British Baseball Beat: Another first for Herts

bbbHlsqHerts Baseball Club will be notching up another first this evening.  They will become the first British baseball team to start their own online TV channel.

The Herts Baseball Channel launches at 20.00 BST today with live coverage of the organization’s 2010 Hunlock Series draft.

The Hunlock Series is the club’s end-of-season event where players from all of their teams are drafted for an intra-club competition.  Two years ago, an audio version of the draft was broadcast online and now they are moving up to a TV stream instead.

The idea that people will be able to listen to live broadcasts of British baseball club drafts is exciting enough, but it’s clear that this is only the beginning of Herts’ plans, as Club president Aspi Dimitrov explains:

“We now have the ability to televise live or on-demand talk shows, fan phone-ins, player interviews, game highlights, pre-game build up and post-game analysis, and this will have a very positive effect on all Herts Baseball operations.’ He added: ‘We can even stream live games from our own ballpark and this can be done by adopting the same methods used by ESPN and FOX when they show live MLB games.  For example, we can televise a Herts Falcons game live with 10 or more different cameras located in different parts of the ballpark and the various video feeds can be mixed to deliver coverage of the highest quality”

You certainly cannot fault Herts for a lack of ambition.

For the foreseeable future, nothing will beat the traditional methods of local promotion for making people aware of baseball in this country and whether there is a team nearby.  However, the Internet does open up a whole world of opportunities that British baseball can take advantage of.

Even a simple club website and Facebook entry can be helpful in recruiting new players.  Interactive features like the recent live scoring of the National Baseball Championships then serve a double purpose, firstly in providing another way for current fans to take an active interest in the domestic game regardless of their location, and secondly in giving out a professional, well-organized image to newcomers or potential new recruits.

The idea of streaming British baseball games live online might seem a bit fanciful, and I’m sure it is likely to be some way off in practice, but it shows what is possible.  There’s certainly nothing wrong in setting high goals and the possibility of action from a future NBC being streamed live online is surely something to get behind.

If you know of any other innovative ideas being taken forward in British baseball, please let us know.

This week’s early MLB games: St. Louis x3 and King Felix

There are only seven MLB games scheduled to start before midnight UK time this working week; however they are nicely spread out so Tuesday is the only British evening on which there is no MLB action to follow live.

St. Louis Cardinals fans are treated to three games involving their team this week, starting tonight with Chris Carpenter taking on the Florida Marlins.  Jeff Suppan is scheduled to face the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday before Adam Wainwright takes the mound in a Friday day-game at Wrigley Field against the Chicago Cubs.

Outside of those St. Louis games, the highlight of the week comes on Thursday as King Felix Hernandez is on course to pitch against the Toronto Blue Jays at the Rogers Centre.  He took a no-hitter into the eighth inning last time out against the Texas Rangers and it’s only his average win-loss record of 12-11, a consequence of the disappointing Mariners team around him rather than Hernandez’s own efforts, that is stopping him from being the frontrunner for the AL Cy Young award.

All times are in BST.

Monday 20 September

20.10. St. Louis at Florida (Chris Carpenter – Chris Volstad)

Tuesday 21 September

No early games

Wednesday 22 September

18.10. Cleveland at Minnesota (Carlos Carrasco – Nick Blackburn)

17.37. Seattle at Toronto (Felix Hernandez – Shawn Hill)
21.35. Houston at Washington (Nelson Figueroa – Ross Detwiler)

Weekly Hit Ground Ball: Don’t wake up

WhgbHlSqThe Colorado Rockies’ recent run ensured that their game against the Los Angeles Dodgers would make for entertaining viewing on Saturday evening.  Watching on MLB.TV offered the additional benefit of listening to the legendary broadcaster Vin Scully calling the action and, in particular, commenting on the recent form of the Rockies’ shortstop Troy Tulowitzki.

Scully has been calling Dodgers games for 61 years and counting and there’s no one better able to put historic feats or memorable performances into perspective.  There was a sense of wonder in Scully’s voice as he relayed the numbers that Tulowitzki had put up over the preceding fourteen games as he arrived in the batter’s box in the first inning.  Scully had just finished stating the stats when the Dodgers’ starting pitcher John Ely threw a change-up down the middle of the plate to Tulowitzki.

