BGB Fantasy League 2015: Week 20

One team has confirmed their place in the 2015 BaseballGB playoffs, while the race for the remaining places is really heating up. And which manager benefited from the latest no-hitter?

We start with the week’s biggest winners, as Norwich boosted their playoff hopes with a 10-2 win against Jesmond. A pitching sweep saw six different players collect wins, including Syndergaard, who led the staff with 12 strikeouts. Jansen had three saves and Siegrist a pair of holds. Wood and Fiers helped take ERAS and WHIP. Lindor scored five runs, stole three bases and teamed with Beltran to take average and OPS. The Knights are another step closer to the playoffs after defeating the Chasers 6-4. The clear MVP was Encarnacion, who slugged six homers and drove in a ridiculous 17, slugging over 1.700. Upton hit just the four homers. Street had two saves and Estrada and Kennedy helped take ERA and WHIP. Lucroy and Headley gave the Chasers the edge in runs, while the same two batters joined Melky Cabrera in posting strong averages. Quintana struck out 14 and Martinez and Zimmermann each had wins.

Iron Men had multi-homer weeks from Ramos, Sano and JD Martinez, with the latter two driving in six runs each. It was an excellent week for the pitching staff, as Kluber, Wacha, Keuchel and Tanaka helped take ERA and WHIP, while Watson had three holds. Iron Men do have the consolation of being the first team to book a playoff place. Congratulations!

Finally, Bits & Bytes caused an upset by defeating the Lollygaggers 6-5. In a matchup light on offense, Carpenter and Belt led a sweep for Bits & Bytes while four different starters picked up wins. Becknam dominated the rest of the pitching stats, as Kershaw struck out 14, Benoit and Axford took care of holds and saves and Jake Arrietta’s no-hitter put the icing on the cake of some good ERA and WHIP stats.

With just two weeks of the regular season left, any of the top 12 could still make it to the playoffs. The week 21 matchups are as follows:

MLB this Week: Heading into September

CovMLBUK2014We’re heading into the final month of the 2015 regular season and whilst this is always a great time, it seems particularly exciting this year.

Three of the current division leaders haven’t been to the playoffs for years. The NL East-leading New York Mets last played in the postseason in 2006 in a season that ended in a heartbreaking 4-3 NLCS loss to the St Louis Cardinals, whilst the AL West-leading Houston Astros last got there in 2005 when they had a similarly devastating end through being swept 4-0 in the World Series by the Chicago White Sox.

As for the AL East-leading Toronto Blue Jays, their last taste of the postseason couldn’t have been sweeter with back-to-back World Series wins in 1992 and 1993, but it’s been a long time since those two triumphs.

In comparison the Texas Rangers’ current two-year playoff drought looks inconsequential; however their Wild Card run is no less remarkable as hopes were not high heading into 2015 and they’ve seemingly come from nowhere to get in the mix.

The Minnesota Twins were even more unfancied and had many people tipping them for last place again in the AL Central, but they are just 1.5 games behind the Rangers for the second Wild Card as of today.

And arguably the biggest story is the emergence of the Chicago Cubs. We all knew that they would be contending again soon, yet most felt that 2015 was a season or two too early. The Cubs have ignored that and after Jake Arrieta’s no-hitter last night against the LA Dodgers, you have to wonder if the Curse of the Billy Goat is losing its power.

You can see the Cubs in action twice this working week at a convenient time for us in the UK. The pre-midnight starts are as follows, with all times stated in BST.

BGB Fantasy League 2015 Week Nineteen

With less than a month to go until the fantasy playoffs, two teams are tied at the top and the race for the final playoff place is heating up. Then there’s the matter of finding out which manager benefited from the latest no-hitter…

Iron Men go top of the standings after their 10-1 win against the Maltsters. An offensive sweep saw Sano hit four homers, score eight times and drive in nine, while a pair of Pirates, Kang (3 HR, 6 RBI) and Marte (8 R, 2 HR, 3 SB) also had big weeks. Two more Pirates had big weeks for the pitching staff as Cole racked up 13 strikeouts and Watson collected three holds. Wacha, Rodon and Keuchel helped take ERA and WHIP. The Maltsters salvaged saves thanks to two each from Holland, Casilla and Ramos. Calhoun had a two-homer week.

Chris saw his batters take five out of six categories as Donaldson (9 R, 3 HR, 13 RBI, .524) had another monster week, as did fellow Jay Encarnacion (8 R, 3 HR, 9 RBI, .450). CarGo also hit three homers. Gregerson had two wins and a save while Salazar helped take ERA and WHIP. Price had nine strikeouts for the Slugs, while Soria notched two holds. Five different players stole a base and Piscotty hit three homers.

