Renewing MLB.TV subscribers to pay 2009 prices

by Matt Smith

CovHlSqMLB.com has been sending out e-mails regarding 2010 MLB.TV subscriptions this week, passing on the excellent news that 2009 subscribers renewing for 2010 will be charged at last year’s lower prices.

This means that renewing subscribers to the standard MLB.TV service get a $20 discount on the advertised price: $79.95 (£52.22) instead of $99.95 (£65.28).  That makes for a £13 saving for British customers.  It looks like renewing MLB.TV Premium subscribers will get a $10 discount so that the current $119.95 (£78.67) price goes back down to $109.95 (£72.11). I’m not a renewing subscriber to that service so I cannot categorically confirm this, but the reduced price is quoted in the e-mail where it explains how a standard MLB.TV subscription can be upgraded to a Premium one.

This news comes prior to Spring Training games beginning next week.  Coverage on MLB.TV is dependent on TV networks broadcasting the games, so a lot of them are only available via the local radio feeds on Gameday Audio, which is included in the MLB.TV subscription.  MLB.com states that they will be showing over 150 Spring Training games on MLB.TV, starting at 18.05 GMT on Tuesday 2 with a game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the New York Yankees.

2010 subscription details for Gameday Audio and Gameday Premium are still not available.

Can anyone help

On mlb.com when I go to play one of the videos on the homepage via a hdmi cable from laptop to tv does not work. Before I sign up to one of these services I wanted to make sure I can play the game thru the laptop via hdmi onto the tv.
Can anyone advise?
Thanks

Hi Owen, I haven’t tried it myself yet, but it seems to work, take a look (shameless plug alert) in the comments on this post on my blog.

I haven’t received an email about the discount yet. I’m wondering that as I’d unticked the automatic re-subscription thing last year, thay may have left me out. Or maybe they just haven’t got around to me yet!

Hi Steve, yep I expect it’s just been sent out to people who ticked the box. Shame they didn’t make that clear at the time.

I don’t know if HDMI works, but I’ve gotten it to work fine on an S-video cable.

If you use a HDMI cable, you may find initially that the sound comes through the laptop and not the TV. You may also have the picture on the TV but not the laptop, or vice versa.

The solution is to play about with your video/sound settings on the laptop and get the right combination. You will need to change the settings back when you wish to use your laptop as normal.

Depending on which OS system you use, you may be prompted to select these settings when you plug in the HDMI cable for the first time.

It’s a bit fiddly but can be done, I’m sure their will be plenty of FAQ guides on the net if you search on Google.

I had it last year but didn’t select the auto renew so am having to pay full price again this year. Did the email contain a link that I could use, or is it unique to that user?

I watched most games via a hdmi from laptop to tv. Worked fine.
The audio stayed on the laptop if I opened the stream then plugged the hdmi in, but if i opened the stream after plugging into tv all was well.

The only speed issues I had were during the sunday afternoon games, probably because this slot has high traffic due to number of games scheduled.
