The Herts Spring League got underway last Sunday.\u00c2\u00a0 There are two more rounds of the League still to be played, with day two being held this coming Sunday and day three being held seven days later.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n

Judging by day one, expect plenty of action.\u00c2\u00a0 As always seems to be the case in spring, the batters were ahead of the pitchers with 106 runs being plated over six games.\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n

The bats were really swinging in the Kent Mariners-MK Bucs contest, with the Bucs getting off to a 9-2 lead and then holding off the Mariners’ charge to win by a final score of 15-14.\u00c2\u00a0 Elsewhere, Herts played two games (one against the Richmond Flames, the other against the Braintree Rays), the Sidewinders took on British Baseball Federation newcomers the Alconbury Braves, the Richmond Dragons played Bracknell Blazers and the Southampton Mustangs faced the Essex Arrows.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n

Herts also hosted an umpiring clinic<\/a> by the Amateur Baseball Umpires Association of Great Britain (ABUA) as part of the weekend.\u00c2\u00a0 It’s always worth remembering that the games can’t be played without umpires, scorers and other support staff.\u00c2\u00a0 If playing is not your thing, there are still many ways to be actively involved in the game here in Britain.<\/p>\n

However, if you\u00c2\u00a0are thinking of taking up the sport,\u00c2\u00a0there’s an excellent opportunity for newcomers to learn some baseball skills at a hitting clinic<\/a> run by Herts\u00c2\u00a0this Saturday.\u00c2\u00a0 It’s limited to thirteen year olds and under for the first three hours (12.00-15.00), although it’s open to all for the final hour (15.00 to 16.00).<\/p>\n

There will be nine games in\u00c2\u00a0total played\u00c2\u00a0on the second day of the Herts Spring League this Sunday (5th); three each at Grovehill Ballpark in Herts, Ham Field in Richmond and Northbrooks Rec.
