{"id":8377,"date":"2010-06-28T07:01:27","date_gmt":"2010-06-28T06:01:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/baseballgb.co.uk\/?p=8377"},"modified":"2010-06-29T18:35:15","modified_gmt":"2010-06-29T17:35:15","slug":"weekly-hit-ground-ball-zambrano-strikes-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/baseballgb.co.uk\/?p=8377","title":{"rendered":"Weekly Hit Ground Ball: Zambrano strikes again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-7400\" title=\"WhgbHlSq\" src=\"https:\/\/baseballgb.co.uk\/wp-content\/WhgbHlSq.jpg\" alt=\"WhgbHlSq\" width=\"200\" height=\"225\" \/>If we needed baseball to be a diversion from other disappointing sporting events this past week, and we undoubtedly did, then once again MLB came to our rescue.<\/p>\n<p>The D-Backs\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Edwin Jackson pitched the fourth no-hitter of the season, throwing 149 pitches and walking eight hitters in the process.\u00c2\u00a0 It should have been the fifth no-hitter of 2010, of course, had Jim Joyce made the right call on out number 27 for Armando Galarraga.\u00c2\u00a0 A mystifyingly bad call followed by demands for instant replay.\u00c2\u00a0 That sounds painfully familiar.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, baseball brings us plenty of joy, but it is also capable of causing extreme frustration.\u00c2\u00a0 Just ask Carlos Zambrano.<\/p>\n<p>It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s been a strange season so far for the Chicago Cubs\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 pitcher Carlos Zambrano and his frustration came out in typically spectacular fashion on Friday during a day game against the White Sox.<\/p>\n<p>The volatile Venezuelan has gone backwards over the last two and a half seasons since his Cy Young candidate form of 2007.\u00c2\u00a0 Zambrano got pummelled by Atlanta for eight runs in 1.1 innings on Opening Day this year and he was shifted to the bullpen three starts later, making thirteen relief appearances before returning to the rotation on 4 June against the Astros. Zambrano pitched a good game in his fourth appearance back as a starter against the Angels, one run conceded over seven innings, and many questioned whether this was a mere fleeting glimpse of the Big Z of old or if had he genuinely turned the corner?\u00c2\u00a0 <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I was among those giving this question serious thought.\u00c2\u00a0 While Cubs General Manager Jim Hendry and Manager Lou Piniella had the all-important real world scenario to consider, I was looking at Zambrano through fantasy-baseball eyes.\u00c2\u00a0 Emboldened by my move to the top of the BGB Fantasy league, I had decided that my starting pitching could be improved, not wanting to rest on my laurels, and Zambrano was available as a free agent.\u00c2\u00a0 I looked at that Angels performance at the beginning of last week and thought long and hard about adding him to my roster.\u00c2\u00a0 Another strong seven-inning outing and other owners would surely be quick to snatch him from the pile, but could I really trust him to follow up that performance with another quality start?<\/p>\n<p>The answer I came to was \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcno\u00e2\u20ac\u2122.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s not so much the moves you do make, but the ones that you don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t make that turn out to be the most important.\u00c2\u00a0 As I watched Zambrano trudge towards the dugout after giving up four runs in the first inning on Friday, I couldn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t help but let out a sigh of relief.\u00c2\u00a0 When the coverage came back from the commercial break and we saw what Carlos the Crazy Man had just done in the dugout, well, it was a definite bullet dodged.<\/p>\n<div style=\"float:right;margin-left:5px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/view.picapp.com\/pictures.photo\/sports\/chicago-cubs-starting\/image\/8589463?term=carlos+zambrano\" target=\"_blank\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Carlos Zambrano reacts after he gave up a two-run scoring hit to New York Mets batter Jose Reyes in New York\" onmousedown=\"return false;\" src=\"http:\/\/view3.picapp.com\/pictures.photo\/image\/8589463\/chicago-cubs-starting\/chicago-cubs-starting.jpg?size=234&amp;imageId=8589463\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Carlos Zambrano reacts after he gave up a two-run scoring hit to New York Mets batter Jose Reyes in the second inning of their MLB National League baseball game in New York April 20, 2010. REUTERS\/Ray Stubblebine (UNITED STATES\" width=\"234\" height=\"385\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><script src=\"http:\/\/view.picapp.com\/\/JavaScripts\/OTIjs.js\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script>Zambrano had completely blown his top, which was perhaps understandable considering he had just started the game so poorly.\u00c2\u00a0 What was not so understandable was why he decided that his poor start was Derrek Lee\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s fault.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Juan Pierre had led off the inning with a double down the right-field line.\u00c2\u00a0 It barely stayed fair over the first-base bag and with Lee anticipating a possible bunt, there was no chance of the ball being fielded.\u00c2\u00a0 Zambrano thought otherwise and started screaming in Lee\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s face for not making the play.\u00c2\u00a0 It didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t make any sense, both because Lee wasn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t to blame for Zambrano\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s poor pitching and because Lee is 6 foot 5 inches tall and not the most obvious person you would want to square up to.<\/p>\n<p>Luckily for Carlos, he was dragged away and marched into the clubhouse, where Piniella told him to have a shower, get dressed and get lost.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s far from the first time that Zambrano has behaved in this way and as Jim Hendry suspended the pitcher, it was clear that the Cubs are getting tired of his behaviour.\u00c2\u00a0 \u00e2\u20ac\u0153You have every right to say it like that, that it&#8217;s a recurring situation. And every time it recurs, it is a little bit more disappointing\u00e2\u20ac\u009d, <a href=\"http:\/\/sports.espn.go.com\/chicago\/mlb\/news\/story?id=5328972\" target=\"_blank\">said Hendry<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen, Zambrano\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s equally combustible friend, defended the Cubs\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 pitcher, <a href=\"http:\/\/sports.espn.go.com\/chicago\/mlb\/news\/story?id=5331229\" target=\"_blank\">stating<\/a> \u00e2\u20ac\u0153we cannot criticize this kid for that. That&#8217;s the way he is. Carlos has his own way. That&#8217;s the intensity this kid brings\u00e2\u20ac\u009d.\u00c2\u00a0 When a team is winning and the player is performing well, that intensity is seen as a positive.\u00c2\u00a0 When a team is going through a bad patch and the player is performing badly, that intensity becomes a big problem.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Simply put: Zambrano\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s not pitching well enough for his theatrics to be accommodated.<\/p>\n<p>That\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s not a problem that I have to deal with though.\u00c2\u00a0 After passing on Zambrano I decided to pick up the much-maligned Carl Pavano instead, who responded by throwing a complete game shutout against the Mets on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Jim Hendry no doubt wishes\u00c2\u00a0that running a baseball team could prove to be so easy in the real world.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Baseball brings us plenty of joy, but it is also capable of causing extreme frustration.
