The Maltsters overtook my Isotopes in the standings after a comfortable 8-2 win. The offense took five out of six categories with Trumbo belting three homers and Peralta and Freeman each going deep twice. Jhonny knocked in eight while Eaton scored seven runs. On the mound, Scherzer and Bauer had double-digit strikeouts and combined with Santiago and Greinke to take ERA and WHIP. Alexei Ramirez stole three bases for my team while Jepsen had the lone hold in an otherwise forgettable week for my team, which also included more injuries.

Finally, the Riverkings and Bits & Bytes ended in a 5-5 tie. The Riverkings bullpen contributed four wins, seven saves and a hold while Dozier scored seven runs. Bits & Bytes had the better of the offense as Belt hit three homers  and Pedroia went deep twice, but Strasburg’s injury means the already light pitching staff could well run the risk of missing the 20 inning minimum net week unless reinforcements are added.

The week nine matchups

Slugs (1st) v Isotopes (11th)
Jesmond (2nd) v Batteries Essential (7th)
Riverkings (3rd) v RBIs (8th)
Sox (4th) v Knights (5th)
Beck ‘Nams (6th) v Maltsters (10th)
Iron Men (9th) v Chasers (12th)
Bits & bytes (13th) v Norwich (14th)

A good sporting weekend for the Knights, what with Newcastle avoiding the drop and a 9-2 win against the Chasers. Encarnacion (three homers) and Upton (two homers) each knocked in eight as the Knights completed an offensive sweep, while five different pitchers picked up wins, including Liriano who struck out 14. Storen had three saves and there were two each from Street and Gregerson. The Chasers took ERA and WHIP thanks to nice weeks from Carlos Martinez, Zimmermann and Cashner and fell just .001 shot of a tie in average.

Finally, Beck ‘Nams and Bits & Bytes ended 5-5. Teixeira homered twice and Leonys Martin helped take average and OPS, while Hamels had two wins and Hammel struck out 17. Batteries Essential had runs and RBIs from Belt and Trout in an injury-ravaged lineup while McGee had two holds and Teheran helped take ERA and WHIP.

DL SPOTS: A REMINDER

Remember, if you pick up injuries, you have three DL spots at your disposal. move the injured player to one of them and you will open up a roster spot for a reinforcement from the free agent pool. there;’s no excuse for carrying lots of injured players without using the DL and doing so will only harm your chances of winning.

The week eight matchups

Sox (1st) v Slugs (3rd)
Riverkings (2nd) v Bits & Bytes (13th)
Beck ‘Nams (4th) v RBIs (11th)
Jesmond (5th) v Chasers (8th)
Knights (6th) v Iron Men (10th)
Batteries Essential (7th) v Norwich (14th)

A productive week from the outfield of Carlos Gomez, JD Martinez and Marte helped an offensive sweep, while Kluber’s 18 strikeout game, joined with 15 from Ubaldo and 14 from Cole, saw the staff pile up 80 strikeouts. The Slugs tightened their grip on top spot with an 11-1 win against the Maltsters. Gattis had a monster week with seven runs, five homers and 12 RBIs while Hanley hit two more bombs. Price won both his starts, Shields had 19 strikeouts and Soria picked up three saves. Four different Maltsters stole bases and Casilla had a win and two saves but the staff has been hit by the season-ending injury to bailey and now Jordan Walden is hurt.

Despite the Slugs picking up a big win, Beck ‘Nams still remain close behind after a 10-2 win against Norwich. There wasn’t much hitting for average but the Cincinnati trio of frazier, Bruce and Byrd each had multi-homer weeks and Hammel was the pick of the pitchers. Springer stole five bases for Norwich and Miller, Kimbrel and Rondon combined for six saves, but the rotation was roughed up this week.

An offensive sweep helped the Riverkings seal an 8-3 win against the Chasers. Simmons scored eight runs, while morales touched home seven times, homered and knocked in 10 runs. Grandal’s walkoff homer on Sunday night helped take longballs at the death. Familia had two saves and Porcello and King Felix made the difference in WHIP. The Chasers had eight runs, three homers and 12 RBIs from Reddick, while Gray won twice and helped take ERA ion a well-pitched matchup.