“Look out, he’s hit another one!”, exclaimed Scully.

So he had, and he would do so again in the fifth inning.  The two blasts made it fourteen home runs in fifteen games prior to Sunday, a sequence that began on 3 September against the San Diego Padres.  Tulowitzki had hit twelve home runs in the 2010 season before that point, nine of which came before spending five weeks on the disabled list between mid-June and the end of July.  Continue reading

Sunday’s early MLB games: Braves-Mets on 5 Live

Mlb5XtraHlEarly Sunday evening baseball returns to BBC 5 Live Sports Extra today.  The Atlanta Braves attempt to complete a three-game series sweep over the New York Mets at Citi Field, with the BBC’s coverage beginning at 18.00 and the game scheduled to start ten minutes later.

The Braves-Mets game will be followed on 5 Live Sports Extra by more sporting action from New York, (well, more specifically from New Jersey) as the New England Patriots take on the New York Jets in the second week of the NFL.

With plenty of other exciting MLB and NFL games taking place as well, it promises to be a great evening for North American sports fans in the UK.  Continue reading

Saturday’s early MLB games: Division races continue

CovHlSqThere are five games beginning before midnight UK time today.

The A’s and Twins start us off at 18.10 before four games get underway at 21.10.  They include the Twins’ AL Central rivals and battles involving teams from each division in the National League.

All times are in BST.

18.10. Oakland at Minnesota (Dallas Braden – Kevin Slowey)

The A’s beat the Twins 3-1 yesterday, although the Tigers’ win over the White Sox meant that Minnesota maintained their nine game lead in the AL Central.  Braden pitched superbly against the Rangers back on 28 August (a complete game shutout) to level his win-loss record at 9-9 but has suffered three straight losses since then, never making it through six complete innings.  He’ll be looking for a better performance today.  As for Slowey, he’s pitched well, if not going deep into games, in his two starts since coming off the DL.

21.10. Detroit at Chicago White Sox (Justin Verlander – Lucas Harrell)

The always combative Ozzie Guillen will not be prepared to concede the Central to the Twins just yet, but the White Sox’s recent poor form has all but ruled them out of making the postseason.  Chicago has won only two of their last ten games and  their current losing streak was extended to four games last night after Max Scherzer tied them up in knots as the Tigers prevailed 9-2.  Today’s pitching match-up heavily favours Detroit as well.  Harrell makes the start in place of the injured Freddy Garcia.

21.10. Colorado at LA Dodgers (Jhoulys Chacin – John Ely)

Never rule out the Rockies.  They’re on yet another September surge and are now just 1.5 games behind the NL West-leading San Francisco Giants after winning the series-opener against the Dodgers yesterday.  The Rockies host the Giants for three games over 24-26 September, so if they can take some more games from the Dodgers and the D-Backs in the run-up to that series, they could put themselves in pole position: a real turnaround from only a couple of weeks ago.

Chacin has been a useful addition to the Rockies’ rotation, although he lasted only four innings against the D-Backs last time out.  Ely filled in for Vicente Padilla against the Astros last Saturday and is expected to pitch again today.  This game is presumably one of the FOX offerings, so expect plenty of chatter about Don Mattingly’s transition to being the Dodgers’ manager in 2011 and speculation about Joe Torre’s plans for next year.

21.10. Atlanta at NY Mets (Tim Hudson – Dillon Gee)

With the Phillies riding a five-game winning streak, the Braves are now three games behind in the NL East and have just a 1.5 game lead over San Diego in the Wild Card race.  Time to start winning some games.  Tim Hudson has had a terrific season for the Braves and has become another example of a pitcher returning strongly after Tommy John surgery.  The Mets are having another disappointing season and, frankly, there doesn’t appear to be much fight left in them.  However, a young starter like Gee has every reason to give his all and to make a good impression.  He’s given up just one run in his two starts, although he has walked seven batters over those thirteen innings.

