src=\"https:\/\/baseballgb.co.uk\/wp-content\/Web-Pick.png\" alt=\"Web-Pick\" width=\"128\" height=\"128\" \/>We\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve got something a little bit different for our Web Pick this week.\u00c2\u00a0 It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a great video that has been doing the rounds for the last couple of months, but even if you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve seen it already, I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m sure you won\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t mind it getting another mention.<\/p>\n<p>On 12 June 1970, Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Dock Ellis turned up at the Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego and pitched a no-hitter against the Padres.\u00c2\u00a0 That\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a worthy feat to celebrate in any case, but what makes this no-no stand out is that Ellis was not exactly on top of his game.\u00c2\u00a0 In fact, he was out of his tree, off his head, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153high as a Georgia Pine\u00e2\u20ac\u009d or any other phrase you might wish to use.\u00c2\u00a0 The episode has been immortalised in various songs in the past, but it has now become the subject of a brilliant animated video.\u00c2\u00a0 <!--more--><\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"500\" height=\"315\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/boxes\/SDN\/SDN197006121.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">records<\/a> show that Ellis walked eight batters and hit one other during the nine innings, while also allowing three stolen bases.\u00c2\u00a0 For whatever reason, the Padres were unable to take advantage of those base runners, not to mention Ellis\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 spaced-out state, and two solo home runs by Willie Stargell were enough to win the game for the Pirates by a score of 2-0.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This was Ellis\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s third season in the Majors and he went on to have a twelve-year career in the Big Leagues.\u00c2\u00a0 He helped the Pirates win the National League East in the season after his no-hitter, winning nineteen games, starting the All-Star Game for the NL and finishing fourth on the Cy Young award ballot.\u00c2\u00a0 He lasted just 2.1 innings in the World Series opener against the Baltimore Orioles and didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t pitch again in the series, but the Pirates won the Fall Classic 4-3 and Ellis had certainly earned his ring over the course of the season.<\/p>\n<p>That\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s not what he\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll be remembered for though.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This week&#8217;s Web Pick is an animated video