My Isotopes finally pick up a win, defeating Jesmond 7-4. It was a good week for the ofdfense as Cruz hit four homers, new recruit Ethier went deep twice and Jones, Ortiz, Altuve and Sandoval joined Cruz in batting north of .400. Miguel Gonzalez and Morrow helped take ERA and WHIP while Rodney had three saves. It was a light week for the starters as the Orioles and White Sox pitchers were affected by the postponements of two games in Baltimore early in the week. Travis and Myers gave Jesmond the edge in runs, Arenado homered three times and Neshek had two wins and a hold for the red-hot Astros.

The Sox had an incredible week on the mound, as Lance Lynn was the only pitcher to allow an earned run, and even then he had an ERA of 1.29. The team ERA and WHIP numbers were almost impossible to top. Perkins had three saves. Hosmer scored seven runs while Goldschmidt, Semien and Gordon each had multi-steal weeks, with Goldy batting .556 and Gordon .667. Batteries Essential had plenty of power as Kipnis and Miguel Cabrera each had three homers and Russell Martin went deep twice. Wood and Bumgarner each had a win and nine strikeouts.

Finally, an offensive sweep saw Bits & Bytes defeat Iron Men 6-4. Carpenter scored eight runs, Trout homered twice and Ellsbury stole five bases and batted .538 for the week. Strsbrurg, Teheran and McHugh each had a win. Gerritt Cole and Keuchel helped Iron men take ERA and WHIP and O’Day had the lone hold.

Transactions

The Sox decided to cut bait on Adrian Beltre, who is now an Isotope after I placed a waiver claim on him. Yes, he’s off to a slow start, but it was surprising to see a player of his quality cut loose when I’m sure the Sox could have used him as trade bait. Other notable moves include the Knights picking up Addison Russell, who was dropped by the Slugs for Marisnick, and the RBIs cutting Rollins for the red-hot Hechavarria.

Beck ‘Nams (2nd) v Jesmond (3rd)

Jesmond are in second after defeating the Sox 7-5. Travis, Chris Davis and Myers were the offensive stars while Carrasco had a win and 13 strikeouts. Archer also had a very good week, and could have helped Jesmond take ERA and WHIP had he not been on the bench on Sunday. The Sox ran wild with 10 steals, including pairs from Gordon and Gardner, while Perkins had three saves and joined Robertson and Betances in not allowing an earned run.

My Isotopes suffered their third straight loss, going down 7-5 against Norwich. Abreu, Dickerson and Bryant helped Norwich take five offensive categories while Kimbrel, Rondon, Miller and Hughes made the difference in saves and holds. Morrow and Simon helped my staff salvage wins, ERA and WHIP, while Altuve swiped three bases. But my pitching staff may be without Wainwright for the rest of the year.

Bits & Bytes fell a homer shy of an offensive sweep in their 6-4 win against the Knights. Kemp scored seven times, knocked in five and stole two bases while Alex Gordon had a multi-homer week. Ventura and McHugh helped take WHIP. Encarnacion homered twice for the Knights, while Salazar had a win with 11 strikeouts and joined Bradley in taking ERA.

The week four matchups are as follows

Slugs (1st) v Maltsters (9th)
Jesmond (2nd) v Isotopes (14th)
Beck ‘Nams (3rd) v Norwich (5th)
Sox (4th) v Batteries Essential (13th)
Riverkings (6th) v Chasers (7th)
RBIs (8th) v Knights (12th)
Bits & Bytes 910th) v Iron Men (11th)

Reminder

The suspensions handed out after the White Sox/Royals brawl could mean some pitchers being forced to push a start back a few days. If you think this may mean you fall short of the 20 inning minimum, you may want to add an extra arm to your staff.

The Slugs are in first after their 9-2 win against Bits & Bytes. The offense struggled to hit for average but Zimmerman knocked in nine runs and Hanley Ramirez and Bautista each slugged a pair of homers. The pitching staff completed a sweep as Hahn picked up a win without allowing an earned run and the trio of Ross, price and Shields each struck out nine. Soria had a win and two saves. Carpenter and Trout helped Bits & bytes take average and OPS, but with Gomes, Rios and McGee all hurt but not being placed on the DL, the roster is three players light.

Two weeks, two losses for my isotopes, as the pitching struggles continued against the Riverkings, who ran out 7-5 winners. The Met pair of Harvey and DeGrom chipped win with wins while Porcello and Cueto had double-digit strikeouts. Another Met, Familia, had five saves as the bullpen racked up 10 in total and three holds. Offensively, Rizzo swiped two bases. My Isotopes at least had big offensive weeks from Cruz (7 R, 6 HR, 10 RBI, .500 AVG) and Adam Jones (6 R, 3 HR, 9 RBI, .520 AVG) but a rough week for the bullpen did damage to the team ERA and WHIP.