Norwich defeated the Chasers 9-3 in another matchup with plenty of power. Bryant (8 R, 3 HR, 8 RBI, .391) was the pick of the hitters, while Schwarber also went deep three times. Siegrist had two wins and Kimbrel and Rondon had two saves each, but the star pitcher was Fiers, who threw a no-hitter, helping take ERA and WHIP in the process. Escobar helped the Chasers take steals, while Zimmermann struck out 13 and Herrera had the lone hold.

There wasn’t much power on display, but Brantley and Andrus went deep and Revere (.571) and Miggy (.542) helped take average and OPS. Tazawa had two saves and Iglesias and Chavez helped take ERA and WHIP. Kershaw struck out 17 for Becknam, while Hammel, Hamels and Kazmir all reached double-digits. The RBIs came up big with an 8-4 win against the Sox. The pitchers took five categories as Weaver and Severino picked up wins and helped take ERA and Volquez struck out 12. Melancon and Tolleson each had a win and two saves. Solarte hit three homers, while McCann, Votto, A-Rod and Fowler went deep twice. My Isotopes are scrapping to stay in the playoff race, defeating Bits & Bytes 7-4. Yadier Molina homered twice and knocked in six, while Cruz scored five runs and Altuve batted .433. Sale  struck out 14 and Clippard and Madson had a hold each. Ellsbury gave Bits & Bytes the edge in steals, while Strasburg picked up a win and teamed with Teheran, McHugh and Ventura in posting impressive team ERA and WHIP stats.

Finally, Jesmond are second in the standings – but level with Iron men on percentage points – after their narrow 6-5 win against the Riverkings. The offense fell a homer shy of a sweep, as Pollock scored eight runs, stole four bases and batted .483, while Santana homered three times and Arenado drove in six. Archer’s gem made the difference in WHIP. Khris Davis hit four homers from the Riverkings, while deGrom and Gallardo each picked up wins and helped take ERA. McCullers struck out eight while Rosenthal and Smith had a pair of saves and holds respectively.

STRETCH DRIVE

There are just three weeks left of the regular fantasy season, and it is still possible that any of the top 12 could sneak into that last playoff place. Those managers who play hard in the final few weeks could still get their rewards, so here’s hoping for some good battles in the final weeks.

The week 20 matchups are as follows

Iron Men (1st) v Slugs (4th)

Jesmond (2nd) v Norwich (9th)

Knights (3rd) v Chasers (11th)

MLB this Week: Playoff contenders in early action

CovMLBUK2014There are eight pre-midnight MLB games this working week and all but one contains a play-off contender.

Sadly for this A’s fan, we’re in the exception and having to face Felix Hernandez as well.

We start off with a bit of treat on Monday. The Cubs always feature prominently in the ‘early’ game lists due to the large number of day-games they play at Wrigley Field. Over the past few seasons the home team generally hasn’t had much to play for, but things are very different in 2015.

The north-siders are firmly in the Wild Card race and so games at the Friendly Confines are back to being played in front of a loud and enthusiastic crowd. With reigning AL Cy Young winner Corey Kluber in town with the Cleveland Indians facing off against Jon Lester, this should be a great way to start the week.

Wednesday brings a potential playoff match-up in the form of the Houston Astros taking on the New York Yankees. This would be Mike Fiers’ scheduled rotation slot, although it’s possible he may get skipped after throwing 134 pitches in his no-hitter against the Dodgers on Friday.

Then on Thursday we have a very exciting group of early games, starting off with a Zack Greinke start for the Dodgers, passing through American League match-ups including Toronto at the surprisingly Wild-Card chasing Texas, Baltimore taking on the Royals in Kansas City and the Cubs playing at AT&T against the Giants.

All times are in BST.

19.10. Baltimore at Kansas City (Tillman – Ventura)

BGB Fantasy League 2015 Week Eighteen

With just four weeks of the regular fantasy season left, the race for the playoffs is hotting up. Which teams are still in the hunt for a shot at winning it all? And who benefited from Iwakuma’s no-hitter?

Team R HR RBI SB AVG OPS W SV K HLD ERA WHIP Score

There is a new leader in the BaseballGB Fantasy League. Read on to find out which team has surged to the top in Week 17.

We begin with the biggest winners of the week, as Jesmond thrashed my Isotopes 10-1, going top of the standings in the process. It was a monster offensive week for Jesmond, who took a sweep thanks to seven runs and eight RBIs each from McCutchen (.563, 2 HR) and Davis (3 HR). On the mound, Archer struck out 17, Carrasco helped take ERA and WHIP and Osuna had three saves. My team salvaged wins thanks to Anderson. Offensively, my team put up decent numbers which would have led to a few more category wins in most other weeks, but that’s head-to-head play for you. Cruz hit four homers and Ortiz belted three.

