British Baseball Beat: Leicester are Midlands champs, others book playoff places

bbbHlsqLeague champions and playoff spots are being decided now that the regular season nears its close.

There were celebrations in Leicester as the Blue Sox sealed a first regular season championship, while Richmond Knights made it seventeen wins in a row to end their season.

We round-up all of the action from last Sunday’s games and preview the big clashes scheduled for this coming weekend.

NBL: Blazers secure a top-two finish

The top two positions in the National Baseball League were confirmed on Sunday as Bracknell Blazers (19-3) won both games of a double-header against Southampton Mustangs (13-13).  The Blazers, defending NBL champions don’t forget, cannot now be caught for the second and final automatic qualifying spot for the National Baseball Championships, although the battle between them and London Mets (21-3) for the regular season title is still alive.

Herts Falcons (8-16) and Croydon Pirates (10-16) split a double-header at the latter’s Roundshaw Field.  No details of the other two scheduled double-headers have been published at time of writing.

This Sunday, the third-placed Richmond Flames (12-10) host the Mets, the Pirates host the Blazers, the Falcons host the Essex Arrows (3-21) and Mildenhall Bulldogs (6-14) host the Mustangs at RAF Feltwell.  Continue reading →

British Baseball Beat: Pirates prosper, Eagles soar and much more

bbbHlsqThe British Baseball leagues get ever more fascinating as the regular season reaches its final stages.

There’s something to play for in each division, whether that’s teams going for a league title, a play-off spot or simply wanting to end the season on a high note.

And we now know where the season finale will take place. It has been announced this week that this year’s National Senior Baseball Championships (NBC) event has been awarded to Herts Baseball Club. Grovehill Ballpark in Hemel Hempstead will stage the marquee tournament over the 4-5 September weekend.  Continue reading →

British Baseball Beat: Playoff picture taking shape

bbbHlsqMajor League Baseball teams are deep in contemplation trying to decide whether they are in the playoff running and therefore whether they should be buyers or sellers as Saturday’s non-waiver trading deadline draws near.

While there might not be trades involving multi-million dollar players at stake, teams in Britain are also staring at the standings, studying the schedules and working out where their seasons may be headed.

After last Sunday’s results, some teams already know that their playoff place has been secured. For others, there’s all to play for over the next few weeks of the regular season.  Continue reading →

British Baseball Beat: Great Britain begin their 2010 European Championship campaign

bbbHlsqWe have a mix of domestic and international news this week, as the usual British Baseball Federation action is joined by the start of a major international baseball tournament.

The Senior Great Britain National Team has enjoyed unprecedented success over the last three years: a silver medal finish in the 2007 European Championships and a Second Round appearance in the 2009 World Cup.  With those achievements behind them, Team GB head out on the tournament trail yet again this week for the 2010 European Championships in Germany, with the team’s first game scheduled for Friday.

Great Britain face a significant challenge in repeating their 2007 success but guided by a new Manager, Pat Doyle, and General Manager, Jason Greenberg, you can be certain that the half-hearted, lamentable performance of England’s football team this summer will not be repeated in the ballparks of Stuttgart, Heidenheim and Neuenberg.  The roster for this tournament contains a number of current or former BBF league players alongside British-eligible players intent on representing the country with pride.   Continue reading →

British Baseball Beat: London Tournament, BBF Leagues and Team GB’s EC roster

bbbHlsqThere were only three British Baseball Federation league contests on Sunday as teams were either taking a break or participating in other events, such as the London International Tournament that took place on Saturday and Sunday in Croydon.

A full report on the London International Tournament is available on the BBF website.  The reigning National Baseball League champions Bracknell Blazers won the main event, defeating the Essex Arrows 21-2 in the final, while PC Wolves from France took the Frank Brady trophy on run difference.  The annual Home Run Derby on Saturday was won by the Mildenhall Bulldogs’ Mike McClure.  Rumours of a Home Run hit-off between McClure and ‘Big Papi’ David Ortiz are unconfirmed.

And completely made up.

Two of the teams, Latino Stars and Vatos, didn’t show up and unfortunately it looks like that caused a few organizational problems.  Ideas are already being floated to add a similar Midlands-based event to the baseball calendar next year.  Continue reading →

British Baseball Beat: Herts Raptors in raptures

bbbHlsqThe past weekend saw America celebrating the date in history when they declared their independence from Great Britain; however, strangely enough it also saw the UK reaffirming its relationship with America’s National Pastime.

Coverage of Major League Baseball returned to a prominent position after an absence for a season and a half thanks to BBC Five Live Sports Extra, while the British Baseball leagues produced arguably the best weekend of action of the season so far.

