and country down by letting his temper get the better of him, most notably after being sent off for stamping on Portugal’s Riccardo Carvalho in a 2006 World Cup quarter final (and then criticised heavily when he wasn’t charging around and ‘showing passion’).

The comments in parentheses drive home the point: because of who they are, anything less than complete success will be jumped on.

Both of them have already benefited handsomely from all the attention with lucrative contracts and promotional deals, so there’s no need to take violin lessons so as to serenade their poor downtrodden souls. The criticism is also a back-handed compliment to them: we expect and hope for great things from them and we’re disappointed when they don’t do something special.

In Harper’s case, it’s valid to look at his numbers to date on their own and to say they are not of a legendary level yet. Across his first 312 MLB games he has produced a .268/.350/.462 batting line with 46 homers.

They are not outstanding numbers, but they are good numbers and the whole point about Harper is that he’s such a talent that he has played those first 312 games at an age when the vast majority of players who make it to the Majors were competing against High School, College and low minor league competition.

I suspect the majority of baseball fans do understand this and the analysts fighting back against the Harper haters shouldn’t lose sight of baseball being a compelling drama of heroes and villains.

A lot of the grief Harper receives is because sports fans enjoy having a pop at a talented young player who doesn’t wear their chosen team’s uniform. It’s the way it works: those looking at the game from a rational perspective criticise players that aren’t very good, those looking at the game from a fan’s perspective criticise opposing players precisely because they are very good.

It all makes sense in a moment such as happened on Thursday, a day after Williams’ defence of his outfielder, when Harper launched a two-run walk-off homer against the New York Mets. It was a dramatic, exciting moment, made all the more so because Harper is a lightning rod for attention, both good and bad.

And that’s exactly why MLB has him starring in a promotional video.

Scorecards in Action: Jon Lester’s debut for the A’s

keeping_score_200x225It’s been a while since I’ve written a ‘scorecards in action’ post.

Jon Lester’s debut for the Oakland A’s on Saturday against the Kansas City Royals seemed like a good excuse to get a scorecard and some colour pens out and to score along with a game.

I used a standard ‘fan’ scoring system (as opposed to the IBAF version, for example), but added in a bit of colour. I used a red pen for outs, blue for hits, walks and normal base advancement, and green for errors.

[box]Click here to open a scanned pdf copy of my scorecard.[/box]

Looking back at the Kansas City side you can see quickly that it wasn’t a completely vintage Jon Lester display, with only one clean three-up, three-down inning in the sixth. However, the Royals’ hits were scattered and were generally only going for a single base. Even the double by Alex Gordon to lead off the fourth inning wasn’t all it may seem, as hinted at by the asterisk I put next to the ‘2B’ designation.

Gordon’s double was ‘sun assisted’, as third baseman Josh Donaldson lost a high pop-up in the Oakland sky and he could only cower for cover as the ball dropped harmlessly to the turf. After the next batter, Erik Kratz, grounded out to the second baseman Nick Punto, Gordon moved across to third base thanks to a Lorenzo Cain single that was originally ruled an error on Donaldson, as you can just about see from my hastily scribbled out annotation.

It was a sharp play for Donaldson to collect as the groundball fizzed up at him off the infield dirt, but he was behind the ball and for someone of his ability, it was probably a play he would have expected to make. I am stubborn and will hold firm on my own scoring call if I strongly disagree with the official scorer’s decision (adding an annotation to my scorecard just to make clear I’ve diverged from the official stance), yet in this case it was marginal enough for me to go with the flow.

Error or not, it almost proved costly for the A’s as Mike Moustakas lofted a flyball into centrefield for what looked like being a regulation sacrifice fly. Sam Fuld – recently reacquired from the Minnesota Twins – had other ideas and let fly with an acrobatic circus throw that gunned the tagging-up Gordon out at home plate to end the inning.

As an A’s fan, I was busy celebrating the great play so I didn’t jot down the out straight away and that was fortunate because as the A’s headed to their dugout, the Royals’ manager Ned Yost asked for the play to be reviewed. The new instant replay system is something that score-keeping fans now need to take into consideration, especially if using a pen rather than an easily-rubbed-out pencil mark. If a play looks debatable, now it’s always worth holding fire and making sure if there is going to be a challenge or not before committing anything to paper.

In this case, replays showed catcher Derek Norris had tagged Gordon out in time and the play could be scored as it was called initially called by the umpire. I added in a dotted red line just to more clearly link the Moustakas and Gordon outs.

Switching across to the A’s lineup side, the coloured pens come into their own by painting a very clear picture on a strange afternoon for the Royals.

Jason Vargas, returning from a stint on the Disabled List, overshadowed Lester early on by pitching four perfect innings to start the game. Then the wheels came off in quite spectacular fashion in an extended bottom of the fifth that had me scribbling out the pre-printed inning numbers for the sixth inning onwards.

The A’s batted around as they put up eight runs on eight hits. After Norris broke up the no-hitter with a lead-off double, the A’s didn’t necessarily hit Vargas hard but, in the words of the excitable A’s TV commentator Shooty Babitt, they just “kept the train moving” by racking up seven singles.

The last single came courtesy of Jonny Gomes – another player reacquired by the A’s on the trade deadline – and it was his second of the inning, but thanks to a Gordon error he ended up standing at third base.

This is another example of where the coloured pens help to capture a bit more detail quickly and neatly. The first leg of the diamond is entered in blue with a ‘1B’ alongside, then the line is continued in green – to show advancement on an error – before coming to a stop at third base.

Gomes collected two RBI as it was judged that Fuld and Lowrie would have come home on a single, whilst Donaldson’s final leg to home plate on the play was rightly put down to Gordon’s mishap in allowing the ball to skip under his glove in left field and to head to the wall. I probably should have noted Donaldson’s third-to-home line in green rather than blue, but I’ll put that slight slip down to excitement.

After Aaron Crow relieved Vargas and ended a long inning, Scott Downs and Bruce Chen came out of the Royals’ bullpen and kept the A’s quiet for the rest of the way, aside from a single in the eighth by Norris. The contrast in the long run of blue for the fifth inning and then the short bursts of red either side show how that one inning completely turned around the entire game.

In truth the A’s hitters were not their normal patient selves from the sixth inning onwards as they handed the game over to their pitching staff to complete the victory. The eight-spot put up in the fifth inning had given Lester a seven-run cushion and, although he may have been disappointed to concede two runs in the seventh, it paved the way for a winning debut in the green and gold for the ace for hire.

Finally, Norwich and Jesmond couldn’t be separated, finishing 6-6. Cobb, Porcello and Santana helped Norwich’s pitchers take five categories in a matchup which featured excellent pitching from both sides. Chapman and Britton had three saves each and Polanco stole two bases. Josh Harrison had a monster week for Jesmond, belting four homers and scoring 10 runs. Trout and Andrus helped take average and OPS and Broxton had three holds.

Trade deadline

While there was plenty of trade activity between MLB clubs, we’ll see how it impacts on our league. Lester, Lackey and Price should benefit from playing on stronger teams, while maybe a move to Fenway will help Allen Craig. Drew Smyly and Austin Jackson may see their numbers affected by moving to weaker teams and, in Jackson’s case, a pitcher-friendly ballpark.
