Great Britain wins European Championship opener

GbHlSqGreat Britain started off their European Championship campaign in style today with a 10-1 win over Croatia in the TVC Stadium, Stuttgart.

Spain’s recent success in the FIFA World Cup showed that a team can recover from a disappointing opening game, but every team hopes to get that first win under their belt as soon as possible and to set a positive tone for the rest of the tournament.

That’s exactly what Team GB did today, not only by winning their first game but by putting up six runs in the top of the first inning.

Admittedly they were helped by a nervous start from their opponents, with Croatia committing two errors in the field, catcher Benjamin Goldstrom allowing a passed ball and starting pitcher Michael Lennox throwing two wild pitches all in the first frame.  However, Great Britain will rightfully argue that it was their patience at the plate and positive approach that put the pressure on their opponents and allowed them to capitalize on the subsequent mistakes.

There can be no better start to a pitcher’s day than seeing his teammates racking up a six-run cushion before he even takes the mound.  Alex Smith had that good fortune today and he wasn’t going to let that run support go to waste.  Smith pitched seven strong innings, allowing only three hits and one run while striking out four and giving up one walk.  Stephen Spragg and Jeff Mottl picked up from where Smith left off, each pitching a scoreless inning and facing the minimum three batters, in Spragg’s case with a double-play taking care of a walked batter in the eighth.

Michael Johnson, a Great Britain Cadet graduate and former Burgess Hill and Bracknell baseball club member, drove in four runs, while Evan Romanchuk went 3-for-5 with a solo home run to lead off the sixth inning.  Former Manchester Baseball Club player Rich Klijn also went 3-for-5 and the Bracknell Blazers’ Michael Trask hit a single to centre field in the eighth inning to get that all-important first tournament hit out of the way.

It all amounted to a great start by Pat Doyle’s men, but there’s still a lot of hard work to be done if Great Britain are to qualify for the second round.  That work continues tomorrow with a game against Sweden, who lost 12-9 against Greece in Heidenheim today.

Web pick of the week: European Championship 2010

Web-PickThe European Championship is now officially underway, making it completely appropriate that we focus on some websites featuring the international event.

There are various sites at which you can keep up with all the latest news.

I normally find that the tournament section on the Confederation of European Baseball website is the easiest to navigate. Here you will find results, stats, live play-by-play and, by the looks of it, some live footage from each stadium (probably just a fixed ‘web cam’ type arrangement, but a nice touch if so nonetheless).

The official tournament website can be found here, with an English version also available thanks to Mister-Baseball.com.

Finally, British baseball fans need to bookmark the Great Britain Baseball website to get all of the latest news and reports from within the Team GB camp.  There is also a Facebook group for the Great Britain Baseball National Teams and a Twitter feed.

British Baseball Beat: Great Britain begin their 2010 European Championship campaign

bbbHlsqWe have a mix of domestic and international news this week, as the usual British Baseball Federation action is joined by the start of a major international baseball tournament.

The Senior Great Britain National Team has enjoyed unprecedented success over the last three years: a silver medal finish in the 2007 European Championships and a Second Round appearance in the 2009 World Cup.  With those achievements behind them, Team GB head out on the tournament trail yet again this week for the 2010 European Championships in Germany, with the team’s first game scheduled for Friday.

Great Britain face a significant challenge in repeating their 2007 success but guided by a new Manager, Pat Doyle, and General Manager, Jason Greenberg, you can be certain that the half-hearted, lamentable performance of England’s football team this summer will not be repeated in the ballparks of Stuttgart, Heidenheim and Neuenberg.  The roster for this tournament contains a number of current or former BBF league players alongside British-eligible players intent on representing the country with pride.   Continue reading

Mister-Baseball interviews Jason Greenberg

EC2010SmThe European Championship is almost upon, with the opening games taking place on 23 July.

In the lead-up to the event, the excellent Mister-Baseball.com website has been running a series of interviews with the General Managers of the teams involved.

The latest is with Team GB’s Jason Greenberg.  Jason discusses his hopes for the tournament, how the level of play in European baseball has changed since the last tournament in 2007 and Great Britain’s pre-tournament plans.