Jesmond fell a steal shy of a 6-6 tie against Iron Men, who nicked it 6-5. Iron Men posted great pitching numbers in a sweep, with Cole winning twice and striking out 14, while new Colorado closer Ottavino had two saves and Watson had a pair of holds. Marte had two steals and joined Kendrick in having multi-homer weeks. Souza had two homers, eight RBIs and two steals as Jesmond dominated the offensive categories with eight different players homering. Shelby Miller won his two starts.

KNIGHTS SWOOP ON WAIVER WIRE

The Knights made a big acquisition by claiming Carlos Gonzalez off waivers. I was very surprised to see a player of CarGo’s quality dropped, as even though he is an injury risk, he is still a player drafted in the fourth round. The Sox could easily have dangled him as trade bait but let him go for nothing. The Maltsters grabbed Joel Peralta, who appears to be the Dodgers’ closer until Jansen returns, while Norwich have picked up top White Sox prospect Rodon and can also see what Kris Bryant can do in the bigs after he was called up.

DL REMINDER

If you do have any injured players, please make sure you use your DL spots, which will then give you space to add replacements. Some teams are running the risk of losing matchups by carrying a number of hurt players, so make sure you aren’t damaging your chances of victory, especially if an injury to a small pitching staff means you may not meet the 20 inning minimum limit each week.

The early leaders are Jesmond, who handed the Knights a 10-1 loss. Nolan Arenado (2 HR, 7 RBI, 7 R .375 AVG), Carlos Santana and McCutchen (2 HR) carried the load offensively as Jesmond fell a steal shy of a hitting sweep. Carrasco had a win and 10 K and joined Archer and Shelby Miller in not allowing an earned run. Encarnacion and Pujols each hit two homers for the Knights, while the bullpen of Storen, Street, Peralta, Allen and Gregerson combined for eight saves.

JJ’s off to to a flier after thrashing my Isotopes 10-2. JJ had two of baseball’s hottest hitters to thanks, as Adrian Gonzalez (5 HR, 7 RBI, 8 R, .609 AVG) and Todd Frazier (3 HR, 8 RBI) did most of the offensive damage. In a loaded pitching staff, the best performers were Kazmir (W, 10K, 0.00 ERA) and Benoit (2 W, HLD). Adam Jones and Nelson Cruz each hit two homers for my team and Altuve stole two bases. Rodney had a win and two saves, but the rotation was hit by injuries to Holland and (possibly) Alvarez.

The Slugs fell a save shy of a pitching sweep as they defeated Batteries Essential 7-4. James Shields, Tyson Ross and David Price each had a win and double-digit strikeouts while Boxberger, Soria, Cecil and Romo each had either two saves or two holds. Cecil has lost the closing role in Toronto, but Soria is picking up saves in the absence of Detroit’s Joe Nathan. Hanley Ramirez hit .320 for the week, belting three homers and driving in seven and Bautista scored seven runs. The Slugs hit well, with Miguel Cabrera batting .520 for the week, hitting two homers and driving in eight runs. Pappelbon had two saves and Jimmy Nelson already looks a good pickup after his impressive season debut.

Norwich just got the better of Iron Men 7-5 in a close matchup. Corey Dickerson had two homers, nine RBIs and helped take OPS ans Norwich took four offensive categories. New Padre Kimbrel and Rondon each had two saves and Odorizzi, Hahn and Paxton helped take ERA and WHIP. Norwich also have Toronto rookie Castro in their bullpen. J.D. Martinez and Tulowitzki helped Iron Men take RBIs and average, while Keuchel and Wacha each picked up wins, Kluber struck out 17 and Ottavino, O’Day, Farquhar and Watson combined for eight holds.

Another matchup, another 7-5. this time the RBIs got the better of the Maltsters, thanks to an offensive sweep. Pedroia had two homers, while carpenter knocked in five runs and Reyes (.417) and Trout (.400) helped take average. The offense will need a new catcher with Yan Gomes on the DL. The pitching staff is very light on numbers, which could have cost them a few categories, but Teheran and Ventura each had a pair of wins. The Maltsters had three saves each from Holland and Casilla while Scherzer, Greinke and Bauer helped take ERA and WHIP.

