\"Web-Pick\"It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s more of a web \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcpicks\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 of the week today as the \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcAlex Rodriguez running across the pitching mound\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 saga has prompted much debate about the infamous \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcunwritten rules\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 that govern baseball.<\/p>\n

The incident in question occurred in a game between the Yankees and A\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s when Alex Rodriguez made an out on the basepads and ran across the pitcher\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s mound on his way back to the dugout. Oakland A\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s pitcher Dallas Braden went brilliantly barmy<\/a> about it, claiming that A-Rod had broken one of the unwritten rules of baseball.<\/p>\n

Various books have been written about the so-called unwritten rules and I reviewed<\/a> Paul Dickson\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s contribution last November.\u00c2\u00a0 The nature of unwritten rules, in baseball and any other community, is that they are governed by the members of that community and different people will not always agree on them.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n

In a recent article on MLB.com<\/a>, Brewers manager Ken Macha and D-Backs manager A. J. Hinch both classed A-Rod\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s alleged violation as a \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcnew one\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 to them, whereas St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa claimed “there are a lot of current players who wouldn’t know that rule \u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 I guarantee that young man [Braden] has studied baseball history”.<\/p>\n

Former Major Leaguer Morgan Ensberg found A-Rod \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcnot guilty\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/a> in one of a number of typically interesting and funny posts on the subject at his ever-enjoyable blog. His most recent<\/a> is a response to an article on \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcunwritten rules\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/a> by Jerry Crasnick at ESPN.com.<\/p>\n

The unwritten rules are a very subjective, sometimes contradictory, set of laws and that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s partly what makes them\u00c2\u00a0such an\u00c2\u00a0interesting topic to learn about.<\/p>\n