Mister-Baseball is also supplying English content to the official European Championship website.  The English version of the site can be found here.  If you click through to the German version you’ll see that one of the top stories is about the Great Britain roster, noting that three players on the roster (Ted Gieschen, Richard Klijn and Sam Whitehead) currently play in the German leagues and three others (Chris Falls, Will Lintern and Mitch Evans) have done so in the past.

British Baseball Beat: London Tournament, BBF Leagues and Team GB’s EC roster

bbbHlsqThere were only three British Baseball Federation league contests on Sunday as teams were either taking a break or participating in other events, such as the London International Tournament that took place on Saturday and Sunday in Croydon.

A full report on the London International Tournament is available on the BBF website.  The reigning National Baseball League champions Bracknell Blazers won the main event, defeating the Essex Arrows 21-2 in the final, while PC Wolves from France took the Frank Brady trophy on run difference.  The annual Home Run Derby on Saturday was won by the Mildenhall Bulldogs’ Mike McClure.  Rumours of a Home Run hit-off between McClure and ‘Big Papi’ David Ortiz are unconfirmed.

And completely made up.

Two of the teams, Latino Stars and Vatos, didn’t show up and unfortunately it looks like that caused a few organizational problems.  Ideas are already being floated to add a similar Midlands-based event to the baseball calendar next year.  Continue reading

British Baseball Beat: Reduced schedule creates opportunities for others

bbbHlsqAfter a host of exciting developments in recent weeks, the British Baseball league games from last weekend were something of an anticlimax.  Not because of the games that took place, but the games that didn’t.

There were a number of empty ballfields in Britain on Sunday, either through games being postponed or games being forfeited.

Still, that gave the teams that were playing a chance to gain an advantage over their competitors.  Add in an impressive schedule for the coming weekend, including the NBL Independence Day event on Saturday, and there’s plenty to take a look at.

NBL: Mets and Blazers stay ahead

The London Mets (17-2) and Bracknell Blazers (15-2) continue to blaze a trail at the top of the National Baseball League as both took double-header sweeps on Sunday.

The Blazers’ two victories came in unusual circumstances as the Richmond Flames (11-6) had to forfeit both games due to Rob Unsell suffering an injury in the first inning of the first scheduled game and the team having no substitutes to call on.  The Mets got their wins at the expense of Southampton Mustangs (9-10), although the close score in the second game (8-6) was another sign that the Mustangs have settled into life in the top-tier. Essex Arrows (3-14) and Croydon Pirates (5-12) split a double-header in the other two NBL games of the day.  Full details and reaction can be found in Simon Fitzjohn’s weekly report.

The results mean that the London Mets maintain top spot, with the Blazers one game behind and having stretched their lead over the third-placed Flames to four games.

NBL Independence Day event this Saturday

The eight NBL teams will gather at the Croydon Pirates’ Roundshaw Field this Saturday for the second ‘Special Event’ of the 2010 season: the NBL Independence Day event.  The new concept is designed to showcase the top-tier of British baseball by bringing all the teams together and putting on a show that can bring in a crowd and generate some positive publicity for the sport.  The first event, The Summer Classic at Herts’ Grovehill Ballpark, was deemed to be a success and all involved will be looking to build on that positive start.  The schedule, split over two diamonds, is as follows:

12:00    Pirates v Blazers
12:00    Falcons v Arrows
15:00    Flames v Mets
15:00    Bulldogs v Mustangs

AAA: Kings keep on winning, A’s and Patriots split a double-header

The battle between the AAA-North ‘Big Four’ didn’t quite materialize as the double-header between Liverpool Trojans (13-5) and Harrogate Tigers (10-4) was postponed.  Manchester A’s (12-6) would have vaulted over the Trojans into the top spot had they won both games of their double-header against Menwith Hill Patriots (11-7), but the Pats recovered from losing the opening game 9-1 and edged the second contest 2-1.  The split keeps the A’s one game behind the Trojans, with the Tigers also being one back of the lead but with four games in hand on their rivals.  The Tigers and A’s are due to meet for a double-header at the latter’s Allen Field this Sunday.