A great result for Norwich saw them defeat Becknam 9-3 thanks to another offensive sweep. The decision to pick up Kyle Schwarber is really paying off for Norwich, as he hit two homers, scored eight and knocked in eight. Abreu hit three homers and Granderson and Grichuk went deep twice. Rondon and Jansen had two saves each while Siegrist had a pair of holds. Iwakuma and Odorizzi helped claim WHIP. Kluber was the pick of the pitchers with a win, a near no-no and 14 strikeouts, while Watson had two holds. If it wasn’t for Jim Johnson’s meltdown on Sunday, they would have won ERA and WHIP too. Bits & Bytes had four homers from Carpenter and three from Belt while McGee notched a win, a hold and a save.

Here come the Knights. Surging up the standings like the Mets, Chris defeated the RBIs 8-4. In a matchup full of monster offensive numbers, the Knights completed a sweep thanks to Donaldson (9 R, 5 HR, 8 RBI), CarGo (5 R, 4 HR, 9 RBI) and Encarnacion (6 R, 2 HR, 8 RBI). The bullpen had three wins, including one from Storen who also had a hold. Karns struck out 15 for the RBIs, while Ziegler, Tolleson and Melancon each had two saves. Hitting 13 homers, including three from Crawford, would usually be good enough to win that category, but not this time.

MLB this Week: 10 to choose from

CovMLBUK2014We’ve got ten early MLB games this working week after a slow start to the pre-midnight schedule on Monday and Tuesday.

The games include some of the playoff contenders looking to add wins to their collections.

The Houston Astros and San Francisco Giants are playing a short two-game interleague series this week, which seems strange to type after the Astros were a National League team for so long.

Both teams will be looking for a return to better form. Houston will go into the series having lost six of their previous seven games, including their last three against the A’s, whilst the Giants are reeling from being swept in a four-game series by the Cubs.

Thursday brings games including the Mets, Blue Jays and Cubs, whilst on Friday we have the first game from the latest Windy City series.

Elsewhere Jose Fernandez was scheduled to start on Wednesday against Boston, but a right biceps strain will see him back on the Disabled List instead.

National League race

Heading into Sunday, the Washington Nationals are 4 games behind for the second Wild Card. It would be a shock if they missed the playoffs altogether based on the lofty preseason predictions that surrounded the team, but it’s certainly not out of the question.

Realistically there are seven teams competing for five playoff spots in the National League if we cut things off at the Nationals, which seems fair with the Arizona Diamondbacks being eight games out of the Wild Card and not obviously possessing a roster that could go on an incredible run.

The St Louis Cardinals, LA Dodgers, San Francisco Giants and Washington Nationals were all expected to be in the mix and, given their form over the past couple of seasons, the same could be said for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

It’s the New York Mets and Chicago Cubs who are the interesting additions. Both are teams who, more often than not, should be in the playoff hunt considering the resources they have available.

We all know that the Mets have been run as a lower-middle revenue team in recent seasons due to issues with the owners; however the offense is starting to show signs of life to go alongside their enviable crop of young pitchers. Mets fans have been waiting a while for a season like this and you get the sense that they are a team that could ride on a wave the rest of the way.

As for the Cubs, their recent struggles in the standings have been part of a plan to rebuild and it looks like that plan is coming together brilliantly. 2015 seemed like being a year too early for this group and that may still prove to be the case, yet if they can stick in there you never know what type of run they could put together down the stretch.

It’s been great watching lower-revenue teams like the Pirates and Kansas City Royals turn their fortunes around recently; however there’s no doubt that for baseball as a whole it’s a hugely positive development to see two big market teams in the Cubs and Mets actually starting to contend again.

It seems 8-4 was a popular score with the top three, as Iron Men defeated Batteries Essential by the same margin. Kang had a three-homer week, while Kendrick and JD Martinez (who drove in nine) each went deep twice and helped take OPS by a hair. The pitchers won all categories except saves, with Keuchel, Wacha and Heston picking up wins. Watson had two holds and Cole struck out eight. Machado scored seven runs for Batteries essential, while Billy Hamilton swiped five bases. Kipnis batted .400 before his injury, while Papelbon and Romo each had a save.

Norwich put a stop to the mini revival from the Isotopes, defeating my team 7-4. Abreu (seven runs, 10 RBIs) made the difference in those categories, while the pitchers carried the load with five out of six categories. Syndergaard won twice and struck out 18, joining new Dodger Wood in taking ERA and WHIP. Kimbrel and Jansen had two saves each. Nelson Cruz hit four homers for the isotopes, Alexei Ramirez went deep three times and Ethier helped take OPS with his two-homer Sunday. Altuve had the lone steal.

TRADE DEADLINE REMINDER

The deadline for making trades in the league is August 16, so don’t be afraid to have a look at other team’s rosters and make a few trade offers, particularly if you have holes to fill and a surplus in another area to deal from.