The RBIs start the year with a win, defeating the Chasers 6-5. Eight different batters homered for the RBIs, including three for Votto, who also knocked in eight. Rollins had seven RBIs and two steals while Wade Davis picked up the lone save and Fister’s scoreless start made the difference in ERA. Kinsler was the star hitter for the Chasers, scoring 10 times, knocking in seven and hitting .440. Sonny Gray was the pick of the pitchers with a win and and ERA and WHIP of 0.59.

The Riverkings and Sox couldn’t be separated as each team had a sweep. The offensive categories went to the Sox as Salvador Perez hit three homers and drove in eight while fellow Royal Cain hit .4540 with five runs and five RBIs. King Felix and Harvey each had a win as the Riverkings swept the pitching stats. Cueto also didn’t allow an earned run, while Rosenthal had two saves.

PITCHING REMINDER

Remember that you need to meet the 20 inning minimum each week to stand a chance of winning any of the pitching categories. Now that rotations are taking shape with fifth members ready to go, you could be waving goodbye to a lot of category wins if you are currently using a small pitching staff. Now might be the time to look at other teams’ rosters to see if there’s a match for a trade or look at the free agent pool.

WEEK TWO MATCHUPS

Jesmond (1st) v Iron Men (11th)

Beck ‘Nams (2nd) v Chasers (9th)

Norwich (4th) v Sox (8th)

Riverkings (7th) v Isotopes (13th)

Fantasy drafts as perfect preparation for the season ahead

As expertly recapped by Mark, we had our BaseballGB Fantasy League draft on Saturday night.

It’s going to be my only draft of the year as I’m not a obsessive fantasy baseball player. Whilst others often have many teams, that approach generally just means I lose track of which players I’ve got on which teams and I start making mistakes (leaving starting pitchers on the bench on the wrong day, not replacing injured players promptly etc), which saps my enjoyment of taking part.

One team, possibly two, is enough to give me my fantasy baseball fix.

One thing I have learned over the years is that preparing for, and taking part in, fantasy baseball drafts is a great way to check how up-to-date your baseball knowledge is.

The first depressing inevitability of the normally joyous Spring Training period is that it comes with the sting of a batch of players who have their seasons either finished or seriously curtailed by injury before it has even begun. The Toronto Blue Jays’  Marcus Stroman and New York Mets’ Zach Wheeler and two of the more notable young players who will spend 2015 rehabbing from Tommy John elbow surgery rather than showcasing their talent on the field.

More minor injuries are also a factor to take into consideration from a fantasy perspective, not least because they can slip under the radar if not impacting a player or your ‘real’ team and can sometimes turn into more significant issues than first assessed.

My second round selection was the Washington Nationals’ Anthony Rendon. He offers a good solid mix of production across the board, but I was mindful of checking progress on his knee injury before clicking the ‘Draft’ button next to his name. It might be a selection that comes back to bite me, but it was a risk I was willing to take.

Checking through the fantasy player rankings also helps in remembering where players have ended up. So many transactions take place over the off-season that you can get to a mock draft and find that a player has changed teams without you realising.

That can have a direct influence on the fantasy baseball drafting process. A pitcher’s wins, saves or holds (if your league counts those too) are affected by the team they are on, both in terms of the quality of the team and in terms of the other players on that team that your potential draft target will be competing with (i.e. a potential source of saves may not get those opportunities if another relief pitcher has been added without you knowing it).

One of my late-round bench picks was Michael Morse who I selected to add a bit more power to my team. His move to the Miami Marlins over the offseason should see him starting regularly at first base and hitting behind Giancarlo Stanton (who was my first round selection), so hopefully there will be plenty of opportunities for him to drive some runs in.

The final factor to consider, or not, is Spring Training performance. Eye-catching stats, either good or bad, can be difficult to ignore, but you need to look at the context too in terms of whether there’s something real at play there (a change in hitting approach leading to better results, a potential injury affecting a pitcher’s delivery etc) or if it’s just a case of some good or bad luck in a small number of exhibition games.

The Oakland A’s Sonny Gray had a nightmare in his last Spring Training outing, getting hit hard by the Chicago White Sox whilst allowing 6 runs in 2.2 innings. I selected him regardless. I’d like to think that’s the rational part of me dismissing one meaningless Spring Training game, yet I suspect the A’s fan in me also wants to believe it was a case of bad luck too.

If there’s one thing that shows up my lack of true fantasy baseball dedication it’s the way that I let real life allegiances and bias affect the way I draft (some players I can’t bring myself to draft, not wanting to celebrate in their success). However, I like to think that’s part of what makes the fantasy baseball draft process a key part of preparing for the season ahead.