Several teams were able to establish some daylight between themselves and the playoff-chasing pack and Herts Raptors gave the performance of the weekend by stunning a league-leader to earn their first victory of 2010.  Continue reading →

British Baseball Beat: Reduced schedule creates opportunities for others

bbbHlsqAfter a host of exciting developments in recent weeks, the British Baseball league games from last weekend were something of an anticlimax.  Not because of the games that took place, but the games that didn’t.

There were a number of empty ballfields in Britain on Sunday, either through games being postponed or games being forfeited.

Still, that gave the teams that were playing a chance to gain an advantage over their competitors.  Add in an impressive schedule for the coming weekend, including the NBL Independence Day event on Saturday, and there’s plenty to take a look at.

NBL: Mets and Blazers stay ahead

The London Mets (17-2) and Bracknell Blazers (15-2) continue to blaze a trail at the top of the National Baseball League as both took double-header sweeps on Sunday.

The Blazers’ two victories came in unusual circumstances as the Richmond Flames (11-6) had to forfeit both games due to Rob Unsell suffering an injury in the first inning of the first scheduled game and the team having no substitutes to call on.  The Mets got their wins at the expense of Southampton Mustangs (9-10), although the close score in the second game (8-6) was another sign that the Mustangs have settled into life in the top-tier. Essex Arrows (3-14) and Croydon Pirates (5-12) split a double-header in the other two NBL games of the day.  Full details and reaction can be found in Simon Fitzjohn’s weekly report.

The results mean that the London Mets maintain top spot, with the Blazers one game behind and having stretched their lead over the third-placed Flames to four games.

NBL Independence Day event this Saturday

The eight NBL teams will gather at the Croydon Pirates’ Roundshaw Field this Saturday for the second ‘Special Event’ of the 2010 season: the NBL Independence Day event.  The new concept is designed to showcase the top-tier of British baseball by bringing all the teams together and putting on a show that can bring in a crowd and generate some positive publicity for the sport.  The first event, The Summer Classic at Herts’ Grovehill Ballpark, was deemed to be a success and all involved will be looking to build on that positive start.  The schedule, split over two diamonds, is as follows:

12:00    Pirates v Blazers
12:00    Falcons v Arrows
15:00    Flames v Mets
15:00    Bulldogs v Mustangs

AAA: Kings keep on winning, A’s and Patriots split a double-header

The battle between the AAA-North ‘Big Four’ didn’t quite materialize as the double-header between Liverpool Trojans (13-5) and Harrogate Tigers (10-4) was postponed.  Manchester A’s (12-6) would have vaulted over the Trojans into the top spot had they won both games of their double-header against Menwith Hill Patriots (11-7), but the Pats recovered from losing the opening game 9-1 and edged the second contest 2-1.  The split keeps the A’s one game behind the Trojans, with the Tigers also being one back of the lead but with four games in hand on their rivals.  The Tigers and A’s are due to meet for a double-header at the latter’s Allen Field this Sunday.

In the South, Bristol Badgers’ (4-4) playoff hopes took a dent as they lost twice to the league-leading Oxford Kings (11-1).  The Badgers still have games in hand on their rivals, but they next face a tricky double-header against Bracknell Inferno (10-4) this Sunday that could push them further behind and make the rest of their games ‘must win’ affairs. Alternatively, the Badgers could win twice and really set up the remainder of their season.  That’s what makes this AAA-South race one to watch.

Inferno are a good team but they are not unbeatable, as the Essex Redbacks showed on Sunday by winning the second game of their double-header to earn a split.  It was only a few weeks ago that the Redbacks, making their BBF debut this season don’t forget, were 0-6.  Now they are 5-7 and showing definite signs of a team improving and growing in confidence as the season progresses.

AA: Bolton boost title hopes, Knights make it ten wins on the spin

In the North, Bolton Robots of Doom (11-3) cemented their place at the top of the table by taking two wins from Sheffield Bladerunners (7-5), the second of which coming via a forfeit by their opponents.  The Bladerunners are scheduled to host Oldham North Stars (0-13) this Sunday, while the Robots are away to Humber Pilots (5-4).

In the South, Essex Archers’ (8-3) plan to showcase baseball as part of the Waltham Abbey Town Show on Saturday didn’t come to fruition as Thames Valley Bisons (4-9) forfeited the two scheduled games, although baseball was featured as part of the Show on Sunday thanks to the Essex Arrows and Croydon Pirates.  In the other two games, Richmond Knights (10-1) made it ten wins in a row as they defeated Windsor Bears (7-5) twice.  This Sunday’s games include a double-header between Croydon Pirates III and Essex Archers and the Pool A-leading Poole Piranhas hosting the Bisons.

