{"id":466,"date":"2008-06-19T00:01:28","date_gmt":"2008-06-18T23:01:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/baseballgb.co.uk\/?p=466"},"modified":"2009-09-26T15:16:08","modified_gmt":"2009-09-26T14:16:08","slug":"bash-brothers-bronx-bombers-and-baseball-in-europe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/baseballgb.co.uk\/?p=466","title":{"rendered":"Bash Brothers, Bronx Bombers, and Baseball in Europe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I noted recently that there are a lot of books on my &#8216;must get around to buying a copy&#8217; list.\u00c2\u00a0 The trouble is, new titles keep coming out each month that make the list even longer.\u00c2\u00a0 I thought it would be useful to put together a post every month or so to give a rundown on baseball books that will be published in the near future.\u00c2\u00a0 Here is my pick of the crop scheduled to arrive on Amazon (and other reputable book-selling sites, although not in your local bookshop) over the next six weeks or so. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Bash-Brothers-Subpoenaed-Fay-Vincent\/dp\/1597971782\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1213823378&amp;sr=1-1\" target=\"_blank\">Bash Brothers: A Legacy Subpoenaed by Dale Tafoya<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/strong>This one has in fact just been released.\u00c2\u00a0 As the title suggests, Tafoya tells the tales of Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire, from their rise to being two of the biggest stars in the game, to their ultimate falls from grace.\u00c2\u00a0 The key selling point\u00c2\u00a0of this\u00c2\u00a0book is that Tafoya has really done his research here, interviewing over 150 relevant sources of information (former team mates, coaches etc).\u00c2\u00a0 Some people have already read more than they care to about performance-enhancing drugs in MLB and this book will clearly not appeal to them.\u00c2\u00a0 However, this is undoubtedly one of the biggest topics (if not <em>the<\/em> biggest) of the recent era and Tafoya&#8217;s book promises to provide a real insight into the subject.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Living-Black-Pitchers-Season-Remember\/dp\/0316113913\/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1213823403&amp;sr=1-2\" target=\"_blank\">Living on the Black: Two Pitchers, Two Teams, One Season to Remember by John Feinstein<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/strong>Feinstein is perhaps better known for his writing on golf and basketball, but he turns his attention to baseball here with a detailed look at the 2007 season through the eyes of Tom Glavine and Mike Mussina.\u00c2\u00a0 For the two pitchers and their respective teams, 2007 was something of a rollercoaster season so Feinstein certainly picked a good year to document.\u00c2\u00a0 The book is out in hardcover on June 27th.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Last-Real-Season-Hilarious-Look\/dp\/0446401544\/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1213823430&amp;sr=1-2\" target=\"_blank\">The Last Real Season: A Hilarious Look Back at 1975 by Mike Shropshire<\/a>.<\/strong><br \/>\nShropshire&#8217;s &#8216;Seasons in Hell&#8217; is one of the books on my &#8216;must buy&#8217; list and this new title has been hailed as an excellent follow-up. Also set for release in hardcover on June 27th.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Last-Night-Yankee-Dynasty-New\/dp\/0061672874\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1213823458&amp;sr=1-1\" target=\"_blank\">The Last Night of the Yankee Dynasty New Edition by Buster Olney<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/strong>Not really a new book, but it&#8217;s a newly expanded version.\u00c2\u00a0 Olney will be known to British baseball fans for his current work on ESPN, but he previously covered the Yankees for the New York Times and consequently he was in a perfect position to record what he felt made the Yankee dynasty and how and why it came to an end in 2001.\u00c2\u00a0 If you&#8217;ve already got a copy then this version probably won&#8217;t be for you, but everyone else should add it to their list.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s released in paperback in July.\u00c2\u00a0 Amazon currently lists it at \u00c2\u00a36.86 and at that price you can&#8217;t go wrong.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Center-Field-Shot-Baseball-Television\/dp\/0803248253\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1213823487&amp;sr=1-1\" target=\"_blank\">Center Field Shot: A History of Baseball on Television by James R. Walker and Robert V. Bellamy<\/a>.<\/strong><br \/>\nSomething a little bit different.\u00c2\u00a0 There is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hardballtimes.com\/main\/article\/book-review-center-field-shot\/\" target=\"_blank\">very\u00c2\u00a0useful review <\/a>of this book on Hardball Times and, considering how much of our baseball is delivered via the tele, it might appeal to you.\u00c2\u00a0 This one is out on 15 July.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Baseball-Europe-Country-History\/dp\/0786437243\/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1213822365&amp;sr=1-2\" target=\"_blank\">Baseball in Europe: A Country by Country History by Josh Chetwynd<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/strong>Last but by no means least, this is Josh&#8217;s follow-up to his <a href=\"https:\/\/baseballgb.co.uk\/?p=324\">outstanding book<\/a> on British baseball.\u00c2\u00a0 In all honesty, it was only after I had been watching MLB for\u00c2\u00a0several years that I started becoming aware of how much baseball is played in\u00c2\u00a0this continent.\u00c2\u00a0 A quick look at Mister-Baseball.com shows that there is plenty of interest in the sport and I&#8217;m very keen to find out more about how baseball has developed in places such as Holland and Italy.\u00c2\u00a0 If this book is as good as &#8216;British Baseball and the West Ham Club&#8217;, it will be an essential purchase for all British baseball fans.