In the South, Bristol Badgers’ (4-4) playoff hopes took a dent as they lost twice to the league-leading Oxford Kings (11-1).  The Badgers still have games in hand on their rivals, but they next face a tricky double-header against Bracknell Inferno (10-4) this Sunday that could push them further behind and make the rest of their games ‘must win’ affairs. Alternatively, the Badgers could win twice and really set up the remainder of their season.  That’s what makes this AAA-South race one to watch.

Inferno are a good team but they are not unbeatable, as the Essex Redbacks showed on Sunday by winning the second game of their double-header to earn a split.  It was only a few weeks ago that the Redbacks, making their BBF debut this season don’t forget, were 0-6.  Now they are 5-7 and showing definite signs of a team improving and growing in confidence as the season progresses.

AA: Bolton boost title hopes, Knights make it ten wins on the spin

In the North, Bolton Robots of Doom (11-3) cemented their place at the top of the table by taking two wins from Sheffield Bladerunners (7-5), the second of which coming via a forfeit by their opponents.  The Bladerunners are scheduled to host Oldham North Stars (0-13) this Sunday, while the Robots are away to Humber Pilots (5-4).

In the South, Essex Archers’ (8-3) plan to showcase baseball as part of the Waltham Abbey Town Show on Saturday didn’t come to fruition as Thames Valley Bisons (4-9) forfeited the two scheduled games, although baseball was featured as part of the Show on Sunday thanks to the Essex Arrows and Croydon Pirates.  In the other two games, Richmond Knights (10-1) made it ten wins in a row as they defeated Windsor Bears (7-5) twice.  This Sunday’s games include a double-header between Croydon Pirates III and Essex Archers and the Pool A-leading Poole Piranhas hosting the Bisons.

In the Midlands, MK Bucks (5-5) and Birmingham Maple Leafs (9-4) earned one win apiece in their double-header, setting the stage for Leicester Blue Sox (8-4) to close within half a game of Birmingham at the top of the table.  The Blue Sox got there, but not quite in the way they would have liked.  Mildenhall Bulldogs 2 (1-8) had to forfeit their two games against Leicester, handing the Blue Sox two 7-0 victories.  They will be hoping their club mates, Leicester Blue Sox 2 (2-8), can do them a huge favour by taking a game or two from the MK Bucks this Sunday.

A: Dragons defeat the Rays in the battle of Pool leaders

The battle between the Pool A and Pool B leaders went the way of Richmond Dragons (8-2) by a score of 6-3.  They now have a one-game leader over Guildford Mavericks in Pool A, while Braintree Rays’ (5-3)lead in Pool B is down to half a game over Old Timers.  The Rays’ local rivals Chelmsford Clippers (5-5)may have seen their hopes of sneaking into the playoffs put to rest on Sunday as they had to forfeit their game against Bracknell Pyros (2-6).  This Sunday, the Old Timers host the Dragons, while the Herts Raptors seek their first win of the season with a game against the Rays.

Great Britain National Rosters announced

On the international scene, Team GB announced their Seniors, Juniors and Cadets rosters for their respective tournaments this summer.

The Seniors are heading to Germany for the European Baseball Championships, aiming to build on their excellent silver-medal showing in the 2007 event and the lessons learned from last year’s World Cup campaign.  New Head Coach Pat Doyle and General Manager Jason Greenberg have put together a 40-man preliminary roster that will be reduced to 24 before the tournament begins on 22 July.

The Junior National Team are competing at the CEB European Junior Qualifier in Attnang-Puchheim, Austria, at the beginning of August, while the Cadet National Team will travel to Nykoping, Sweden for the CEB European Cadet Qualifier held between 19 and 24 July.

Full details of all three rosters can be found on the BBF website.  And don’t forget that the fundraising effort is in full swing.

Pat Doyle appointed as Head Coach of the Great Britain Senior National Team

GbHlSqGreat Britain’s preparations for this summer’s European Championships have been boosted by the appointment of Pat Doyle as the new Head Coach of the Senior National Team.