In the Midlands, MK Bucks (5-5) and Birmingham Maple Leafs (9-4) earned one win apiece in their double-header, setting the stage for Leicester Blue Sox (8-4) to close within half a game of Birmingham at the top of the table.  The Blue Sox got there, but not quite in the way they would have liked.  Mildenhall Bulldogs 2 (1-8) had to forfeit their two games against Leicester, handing the Blue Sox two 7-0 victories.  They will be hoping their club mates, Leicester Blue Sox 2 (2-8), can do them a huge favour by taking a game or two from the MK Bucks this Sunday.

A: Dragons defeat the Rays in the battle of Pool leaders

The battle between the Pool A and Pool B leaders went the way of Richmond Dragons (8-2) by a score of 6-3.  They now have a one-game leader over Guildford Mavericks in Pool A, while Braintree Rays’ (5-3)lead in Pool B is down to half a game over Old Timers.  The Rays’ local rivals Chelmsford Clippers (5-5)may have seen their hopes of sneaking into the playoffs put to rest on Sunday as they had to forfeit their game against Bracknell Pyros (2-6).  This Sunday, the Old Timers host the Dragons, while the Herts Raptors seek their first win of the season with a game against the Rays.

Great Britain National Rosters announced

On the international scene, Team GB announced their Seniors, Juniors and Cadets rosters for their respective tournaments this summer.

The Seniors are heading to Germany for the European Baseball Championships, aiming to build on their excellent silver-medal showing in the 2007 event and the lessons learned from last year’s World Cup campaign.  New Head Coach Pat Doyle and General Manager Jason Greenberg have put together a 40-man preliminary roster that will be reduced to 24 before the tournament begins on 22 July.

The Junior National Team are competing at the CEB European Junior Qualifier in Attnang-Puchheim, Austria, at the beginning of August, while the Cadet National Team will travel to Nykoping, Sweden for the CEB European Cadet Qualifier held between 19 and 24 July.

Full details of all three rosters can be found on the BBF website.  And don’t forget that the fundraising effort is in full swing.

British Baseball Beat: Postseason dreams

bbbHlsqWe’ve reached the point in the British baseball season when playoff predictions start coming to the fore.  Not that anything has been decided yet – far from it, there’s still plenty to play for -  but the teams have now played enough games that you can get a good idea of who is going to be in the postseason mix.

There are two main stages to the British baseball postseason in 2010.  The ‘playoffs’ stage takes place on Saturday 21 and 28 August, the first Saturday being an A and AA league exclusive round and then all four leagues being represented on the 28th.  The playoff games are there to determine the entrants to the marquee event of the British baseball season: the National Baseball Championships (NBC), taking place on 4-5 September.  Continue reading →

British Baseball Beat: Perfect records ruined, first wins gained

bbbHlsqThree teams went into last Sunday’s games in the British Baseball leagues with perfect records, while several teams were still seeking their first taste of victory this season.

Furthermore, there were various contests between teams battling at the top of their respective leagues, most notably in the National Baseball League where London Mets and Bracknell Blazers battled for supremacy.

With so many storylines waiting to be written, it was no surprise that last Sunday produced another round of exciting games.

NBL – Top two teams split a double-header, Arrows get their first NBL victories

Bracknell hosted a top-of-the-table clash on Sunday between the hometown Blazers and the London Mets.  The two teams have appeared to be closely matched over the season so far and that was in evidence on Sunday as they split the double-header.  A 10-3 win in the opener by the Blazers (11-2) set up the possibility of a sweep, but the Mets (13-2)  battled back to take the second game 7-1 and to maintain a one game lead in the standings, having played two games more than their closest rivals.

The split gave the third-placed Richmond Flames (9-4) a chance to gain some ground and they took full advantage by defeating Croydon Pirates (4-9)  twice to move within three games of the league-leading Mets.  Southampton Mustangs (7-8) continued their recent good form by winning both games of a double-header against Herts Falcons (4-9), while the Essex Arrows (2-11) finally got their first two wins of the season, getting the better of a depleted Mildenhall Bulldogs (4-9) team who have now dropped nine in a row.  Further details about the games can be found in Simon Fitzjohn’s report.

The Arrows will have a tough task to build on their victories as they host the Blazers this Sunday.  The Mets travel to Herts, the Pirates welcome the Mustangs to Roundshaw Field and the Bulldogs travel to Richmond.