My hope and optimism for a good year for the A’s trumps everything else. Whether that proves to be misplaced or not will be decided over the next seven months and it’s a voyage of discovery I can’t wait to begin.

BaseballGB Fantasy League 2015: Draft recap

It’s that time of year again: 14 managers drafting 280 players in about 80 minutes. Here’s what happened in the 2015 BaseballGB Fantasy baseball draft.

Draft day is a real highlight of any baseball fan’s year. The anticipation, the excitement and the knowledge that the new season is not far away. Then you log into the draft room and learn your draft position. Out of 14 teams, I was picking… 11th. hardly ideal, but all is not lost. I had done three mock drafts, picking at the front middle and back of the order, so after consulting my late-order mock, I prepared to draft.

12. Anthony Rizzo(ChC – 1B) NE Riverkings
13. Edwin Encarnación (Tor – 1B) Newcastle Kn…
14. Max Scherzer(Was – SP) Cheshunt Mal…

No major surprises in the first six picks, as the yahoo rankings were followed. I was interested to see who would go second, as you could make good cases for a number of players, but Jesmond did what I would have done by taking Cutch and sorting out CF straight away. The first surprise came with Puig going 7th. I had hoped he would be around for my second pick, but not to be. I’m not sure I would have taken Puig over Abreu or Bautista, but it looks like he’ll be hitting third for the Dodgers this year, so his RBIs should rise and he has been hitting for power this spring. Having found the outfield tough in mock drafts, I was hoping for one of Bautista or Jones here, and the Slugs make my mind up for me.

12. Michael Brantley(Cle – CF) Batteries Es…
13. Ian Desmond (Was – SS) Jesmond Denn…
14. Stephen Strasburg(Was – SP) Bits & Bytes

I had decided to hold off taking an ace until the third or fourth round, so it was a question of which hitter to pair with Jones. I seriously hovered over Hanley Ramirez and Rendon here before going for Altuve. I would normally opt for more power here, but the average and steals at 2B are hard to ignore. I just hope I don’t regret it. Newcastle grabbed Donaldson early, and I completely get it, as moving to such a hitter-friendly park should see his already great numbers go up further. Iron Men gamble on Tulo’s health while Harper goes earlier than I was expecting, but if he hits in the middle of the Nats’ lineup and can stay healthy, maybe this is the year Bryce really puts it all together. Pineda was a guy I was considering for a late-round gamble, but second round? No way. Strasburg also gets drafted before Sale, Price, MadBum and Kluber.

Round 3
1. Jacoby Ellsbury(NYY – CF) Bits & Bytes
2. Nolan Arenado(Col – 3B) Jesmond Denn…
3. Madison Bumgarner(SF – SP) Batteries Es…
4. Todd Frazier (Cin – 1B,3B) Beck ‘Nams (GB)
5. Ryan Braun(Mil – OF) Weston-Super…
6. Buster Posey(SF – C,1B) The Cheddar …
7. Álex Rodríguez(NYY – 3B) Richie’s RBI’s
8. Corey Dickerson(Col – CF) Norwich No II
9. David Price(Det – SP) Mighty Slugs
10. Corey Kluber (Cle – SP) Iron Men
11. Chris Sale(CWS – SP) Orpington Is…
12. Brian Dozier(Min – 2B) NE Riverkings
13. Justin Upton(SD – OF) Newcastle Kn…
14. Freddie Freeman(Atl – 1B) Cheshunt Mal…

This is the round to grab an ace for my team, and after seeing MadBum, Price and Kluber go, I opt for Sale. I was slightly put off by his injury, but it looks as if he’ll only miss the first week or so. I like the Frazier pick here for Beck ‘Nams. Dozier and his 20/20 skills goes early, while Newcastle add more power with Upton. The A-Rod pick sticks out like a sore thumb here. A late-round gamble, sure, but there’s no way he should be drafted this early now.

