Christopher Massey picked this up in his comment <\/a>on the ‘Switch-hitting cricketers’ post and now MLB.com are running a story <\/a>about it.\u00c2\u00a0 The Yankees’ minor league pitcher\u00c2\u00a0Pat Venditte can hurl the ball with either arm which is a neat trick in itself, but when a switch-hitter comes to bat everything just gets silly:<\/p>\n

‘I’m hitting left-handed’<\/em><\/p>\n

‘Well then I’m pitching left-handed’<\/em><\/p>\n

‘If you’re pitching left-handed then I’m going to hit right-handed’<\/em><\/p>\n

‘I’ll pitch from the right side then’<\/em><\/p>\n

‘Okay, I’ll hit from the left’<\/em>\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n

Repeat the above until the umpire gets fed up and both managers are called on\u00c2\u00a0to the field to sort it out.<\/p>\n

As with the Kevin Pieterson switch-hit storm, the incident has had the officials consulting the rule book to try and work out how to deal with the situation in the future.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Justin Klemm, the executive director of the Professional Baseball Umpire Corporation,\u00c2\u00a0is quoted\u00c2\u00a0in the MLB.com article stating that they are working\u00c2\u00a0“through different scenarios in order to establish rules that are fair and won’t make a travesty of the game”.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Sounds familiar to the approach the MCC took, doesn’t it?\u00c2\u00a0 As I’ve written countless times before (and will do again), baseball and cricket share a lot more common ground than some people think.<\/p>\n

I wonder if\u00c2\u00a0Scott Styris will try to bowl left-arm medium pace today if\u00c2\u00a0Kevin Pieterson tries his switch-hitting antics?\u00c2\u00a0 Somehow, I think not.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