AAA – First loss for the Kings, first wins for the Redbacks

Oxford Kings (9-1) saw their unbeaten start to the season come to an end on Sunday as they lost the opener of a double-header against Herts Eagles (7-3) by a score of 7-2.  The Kings quickly put the loss behind them and battled to a 4-2 win in the second game, leaving them two games ahead of the Eagles and Bracknell Inferno (7-3).  Bracknell were swept by the Kings the previous weekend, but they got straight back to winning ways with two comfortable wins away to London Metros (2-6).  Oxford are not playing this weekend, giving Inferno (two games at home to Kent Mariners) and the Eagles (two games at home to Bristol Badgers) a chance to close the gap.

Meanwhile, there was joy at Melbourne Park as the Essex Redbacks (2-6) won their first ever games in the BBF leagues, beating Kent Mariners (0-10) twice to leave their opponents rooted the foot of the table.

In the North, Liverpool Trojans (11-5) effectively slipped to third place after they split a double-header against Menwith Hill Patriots (9-5).  The Trojans were missing several players and while starting pitcher Ron Vondy was excellent as ever in the first game, a lack of pitching options in the second saw the Patriots march away with an 18-8 win.  That makes it three losses from their last four games for Liverpool while their conquerors from the previous weekend, Manchester A’s (10-4), made it five wins in a row by taking two wins from Glasgow (1-13).

This Sunday, the A’s host Halton Jaguars, the Trojans host Glasgow and the league-leading Harrogate Tigers (9-3) are away to the Patriots.

AA – Archers hit the target against Poole, Robots of Doom down Manchester

Essex Archers (5-3) completed a memorable day for their ballclub, following up the Arrows’ debut NBL wins by landing Poole Piranhas (7-1) with their first loss of the season.  All signs pointed to the Piranhas making it seven wins in a row after a six run fourth-inning, but the Archers plated four runs in the bottom of the sixth and held on in the seventh to record an 8-6 victory.  The Piranhas responded by taking the second game 13-5.  In the other contest on Sunday, Sidewinders (6-3) took two wins against Croydon Pirates III (4-5).  Poole are scheduled to face the win-less Horsham Hurricanes on Sunday, while Windsor Bears (6-3) host Pirates III and the Pool B leaders, Richmond Knights (5-1), are away to Brentwood Stags (0-9).

In the Midlands, Leicester Blue Sox 2 (2-6) got their first wins of the season although not in the manner they would have hoped.  Mildenhall Bulldogs 2 (2-5) had to forfeit the double-header due to a lack of players, handing Leicester two 7-0 victories.  While their club mates had an unexpected rest, the Leicester Blue Sox first team (4-4) was embroiled in a closely-contested battle against the league-leading Birmingham Maple Leafs (8-3).  Birmingham took the opener 14-6, but the Blue Sox fought back to share the spoils with a 12-4 victory in the second game.  The Blue Sox are scheduled to be back in action again on Sunday, although we don’t yet know whether Bulldogs 2 will be able to field a team at RAF Feltwell.

In the North, Manchester Torrent’s (8-4) two-game lead in the standings following the previous Sunday was wiped away by Bolton Robots of Doom (7-3), who beat Torrent twice at home.  Humber Pilots (5-4)won the only other game by a score of 13-1 over Oldham North Stars (0-11).  It doesn’t get any easier for Oldham as they travel to Bolton for two games on Sunday, while Manchester need to regroup quickly for their visit to Sheffield to take on the Bladerunners (5-3).

A – Dragons drop a game, Pryos win, Raptors’ first win getting closer

With both the Kings in AAA and the Piranhas in AA losing their unbeaten records, it was perhaps already written that the only other team with a perfect record would see their run come to an end as well.  And so it turned out, as Richmond Dragons (7-1) lost 19-10 to Guildford Mavericks (5-2), a result described by the victors as “a fantastic victory, fully deserved”.  While the Dragons lost for the first time, the Bracknell Pyros (1-6) won for the first time in 2010 with a 26-15 win over London Marauders (2-4).  That leaves Herts Raptors (0-7) as the only team in the A League without a win, but they got tantalizingly close on Sunday as they narrowly lost to Chelmsford Clippers (5-3) 24-21.  The Clippers admitted that “it was one to really forget for the neutral, and perhaps for the players too”.

This Sunday is set up perfectly, as the top two teams in both Pool A (Dragons and Mavericks) and Pool B (Clippers and Braintree Rays) are scheduled to meet.

The rest of the leagues followed suit on Sunday, with top-of-the-table clashes and results that had an instant impact at the sharp end of the standings.