Doyle is a highly respected coach who brings a considerable amount of experience to the role.  He has coached in the U.S. college system for over 23 years, been part of the Team USA coaching staff and has served as the Global Coordinator of the Major League Baseball Envoy Programme for the last twelve years.

Doyle takes over from Stephan Rapaglia, who led Team GB to the unprecedented achievements of a silver medal in the 2007 European Championships and a second-round showing in the 2009 IBAF Baseball World Cup.  Rapaglia is a tough act to follow, but he has every confidence that Doyle is the man to take the team forward.

“We are very fortunate to welcome Pat to the GB programme”, said Rapaglia. “Pat is an extremely well-respected coach with a wealth of high-level experience and, frankly, we couldn’t have hoped for a better fit”.

Doyle will now put together his assistant coaching staff for the European Championships, which takes place in Germany between 23 July and 1 August.  Continue reading

British Baseball Beat: Springing into action

bbbHlsqWelcome to the first edition of what hopefully will become a weekly column, published every Thursday morning, focusing on the British baseball scene.

Once the season begins, we’ll be looking back at the results from the previous weekend and looking forward to the games set to take place over the weekend ahead.  In doing so, I also hope to include plenty of stories from people involved in the sport, from players talking about recent games to off-the-field news and developments. If you have any stories that you’d like to share, please pass them on to me via the Contacts page.

This seemed as good a time as any to launch the new column as the major pre-season event on the British calendar is scheduled to get underway this coming Saturday.  Continue reading

Further thoughts on the Great Britain national team programme

GbHlSqThe potential future direction of the Great Britain national team programme is continuing to be discussed as the British Baseball Federation (BBF) Annual General Meeting approaches this Sunday.

As clarified in my recent article, the proposed funding contribution from BBF membership monies to the overall national team budget is less than £5,000.  That’s a small amount in terms of international baseball funding, but it’s a tidy sum in the real world and the people who pay their fees toward it have a right to see that the money is being spent for the benefit of British baseball as a whole.

If the programme should continue in a similar vein to the one at present, what are benefits of the existing set-up and does it have a wider impact above and beyond the impressive recent tournament performances of the senior team?

In particular, what is its impact on the most important part of the development of British baseball: the junior players?  Has there been a noticeable improvement in the coaching on offer? Can having a national team programme of a higher standard act as a competitive catalyst to youngsters, setting the bar that bit higher, driving them on and helping them to ‘be the best they can be’  so that they make a strong GB team on merit; a GB team that we can all be proud of?

To answer some of these questions, I thought it would be interesting to hear the thoughts of some people who have been involved in the Team GB programme, or have seen it from close quarters, from both a senior level and a junior level.

Further details on the Great Britain national team

GbHlSqThe importance of the Great Britain national team within British baseball, including the potential benefits of a possible World Baseball Classic spot in 2013, is being argued as the British Baseball Federation (BBF) continues to consider its budget for the coming years.

It is now known that the recent proposals of, and resignations by, Great Britain’s General Manager Alan Smith and Head Coach Stephan Rapaglia were prompted by the BBF Board’s preliminary decision not to meet the funding commitments required to field a competitive national team for the foreseeable future.  Smith and Rapaglia were informed that the proposed 2010 national team budget would not be met and that the final year of Rapaglia’s four-year contract would not be honoured, although both were also informed that the Board wished for them to continue working with Team GB.

Smith and Rapaglia responded by submitting an alternative outline of how the BBF could continue to support the national team.  In this, the only contribution to the national effort from BBF membership money would involve redirecting part of the £5,000 that would be saved by Rapaglia’s removal from a salaried position to the European Championship and the junior team budgets, the latter seen as being a vitally important part of investing in the sport’s future.

When no formal response was received from the BBF Board, the detailed proposal, referred to as a Statement of Intent, was submitted to the Board to be accepted or rejected, alongside the resignations of Smith and Rapaglia from their posts as of 28 February: the date of the BBF Annual General Meeting.  Continue reading
