Coverage of the BaseballGB Head-2-Head Fantasy League and other fantasy baseball features

Fantasy Baseball UK open again for 2015

We’re almost into single figures when counting down the days to MLB’s Opening Night and the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs getting the 2015 season underway on Sunday 5 April.

As the season approaches, many of us are getting involved with fantasy baseball drafts and preparing our own ‘teams’ for competition.

The traditional rotisserie and Head-to-Head leagues that you can find on places like Yahoo and ESPN are the standard port of call, but for 12 years now British baseball fans have also had the enticing option of competing in the Fantasy Baseball UK league.

When it first started, it really came to prominence as the port of call for Baseball on 5 viewers and presenters. Sadly that great late-night institution came to an end several years ago, but the Fantasy Baseball UK competition remains.

I somehow managed to finish ninth out of 3173 participants in my first year (2005, I believe) and my fantasy fortunes have never reached those heights again. Maybe I wouldn’t have put myself through years of fantasy heartbreak if I hadn’t fluked my way to such a promising result in that first FBUK foray, but I certainly don’t regret it.

If you’re looking for yet another fantasy league to add to your enjoyment of the 2015 season, FBUK is well worth a try.

BGB Fantasy League 2014: The Final

Baseball fans still have the playoffs to enjoy, but the fantasy season has come to a close. After 25 very competitive weeks, which team has been crowned BaseballGB Fantasy League champions? And who would benefit from Jordan Zimmermann’s no-hitter?

Team R HR RBI SB AVG OPS W SV K HLD ERA WHIP Score
Orpington Isotopes 25 7 20 5 .238 .738 6 1 53 0 1.35 0.83 8
London Bananas 16 2 11 4 .296 .751 1 3 51 0 2.60 0.90 3

Your 2014 champions are… the Orpington Isotopes.

Before anyone suggests so, this wasn’t a fix!

My team had squeaked through the previous playoff rounds 6-5 and 5-5 (with a tiebreak win) but managed to defeat the Bananas 8-3. The offense took four categories, with Duda belting a pair of homers and driving in six, Frazier going deep twice and scoring six while Utley and Pollock swiped two bases each. But the real star of the show was Jordan Zimmermann, who hurled a final-day no-hitter to help the pitching staff take wins, strikeouts, ERA and WHIP. Funnily enough, I have a history with last-day no-nos, if you will allow me to digress.

FINAL DAY FORTUNE

As well as my involvement in the BaseballGB league, I also played in a 16-team dynasty league which included a free agent auction with multi-year contracts and a minor league draft. After spending hours each year reading up about prospects and trying to figure out the best way to complete my 25-man roster, I had never finished higher than the second place, which i somehow managed in my first year, 2007. Since then I had come no closer to the title.

Last year, I was towards the top of the standings, but it was incredibly close between my team and Chris (manager of our Northfleet Knights). Desperate for help on the final day, I decided to add a pitcher. I needed strikeouts and had to hope that he could also help me in ERA and WHIP. His strikeout numbers weren’t anything special, but he would be facing a team which had already made the playoffs and would probably be resting its stars. The player I added was Henderson Alvarez, who duly threw a no-no against the Tigers, sealing the championship for my team. If this happens again next season, I will run out of words to explain it!

BACK TO THE MATCHUP

The Bananas took average and OPS comfortably thanks to Span, Werth, Escobar and Marte while Reed, Janssen and K-Rod had a save each. Hamels, Hammel and Lohse put up great ERA and WHIP numbers which probably would have led to category wins in most other matchups. I tip my cap to Taxi Driver for a great season. There’s always next year.

There you have it. It’s been a fantastic year for the BaseballGB league, with a large number of managers producing our most competitive season yet. I hope you have enjoyed it.

Thanks for being a part of it, and I Iook forward to seeing you in the draft room next year when you all try to knock me down a peg or two. Thanks as always to Matt for his help and don’t forget to keep supporting the BaseballGB site.

The top seeds have also fallen, as my Isotopes squeezed into the final by the narrowest of margins. The contest finished level at 5-5, but the Butchers fell victim to the tiebreaker of my 6-5 win against them in the regular season. My team had the better of the offense thanks to a monster week from Puig, who came to life with 12 runs, two homers, two steals and six RBIs, while Pearce homered three times and joined Puig and Hanley in batting over .400 for the week. On the mound, six different pitchers picked up wins.