1. Zack Greinke (LAD – SP) Cheshunt Mal…
2. Albert Pujols(LAA – 1B) Newcastle Kn…
3. Johnny Cueto(Cin – SP) NE Riverkings
4. David Ortiz(Bos – 1B) Orpington Is…
5. Starling Marte(Pit – CF) Iron Men
6. Jon Lester(ChC – SP) Mighty Slugs
7. George Springer (Hou – CF) Norwich No II
8. Joey Votto(Cin – 1B) Richie’s RBI’s
9. Jordan Zimmermann(Was – SP) The Cheddar …
10. Carlos González(Col – OF) Weston-Super…
11. Cole Hamels(Phi – SP) Beck ‘Nams (GB)
12. Prince Fielder(Tex – 1B) Batteries Es…
13. Aroldis Chapman(Cin – RP) Jesmond Denn…
14. José Reyes(Tor – SS) Bits & Bytes

Having got my ace in the last round, it’s time to add another bat. having taken Altuve, it’s all the more important to add some power here. Pujols is nabbed by Newcastle, so I go for Ortiz over CarGo and Springer. had I not already got Jones, I would have been tempted with Marte, who goes the very next pick. Votto should be good value for the RBIs here, while Chapman is the first closer to go.

1. Matt Kemp (SD – CF) Bits & Bytes
2. Carlos Santana(Cle – C,1B,3B) Jesmond Denn…
3. Billy Hamilton(Cin – CF) Batteries Es…
4. Jay Bruce(Cin – OF) Beck ‘Nams (GB)
5. Yoenis Céspedes(Det – OF) Weston-Super…
6. Ian Kinsler(Det – 2B) The Cheddar …
7. Doug Fister(Was – SP) Richie’s RBI’s
8. Craig Kimbrel (Atl – RP) Norwich No II
9. Mookie Betts(Bos – 2B,CF) Mighty Slugs
10. Víctor Martínez(Det – 1B) Iron Men
11. Adam Wainwright (StL – SP) Orpington Is…
12. Matt Harvey(NYM – SP) NE Riverkings
13. Jason Heyward(StL – OF) Newcastle Kn…
14. Evan Longoria(TB – 3B) Cheshunt Mal…

When my turn rolls round again, Wainwright is still available. I wasn’t expecting him to be there and can’t turn him down as my second starter. Teaming him and Sale should mean I can afford to load up on bats for the next few rounds too. Had V-Mart still been around, it would have been a tough decision, but Iron Men got there first. Betts is an interesting pick, as he has had a great spring but can he find enough playing time in a crowded Red Sox OF once Castillo and Victorino are fully healthy.

1. Greg Holland (KC – RP) Cheshunt Mal…
2. Charlie Blackmon(Col – CF) Newcastle Kn…
3. Christian Yelich(Mia – CF) NE Riverkings
4. Nelson Cruz(Sea – OF) Orpington Is…
5. Gerrit Cole(Pit – SP) Iron Men
6. James Shields(SD – SP) Mighty Slugs
7. Kris Bryant (ChC – 3B) Norwich No II
8. Neil Walker(Pit – 2B) Richie’s RBI’s
9. Kyle Seager(Sea – 3B) The Cheddar …
10. Dee Gordon(Mia – 2B) Weston-Super…
11. Leonys Martín(Tex – CF) Beck ‘Nams (GB)
12. Matt Holliday(StL – OF) Batteries Es…
13. Chris Davis(Bal – 1B,3B) Jesmond Denn…
14. Julio Teherán(Atl – SP) Bits & Bytes

I know Nelson Cruz won’t hit 40HR again this year, but he still should be good for 25ish in Seattle. I almost went for his team-mate Seager, who I rate very highly, but I know OF bats are scarce this year and there are other 3B I’d be OK with. I considered Holliday here before taking Cruz. Norwich go for Bryant, obviously hoping he either starts in the majors or won’t be in AAA for long. He could also be getting OF eligibility as well.

1. Alex Gordon (KC – OF) Bits & Bytes
2. Jeff Samardzija(CWS – SP) Jesmond Denn…

7. Mark Melancon(Pit – RP) Richie’s RBI’s
8. Kolten Wong(StL – 2B) Norwich No II
9. Tyson Ross(SD – SP) Mighty Slugs
10. Chris Carter (Hou – 1B,OF) Iron Men
11. Pablo Sandoval(Bos – 3B) Orpington Is…
12. Trevor Rosenthal(StL – RP) NE Riverkings
13. Cody Allen (Cle – RP) Newcastle Kn…
14. Jorge Soler(ChC – OF) Cheshunt Mal…

Round 7 sees a run on arms, including four closers, but I still want another bat. I still have holes on the left side of my infield, and opt to fill one of those with Sandoval, although I was tempted with Wright. More young talent is picked here, with Norwich and Cheshunt wanting to see what Wong and Soler can do in a full season.

