Keeping score: Pirates-Cubs 14 August 2009

The Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago Cubs played an afternoon game at Wrigley Field last Friday and I had marked it down as a good way to spend a lazy Friday evening after a long week.  It was also an opportunity to keep score of a game, a favourite hobby of mine that I had somehow managed to miss out on for a month or so.

My evening of baseball didn’t quite work out as planned.  I got home slightly late for the start of the game and ended up leaving it after three and a half innings.  However, I still had plenty to write down even in that short amount of time.  Continue reading

Keeping Score with the Herts Little League

HertsBBIf you turn up at a Herts Little League day and spy some parents glancing at an electronic device, don’t be too hasty in criticising them for not paying attention.  They are probably not checking their e-mails or writing a shopping list.  They are much more likely to be playing an important role in documenting the game.

Official scorers at Little League games are an unfamiliar sight in Britain, but they are the latest example of the forward thinking that has become a hallmark of Herts Baseball Club.  Continue reading

Bradley playing badly: Twins-Cubs 12 June 2009

British-based Cubs fans have lots to look forward to over the next few days.  Starting tonight, their team is playing five straight early games, all perfectly timed to be enjoyed live during the British evening.  There are plenty of other day games taking place over that period as well (Angels-Giants at 20.45 BST tonight, for example), but there’s always something extra special about games played at Wrigley under glorious sunshine.

That setting added to the joy felt as I sat down with a few beverages last Friday evening to watch the Twins take on the Cubs.  The antics of Milton Bradley made sure it was a game that will raise a smile whenever I look back over my completed scorecard in the future.  Continue reading

Replays, earned runs and shortstops at second base: Rangers-Astros 23 May 2009

Last weekend saw the first instalment of Interleague play during the 2009 MLB season.  There are plenty of reasons to dislike the now traditional sight of AL and NL teams coming together outside of the World Series, but it does at least give fans in two-team cities and states the chance to gain bragging rights for a few weeks.

The Lone Star Series is one such example.  The Houston Astros and Texas Rangers come together to try to gain Major League wins and to capture the ‘Silver Boot’ trophy.  Continue reading

When Aces Collide: Dodgers-Phillies 14 May 2009

Sometimes a pitching classic on paper ends up being a high-scoring affair.  The batters raise their game and the pitchers are made to look distinctly ordinary if they are not quite on top form.

Other times, two aces come together and show the batters why they have such a formidable reputation.  Chad Billingsley and Cole Hamels did just that last Thursday in a day-game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Philadelphia Phillies.  Continue reading

Great game, shame about the singing: Marlins-Cubs 1 May 2009

My guide to this week’s early MLB games once again saluted the great service the Chicago Cubs (unknowingly) provide for British baseball fans.  There’s no better way to begin a weekend than sitting down on a Friday evening, possibly with friends and a beverage or two, and watching a live ballgame from Wrigley Field.  The Cubbies allow you to do just that more often than not, with MLB.TV and Gameday Audio lending a helping hand.

A Friday game from Wrigley Field never fails to produce an enjoyable encounter, as shown just two weeks ago when the Florida Marlins were visiting the north side of Chicago.  Continue reading
