Box Office Bryce

Bryce Harper came to the attention of most baseball fans when he was labelled “Baseball’s Chosen One” on the front cover of Sports Illustrated as a 16 year old.

Human nature being what it is, from that very moment there were people all too keen to see this precocious young buck fall flat on his face.

In some ways they got their wish on Monday night when Harper went face-first into the outfield fence at Dodger Stadium in a classic ‘that’s got to hurt’ moment that is sure to be replayed countless times over the years.

However, far from knocking him down, the incident illustrates that the bold predictions of greatness from a young age were not mere hype.

There are talented athletes and then there are a select few who somehow capture the public’s imagination more than the rest. People are drawn to them, everything they do becomes a story and their triumphs and failures seem that much more extreme.

In part it is a direct reflection on their ability. In Harper’s case, he is clearly a gifted sportsman capable of producing athletic moments that even his teammates marvel at. The Washington Post recently published an outstanding feature on the young slugger’s hitting prowess – setting the benchmark for other media outlets on utilizing graphics, video and text in a compelling piece of online analysis.

But it goes beyond his skills and production at the plate.

Quite simply, he’s the sort of player you want to watch because you know that at any moment he can do something that will make you say ‘wow’; whether that’s hitting a monstrous home run or using his face to the test the structural soundness of a wall.

The attention he receives will mean some will soon be sick of the sight of him, if they’re not already. The most outstanding players tend to provoke extreme reactions; either you love them or hate them, there’s no in between.

But what everyone should agree with is that baseball is a more exciting place to have young stars like Harper coming through and making a name for themselves.

Weekly Hit Ground Ball: Draft works like a dream for Washington

WhgbHlSqMonday and Tuesday last week showed the MLB amateur player draft in all its glory.  The system is not perfect, and maybe a perfect system that meets everyone’s needs is not possible, but you’ll hear no complaints from Washington.

A franchise that has bordered on the hopeless for most of its brief existence now has more hope than most.

On Monday, the Nationals selected 17 year old Bryce Harper, as expected, as the number one overall pick in the 2010 draft.  They still have to agree a contract with his agent Scott Boras, but Washington are unlikely to let him slip from their grasp.  Harper, a Wayne Rooney-esque man-child, is the type of talent that scouts dream of discovering.  His superhuman home-run-hitting feats have already attained mythical status and only injuries seem capable of halting his ascendency to star status once he hits the Majors in three years or so.

Any killjoy wanting to dampen the excitement surrounding Harper (‘wait ‘till he has played in the Majors for a few years’ etc) was soon firmly put in their party-pooping place by the Major League debut of the Nationals’ number one pick from the 2009 draft.  Stephen Strasburg unquestionably lived up to the hype on Tuesday night against the Pirates, which is scary when you consider just how much hype there was.

This is what the draft is designed to do, to take a team that is in the doldrums and give their fans a reason to be excited once again.  Continue reading

Web pick of the week: Sports Illustrated and Bryce Harper

Web-PickThe Washington Nationals selected 17 year old Bryce Harper as the number one pick in this year’s amateur draft on Monday.

Harper’s freakish ability has been discussed with childlike glee by scouts and prospect experts for months and, quite frankly, you could almost complain that Harper took the fun out of the draft.  Just like last year, there was no doubt whatsoever as to which player the Nationals were going to pick.

Judging by the instant impact that their 2009 selection had on his debut on Tuesday night, I doubt Washington are too concerned about that.

It’s easy to dismiss the comments about Harper as mere hype, but  Stephen Strasburg proved in one start that even hype of the greatest magnitude can turn out to be fully deserved.  The hype truly began in June last year, when Sports Illustrated put Harper on their front cover crowning him as ‘Baseball’s Chosen One’ and comparing him to basketball star LeBron James.  Tom Verducci’s article made even casual baseball fans aware of who Harper is and it’s well worth a read.