1. Kole Calhoun(LAA – OF) Cheshunt Mal…
2. Gio González(Was – SP) Newcastle Kn…
3. Jacob deGrom(NYM – SP) NE Riverkings
4. Devin Mesoraco(Cin – C) Orpington Is…

12. Alex Cobb(TB – SP) Batteries Es…
13. Carlos Carrasco(Cle – SP,RP) Jesmond Denn…
14. Dustin Pedroia(Bos – 2B) Bits & Byt

It’s soon my turn again and Wright is still available. I strongly consider taking him as my UT but decide some power at C with Mesoraco is the better choice here. Wright goes the very next pick and two more closers go, but I’m content to hold off on relievers for a bit longer. I like the Calhoun pick here by Cheshunt – good numbers across the board and batting ahead of Trout and Pujols. I’m now looking ahead and worried about the hole at SS. I’d really like Alexei Ramirez, but will he make it to me? I have a long wait until my next pick…

12. Hunter Pence(SF – OF) NE Riverkings
13. Drew Storen (Was – RP) Newcastle Kn…
14. Phil Hughes(Min – SP) Cheshunt Mal…

Surprisingly, I get my wish as Alexei is available and i waste no time in grabbing him here. Having taken 7 hitters with my first 9 picks, now is the time to start thinking about a third starter. Phil Hughes or Ryu? Jesmond have swiped Richards, which could prove to be a wise move and Hughes is soon gone. Ryu it is then, hopefully.

Ryu is still around, so I snap him up in round 10, even though he may miss a couple of weeks at the start of the year. I thought about Tanaka, but his elbow scares me more than Ryu’s injury. I was tempted with Machado, Carpenter and Adams here for my UT, and if I hadn’t already got Sandoval I may well have gone for one of them here. Street and Perkins are grabbed. I was hoping for one of them in the next round.

Past the halfway point in the draft now, and I decide I can’t wait any longer for a closer. Rodney seems the best of the rest, although I thought about Papelbon. That empty third OF spot needs to be filled soon, ideally by Werth. Kendrick should drive in a few runs batting 5th for the Dodgers, so I like Iron men’s pick, while the improved Padre offense should see Cashner get the wins his ERA and WHIP deserved last year.

Werth is still around, but for for much longer when my turn arrives in round 12. I was annoyed to see Britton go as I had thought he would be a good second closer option for the next round, and Papelbon is snapped up too. Had Werth gone before my turn, I would have gone for Melky Cabrera, who is is drafted by the Chasers soon afterwards.

13. Danny Santana (Min – SS,CF) Newcastle Kn…
14. Homer Bailey(Cin – SP) Cheshunt Mal…

Nine arms taken in this round and after seeing starters snapped up I decide to take a gamble of Jose Fernandez. He’ll miss the start of the season, but if he can be anything like his old self in the second half, he could really pay dividends down the stretch. I had thought about a second closer here, but it seemed too early to reach down the rankings for a guy like Casilla, McGee or Clippard. Next round, hopefully. Not sure about the Mercer pick here, as he may lose playing time to Kang. Erick Aybar may have been the better choice.

13. Ken Giles (Phi – RP) Jesmond Denn…
14. Jake McGee(TB – RP) Bits & Bytes

Casilla is nabbed, and although I’m tempted by McGee, I decide to go for Clippard who will close while Doolittle is out. Ideally, I’d grab Doolittle in the next round to guarantee saves from Oakland. Martin had a great 2014 and may even hit more in Toronto’s hitter-friendly stadium, so Battteries Essential make a very worthwhile pick here. Jesmond plan ahead by taking Giles, who should take over as Philadelphia closer if Papelbon is dealt.

Disaster! After McGee goes at the end of round 14, Batteries Essential takes Doolittle. Curses! I can’t gamble on Clippard keeping the closing job all year, so I take Reed here who will get some saves, albeit with high ERA and WHIP, but I feel that’s the best I can do. Now to switch my attention to rounding out my rotation.

Choo, who had been hanging around at the top of the undrafted players list for a while, is finally taken by Cheshunt. I go back and forth with SP options and opt for Lohse over another SP who actually ends up going undrafted. Not exactly a sexy choice, but reasonable enough. I still need a UT, so either a hitter or another starter with my next pick. Arcia provides late-round power for the Slugs while Norwich take a flier on talented youngster Paxton.

13. Brett Lawrie(Oak – 2B,3B) Newcastle Kn…
14. Coco Crisp (Oak – CF) Cheshunt Mal…

A couple of young OF go in Souza and Castillo, and I think Ramos is very good value here for Iron Men. I take a punt on Holland having a fully healthy year and he did come back strongly at the end of last season. That leaves me with three picks remaining and I know I want a UT, a bench hitter and a set-up reliever for holds.