21.10. San Diego at St. Louis (Chris Young – Jeff Suppan)

Yesterday’s game couldn’t have gone much worse for the Padres.  Mat Latos was chased by the Cards after just 1.1 innings having given up eight earned runs.  Not only did that put them in a hole that they couldn’t recover from, they lost 14-4, a short start was the last thing the Padres needed as Chris Young is not expected to work very deep into today’s game.  He has made only one Major League start this season, back on 6 April, and has been working his way back from a shoulder injury.  The Cardinals trail the Reds by six games in the NL Central and might still feel they have an outside chance of causing an upset and winning the division at the last.  Needless to say, both teams will be desperate to win this one to keep their postseason hopes alive.

All the above games can be followed via various resources on MLB.com (Gameday, At Bat with Gameday Audio and MLB.tv).  A complete schedule of MLB games can be found on MLB.com

Web Pick of the Week: Athletics After Dark

Web-PickThis week’s web pick is a ‘homer’ selection for me as it is a website about the Oakland A’s.

Athletics After Dark is run by A’s journalist and fan Dale Tafoya.  Dale has been featured at BaseballGB before as he wrote an excellent book about Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire, Bash Brothers, and was kind enough to participate in an author interview to go alongside my review of the book back in July 2008.

The site was launched in August and it’s defining characteristic so far has been the growing series of unique podcast interviews with people related to the A’s.

Most recently, Dale interviewed Mychael Urban, currently a member of the CSN Bay Area crew and previously the A’s beat writer on MLB.com, about the A’s ‘Big Three’ starters from the early 2000s: Tim Hudson, Mark Mulder and Barry Zito.  Previous interview subjects have ranged from the A’s Travelling Secretary Mickey Morabito, to an expert on the A’s minor league prospects (Melissa Lockard of Scout.com) and the actor Art Ortiz who will play Eric Chavez in the upcoming movie of Moneyball.

While he didn’t write the book (in contrast to what some people still seem to believe), the central character in Moneyball was, of course, the A’s General Manager Billy Beane.  He was the subject of the first podcast and it’s definitely worth listening to that one all the way through as near the end Dale asks Billy a question posed by a certain baseball writer from Great Britain!

A Brief British Baseball Beat

bbbHlsqWith the National Baseball Championships settled more than a week ago, there’s not a great deal of news to report from the British Baseball scene.

In fact, last week’s column will probably be the last weekly full-length edition for 2010, but I’m sure I’ll do a round-up column or two later in the year, while adding in shorter posts to cover any news about offseason changes and 2011 plans.

Youth Baseball Championships

The main newsworthy event of the last seven days has been the youth championship qualifiers that were played over the 11-12 September weekend.

As reported on the BBF website, London Mets Bronco and Herts All Stars qualified in the Bronco section, while Cobham Cougars and London Mets Pony made it through to the Pony section.  Full details of the games involving the Herts All Star team can be found on the Herts Baseball website.

Those four teams will compete alongside Cartmel Valley, Manchester Saints, Polecats Bronco and Polecats Pony in the National Youth Baseball Championships at the John Mills Ballpark in Halton ballpark this coming weekend.  The BBF will be using the GameChanger live scoring service, so the action can be followed as it happens or you can read all the stats once the games have been completed.

Good luck to all involved.

Hit the Pitch

Reading about the efforts to get youngsters playing baseball has reminded me to promote the developing ‘Hit the Pitch’ website produced by BaseballSoftballUK.

The ‘Hit the Pitch’ programme is designed to offer an accessible and easy way to introduce people to baseball and softball:

“At the core of this project are easy to access, flexible pick-up sessions where new participants and those eager to get back into the game can pitch up and start playing – no strings attached.Although there are opportunities to play in clubs and leagues across the country, Hit the Pitch programmes have been set up to be flexible and easy to access. There are no club committees, no heavy membership fees and no long trips to away games, ideal for you and a group of friends or colleagues eager to have fun, get fit and try something new”.

The website as a whole will be a hub for the baseball/softball community and provide resources and information for anyone who wants to get involved in either sport.

BBB Update

One of my pre-Xmas offseason projects is to collect all this year’s BBB columns together in one volume, most likely a pdf (thanks to Joe for the idea).  I’ll be adding in some of the comments that many of you kindly contributed, where they gave updates and a bit more information about the topics covered in each column.  Hopefully I’ll be able to include some photos and additional commentary along the way as well.

It should make for quite a neat record of the 2010 season and I’ll post more details about it later in the year.
