The Detroit Tigers have just been hit by a hammer blow. It’s been announced that flame-throwing reliever Joel Zumaya had reconstructive surgery on his shoulder earlier this week to repair damage caused while moving items at his home in San Diego. Zumaya’s house was one of millions threatened by the recent fires in California. They expect him to miss most, if not all, of the first half of the 2008 season, creating a big hole in their bullpen. <\/p>\n
It’s a timely reminder to all us armchair GMs that, in the real world, the best-laid plans can quickly unravel. The Tigers’ GM Dave Dombrowski now has a new problem to solve. His previous plans relating to Todd Jones’s possible departure via free agency may have now been re-written. Dombrowski’s week started well, finalising a trade with the Braves to acquire Edgar Renteria, but things can change very quickly in baseball. Just when it looks like things are working out as you planned, something hits you out of nowhere and it’s back to the drawing board.<\/p>\n
Unfortunately this isn’t the first time Zumaya has suffered a strange non-baseball injury. He memorably (well, not for him) missed several games during the 2006 ALCS recovering from an inflamed wrist and forearm caused by excessive playing of Guitar Hero. These injuries may at least provide Zumaya with a good excuse in the future.