14. Rajai Davis(Det – CF) Bits & Bytes

I go back and forth between Ramirez, Khris Davis and another hitter who goes undrafted but take the safe route with A-Ram. His power numbers may have dropped, but he still should provide a decent average and 70-80 RBIs. Norwich and the RBIs back Gyorko and Cabrera to bounce back for sub-par years, while Beck ‘Nams grab 20+HR power in Teixeira and Batteries Essential nab Tomas, who has 3B and OF eligibility.

12. Rick Porcello(Bos – SP) NE Riverkings
13. Travis d’Arnaud (NYM – C) Newcastle Kn…
14. Joe Mauer(Min – 1B) Cheshunt Mal…

Some nice late picks here as Bit & Bytes grab Cuddyer, Jesmond get an underrated reliever in Smith and Beck ‘Nams grab a savvy veteran in Lackey. I take Janssen as my set-up reliever before Newcastle backs d’Arnaud to carry on from his strong finish last season.

The final round goes to show you really can wait for saves as Gregerson, who should close for Houston is taken with the 268th pick. Khris Davis and his power become my bench hitter as I fill my roster, while the Chasers take a very worthwhile punt on Carlos Martinez grabbing a rotation spot with the Cards and the Sox pick up 90+ runs and 30+ steals in Span.

Overall, I felt my draft went fairly well especialy considering my position towards the back of the queue. I would say my team might be the strongest offensive lineup I’ve ever drafted and I have taken more risks with the pitching staff, although I would have to be very unlucky for all of the injury doubts to fall apart at the same time. Missing out on Doolittle was a blow, and I’m not thrilled with Reed, but I felt I needed another saves option behind Rodney if Clippard is only closing temporarily.

Here are my quick thoughts on the other teams:

Bits & Bytes: #1 pick but not present at draft. Left with strong lineup, and decent but thin pitching staff. Needs to use offensive depth to trade for more pitching but at least has two closers.

Jesmond Dennings: Like the rotation depth but needs Giles to pick up saves soon. Average may suffer if Davis, Santana and Myers hit like last year but RBIs shouldn’t be a problem.

Batteries Essential: Pretty strong offensive lineup. Tomas and Castillo could be interesting trade chips or lead to other hitters being dealt to boost good but thin pitching staff.

Beck ‘Nams: What a rotation. Seriously, go and look at it. Stunning. Two closers too. Lineup may be weak at 2B and SS, especially if Baez doesn’t win playing time straight away but there are arms to dangle as trade bait.

Sox: Nicely balance lineup with power and speed but could maybe use one more big 30HR bat. Three starters and three closers all good, but need more arms.

Chasers: Another nicely balance lineup. Could maybe afford to trade one of Posey or Lucroy for more power at 1B, but should hit for very good average and RBIs. Pitching staff nicely rounded out with mix of veterans and promising youngsters.

RBIs: Feast or famine lineup. Lack of big power bat could be an issue, also missing a big RBI guy. Average may be a problem too. Rotation’s fairly good but bullpen needs another closer.

Norwich No II: OF could make or break this team, depending on what sort of year Harper has, whether Springer can hit for a higher average as well as power and whether Dickerson can repeat or improve on last year. If so, look out. Two top closers but rotation could use a legit ace.

Slugs: Power, power and more power. Lineup is well stocked and the rotation is impressive too with both Price and Lester .Needs Cecil to claim Toronto closer job, even better if Boxberger nabs some saves for the Rays and Soria replaces Nathan as Detroit closer.

Iron Men: Veteran infield should be good if Tulo stays healthy and OF has nice power and speed combo. Like the 1-2 punch of Kluber and Cole and if Tanaka stays healthy… bullpen short on saves though.

Riverkings: Really strong pitching staff with King Felix, Cueto, Harvey and two very good closers. OF power could be a problem until Pence returns, but intrigued to see how Joc Pederson does.

Newcastle: Loaded with power throughout lineup, which should come in handy when talking trade to boost pitching staff. Bullpen looks good, just needs an ace and maybe another mid-level starter for what should be a strong team.

Cheshunt: Tough picking last but did a nice job. Team is nicely balance offensively, although may need to sacrifice some bench hitters to boost the pitching staff. Fiver very good starters and two closers. Maybe needs another SP and some holds, but this should be relatively easy to do via trade or free agent pickups.