The Butchers had three homers and nine RBIs from Trumbo, Avisial Garcia went deep twice and Encarnacion drove in six. Worley, Greene and Odorizzi helped take ERA and WHIP while Stroman struck out 10, Clippard had three holds and Melancon collected two saves. Batteries essential paid the price for not replacing the suspended Davis or the injured Castro, but Storen had four saves and Alex Wood helped take ERA.

Gregerson led the staff with eight strikeouts and picked up a win and a hold while Hamels and Lynn helped take ERA and WHIP. Stroman’s scoreless start, combined with Price and Paxton’s efforts helped take ERA and WHIP, while Vargas struck out 14. Melancon and Clippard took care of saves and holds while Yelich swiped two bases. The offense still took homers, RBIs and steals, mainly thanks to Brantley and Walker. Wood, Chen, Garza and Peralta helped take ERA and Storen had three saves.

The Butchers had already booked their playoff place, but they showed no sign of taking their foot off the gas with an 11-1 thumping of the Slugs. Asdrubal Cabrera, Yelich and Wong led an offensive sweep while Vargas was the pick of the starting pitchers. Two other Royals, Holland and Davis (two holds) joined Kimbrel in collecting two saves each. The Slugs actually performed pretty well across the board and will feel hard done buy to only take strikeouts thanks to McHugh. d’Arnaud had a big week with the bat.

We begin with the biggest winners of the week, as the Slugs hammered the Sox 11-1. Admittedly this was helped with a sweep of the pitching categories as the Sox failed to meet the 20-inning minimum requirement, but the Slugs were still on course for a healthy win regardless. Donaldson, Carpenter and JD Martinez were the top hitters while Gordon swiped five bases. McHugh won both his starts, Arrieta struck out 13 and Betances had a win and a hold. It was a great week for Norwich, who shot up the standings with their 9-2 score against the Chasers. Fiers, Britton and Cobb helped the pitchers take every category bar holds, while Justin Upton, Seager and Freeman had big weeks with the bat. Joe Smith picked up four holds for the Chasers, while Ortiz and Miguel Cabrera helped take average.

I have to tip my cap to the RBIs, who picked up a well-deserved 9-2 win against my Isotopes. LaRoche, Cano and Blackmon led the offense to five out of six categories, falling one RBI short of a sweep. Young and a pair of wins and led the staff in ERA and strikeouts while Will Smith took care of holds. Puig and Utley forced a tie in RBIs, Archer struck out 12 and Soriano had three saves.

The Riverkings got the better of the Bananas 7-4. Kimbrel and Holland each had three saves while Clippard had a busy week, collecting four holds. Another matchup, another 6-5. This time it was Jesmond getting the better of Batteries Essential. Perkins and O’Day took care of saves and holds respectively, while Fister’s stingy week was a big factor in claiming ERA and WHIP. Dickerson had a big week, homering three times, scoring six runs and knocking in 11. Billy Hamilton, Stanton and Starlin Castro helped Batteries Essential claim steals, average and OPS, while Koeher led the staff with two wins and 12 strikeouts.

As you can see, 6-5 was a very popular score this week, showing just how competitive this league is. Iron Men’s pitchers took five categories thanks to Smyly, Wheeler, Gausman and Strasburg and the relief duo of Fien and Rodney. Adam Jones led the team with five RBIs. Chris Carter (four homers, nine RBIs) had a monster week for the Angels, while Morales also hit well. The Riverkings hardly had a vintage week of pitching but it was good enough to defeat a decimated Sox team. Ventura picked up the lone win, while Gio Gonzalez had 14 strikeouts. Offensively, Javier Baez arrived with a bang, belting two homers. The Sox saw Alex Gordon hit three homers and score six times, while Altuve had three steals. With just three pitchers taking the mound, the Sox were able to make it over the 20 inning minimum limit. We’ve done well so far to avoid any pitching forfeits, but i fear we may see one next week if the Sox don’t use the DL and add reinforcements.

Cobb, Porcello and Santana helped Norwich’s pitchers take five categories in a matchup which featured excellent pitching from both sides. Chapman and Britton had three saves each and Polanco stole two bases. Josh Harrison had a monster week for Jesmond, belting four homers and scoring 10 runs. Trout and Andrus helped take average and OPS and Broxton had three holds.

Trade deadline

While there was plenty of trade activity between MLB clubs, we’ll see how it impacts on our league. Lester, Lackey and Price should benefit from playing on stronger teams, while maybe a move to Fenway will help Allen Craig. Drew Smyly and Austin Jackson may see their numbers affected by moving to weaker teams and, in Jackson’s case, a pitcher-friendly ballpark.
