MLB This Week: Good match-ups in prospect

It’s a slow start to the UK-evening viewing this working week, but the early MLB games pick up from there with some good match-ups among them.

Wednesday’s games include one from the important Astros-Mariners series, whilst the Brewers are at home against the Reds and the A’s are hosting the Rangers.

On Thursday there are three potentially exciting match-ups starting with Indians-Red Sox as a play-off preview.  The other two stand-outs depend on how the probable pitching schedules actually work out, but currently we’re due to have Aaron Nola and Max Scherzer squaring off in Washington, and Madison Bumgarner and Jacob deGrom going in New York.

We then end the working week, and start the Bank Holiday weekend, with an early game from Wrigley Field between the Cubs and Reds.

MLB This Week: Toussaint debut, Brewers-Cubs times two and more

There’s a chance to catch some pre-midnight UK time baseball every day this working week.

Whilst the Friday game, Mets-Phillies, isn’t a true early game (starting at 23.05), on all the other days there’s some good baseball to watch during the British evening.

Monday’s early game is part of a double-header at SunTrust Park as the Braves host the Marlins, with the early game being a make-up date for a rain-out from the start of August. Touki Toussaint, one of Atlanta’s crop of promising young pitchers, is scheduled to make his Major League debut in this one.

You don’t often see BT Sport showing two games from the same series back-to-back during the working week, but they’re doing that this week on Tuesday and Wednesday with the Brewers and Cubs.

On Thursday evening there will be live baseball on two BT Sport channels, with the Rays-Yankees game on BT Sport2 being joined by coverage from the Little League World Series on BT Sport/ESPN.

All times are in BST.

MLB This Week: Eleven early games to choose from

It’s been a couple of months since I’ve been able to do much baseball writing, but at least events have transpired to allow me to get back on track at a great time in the season.

With the best part of two months still to play in the regular season, the National League in particular still have many twists and turns to come. And whilst the American League may already have four teams looking very likely to claim a play-off spot, the second Wild Card could be a source of plenty of excitement for this A’s fan.

Here are the pre-midnight UK starts for the coming working week. A few to note:

  • The Astros-Giants pitching match-up on Tuesday looks a belter, and that’s available to watch both via an MLB.TV subscription and BT Sport.
  • Chris Archer’s second start with the Buccos comes on Wednesday in a road game at Coors Field against the Rockies.
  • The Braves-Nationals game is listed as a second Facebook Game of the Week on the current MLB.com listings, although it is also being broadcast on TV in the UK so that those without a Facebook account aren’t blocked from viewing it completely.
  • A Corey Kluber start is always an event worth watching, so that’s a good reason to catch at least some of Cleveland’s game against the Twins on Thursday.

All times are in BST.

MLB This Week: England Expects …

If you were hoping for an MLB game at the same time as England’s World Cup opener on Monday, either to avoid it or to give you something else to flick to if the nerves get too much, then unfortunately you’ll be disappointed.

We do have an early MLB game on Monday, and it’s a good one between the Yankees and Nationals, but it’s a 22.05 start. So, your baseball fix will have to serve the purpose of helping you celebrate, or cheering you up, depending on how England do against Tunisia and whether you’re an England fan or not.

Wednesday and Thursday evenings, as often is the case, offer the most choice for some live baseball at a convenient time this working week.

All times are in BST.

MLB This Week: Not just the World Cup

It’s the week that the FIFA World Cup gets underway and I’m sure many of you reading will be indulging in some football viewing over the next few weeks to complement the baseball.

It’s a fairly quiet working week for early baseball games, although this week at least the World Cup doesn’t offer too much of an alternative other than the Spain-Portugal contest on Friday night.

As for the baseball, Wednesday and Thursday are the evenings to set aside and there are some good-looking games amongst them. Cubs-Brewers on Wednesday is free to watch for all on MLB.com and that’s sure to be one of the most competitive series of the week, whilst a Chris Sale start against Baltimore (on BT Sport/ESPN in the UK) could be strike-out central.

As for Thursday, BT Sport will be showing two games that evening including a Justin Verlander start for the Astros against the A’s.

The Phillies’ strong start to the season has become derailed of late as they enter their home series against Colorado on Tuesday having lost 11 of their last 16 games. The Rockies haven’t exactly been firing on all cylinders of late either, heading into the series on a 4-game losing streak as part of a 3-7 stretch over their last 10 games. Both teams will be determined to put a run of wins together soon and Thursday’s series finale will make for interesting viewing.

MLB This Week: Memorial Day and More

Monday is a holiday on both sides of the Atlantic and that means our Bank Holiday weekend is brought to a close by a bonanza of Memorial Day day-games.

There are some enticing match-ups within them, not least the start of the Astros-Yankees series and the Cardinals-Brewers series. The former is on BT Sport/ESPN and is available for all to watch for free on MLB.com

The Mets and Braves have a double-header on Monday and the opener should see Jacob deGrom on the mound, although likely won’t see the Ronald Acuna in the batter’s box after he came out of the Braves’ game yesterday with a worrisome knee injury.

Later in the week, BT Sport will be broadcasting the Blue Jays-Red Sox came on Wednesday and the Rays-A’s game on Thursday, whilst the Facebook exclusive game on Wednesday is Cardinals-Brewers.

The price of MLB.TV annual subscription has been reduced for the first time this season (it’s always promoted as a discount, but essentially it means you’re paying less because it covers less of the season) so is now available for $70, which works out at approximately £84 when adding on VAT.

The Houston Astros are in interleague play against the San Francisco Giants and Wednesday’s game should see an excellent pitching match-up with Jeff Samardzija and Justin Verlander the probable pitchers.

There are two games on BT Sport on Thursday, as the Pirates and Reds get things going from 17.35 on the ESPN channel before the Mariners and A’s start on BT Sport1 from 20.35.
