MLB This Week: Memorial Day and More

Monday is a holiday on both sides of the Atlantic and that means our Bank Holiday weekend is brought to a close by a bonanza of Memorial Day day-games.

There are some enticing match-ups within them, not least the start of the Astros-Yankees series and the Cardinals-Brewers series. The former is on BT Sport/ESPN and is available for all to watch for free on MLB.com

The Mets and Braves have a double-header on Monday and the opener should see Jacob deGrom on the mound, although likely won’t see the Ronald Acuna in the batter’s box after he came out of the Braves’ game yesterday with a worrisome knee injury.

Later in the week, BT Sport will be broadcasting the Blue Jays-Red Sox came on Wednesday and the Rays-A’s game on Thursday, whilst the Facebook exclusive game on Wednesday is Cardinals-Brewers.

The price of MLB.TV annual subscription has been reduced for the first time this season (it’s always promoted as a discount, but essentially it means you’re paying less because it covers less of the season) so is now available for $70, which works out at approximately £84 when adding on VAT.

All times are in BST.

BGB Fantasy League 2018 Week 7

Week seven of the BaseballGB Fantasy League saw the first trade of the season. And which manager would suffer from Robinson Cano’s suspension?

Colome had four saves, Devenski notched a pair of holds and Maeda, Morton and Greinke helped to take ERA and WHIP. Davis, Castillo and Castellanos gave Norwich the edge in average, while Corbin struck out 14, one ahead of Flaherty.

Trade

We have had our first trade of the season as Norwich sent Jed Lowrie to the Sox in exchange for Familia. The return of Schoop from injury as the suspension of Osuna meant Norwich had depth at 2B and a need at RP so a deal was struck. The Sox are gambling that Vizcaino and Soria will provide enough saves and Lowrie provides an upgrade on the struggling Kinsler, although they still lack a SS with Andrus hurt.

The week 8 matchups are as follows:

Riverkings (1st) v Sox (11th)

Norwich (2nd) v Batteries Essential (12th)

RBIs (3rd) v Isotopes (5th)

A&E Dept (4th) v Knights (7th)

Maltsters (6th) v Slugs (8th)

Bombers (9th) v Chasers (10th)

MLB This Week: Two BT Sport Games on Thursday

After drawing blanks on Monday and Tuesday, we’ve got a good selection of MLB day-games to enjoy during the British evening on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Wednesday’s games include one from the series between the current leaders of the NL Central and NL West, as the Arizona Diamondbacks are in Miwaukee playing the Brewers.

The Houston Astros are in interleague play against the San Francisco Giants and Wednesday’s game should see an excellent pitching match-up with Jeff Samardzija and Justin Verlander the probable pitchers.

There are two games on BT Sport on Thursday, as the Pirates and Reds get things going from 17.35 on the ESPN channel before the Mariners and A’s start on BT Sport1 from 20.35.

Friday offers us a Cubs home game and the second opportunity to catch the Giants in early action.

BGB Fantasy League 2018 Week 6

There were some incredible individual performances in week six of the BaseballGB Fantasy League as a bunch of hitters put up ridiculous numbers.

And which manager would benefit from the third no-hitter of the year, which was pitched by James Paxton?

Team R HR RBI SB AVG OPS W SV K HLD ERA WHIP Score
Batteries Essential 18 2 20 2 .289 .773 1 2 42 0 5.45 1.36 0
Mighty Slugs 40 12 42 5 .311 .984 6 5 61 0 3.23 1.08 11

The Slugs were the biggest winners of the week, falling a hold shy of a clean sweep against an injury-ravaged Batteries Essential. Healy led the team with eight runs while Contreras had a big series against the White Sox, which saw him lead the team with a .478 average, three homers and 12 RBIs and he also stole a base. Stanton also hit three dingers.

On the mound, Keuchel posted sub-1.00 ERA and WHIP stats to go with his two wins, Tyson Ross struck out 13 and Doolittle had three saves. There wasn’t much to write home about for Batteries Essential. The average and OPS stats were good but the roster currently has just seven hitters and no bench pitchers.

Team R HR RBI SB AVG OPS W SV K HLD ERA WHIP Score
Beckenham A&E Dept 23 5 13 6 .233 .728 4 0 58 1 4.25 1.25 3

The Riverkings are top of the standings after their 9-3 win against the A&E Dept. An offensive sweep included Merrifield batting .405 for the week, while Mancini scored eight runs, hit three homers and knocked in six. Inciarte also drove in six and joined Betts in stealing four bases. Iglesias and Chapman had two saves each and when one of your starters pitches a no-hitter, you stand a good chance of winning ERA and WHIP, so take a bow James Paxton. The A&E Dept had a win and 14 strikeouts from Carrasco while Bradley had the lone hold.

The RBIs put on a hitting display, taking five categories on the way to an 8-3 win against the Bombers. The team slugged an impressive 17 homers and knocked in 50 runs. Gennett had a monster week (mainly against Dodger pitching) as he hit .591 for the week, which may well be a BaseballGB Fantasy League record. He also scored seven runs, hit four homers and knocked in 10.

Perez also drove in 10 but Judge led the team with 12 RBIs. Newcomb won twice without allowing an earned run and Severino struck out 18. Albies and Trout stole two bases each for the Bombers and Santana had a four-homer, 14 RBI week. Green had two holds.

The Knights got the better of the Isotopes 6-5 in a very tight matchup. Machado hit four homers and joined Trea Turner in scoring eight runs while Jose Ramirez swiped three bases. Gray had a win and 18 strikeouts while four different relievers picked up saves, including two each for Morrow and Hand. Upton knocked in 10 for the Isotopes while Lindor was red-hot at the plate, batting .600 (sorry Scooter, your record has already been broken!) and helping to take OPS. Roark, Greinke and Morton posted identical ERA (1.29) and WHIP (0.57) stats.

Norwich and the Chasers ended all-square at 6-6. Norwich had the better of the offense as Rosario scored seven runs and Story hit three homers and drove in 11. Spring hit .643 for the week (sorry Lindor, your record is already broken!). Ottavino had the lone hold. Baez stole two bases for the Chasers, who bossed the pitching categories. Nola had two wins and 16 strikeouts while Weaver and Taillon did not allow any earned runs. Greene had two saves.

Finally, there was another tie as the matchup between the Maltsters and Sox ended 5-5. The Maltsters had multi-homer weeks from four hitters, including Happ and JD Martinez, who each knocked in six. Castillo won twice and struck out 15 with a 0.69 WHIP. Madson had a win, a save and a hold. Bryant scored seven runs for the Sox and joined Polanco in hitting .500 for the week. Ohtani and Cole made the difference in ERA and Vizcaino had three saves.

MLB This Week: Four days out of Five

We’ve got pre-midnight UK time starts on every day but Friday this working week.

We start the week with a bonus game from Wrigley Field courtesy of a 15 April rain-out between the Braves and Cubs. Julio Teheran and Jose Quintana are the scheduled starting pitchers.

Tuesday’s early game takes us to Petco Park where the Padres host the Rockies. Colorado have been catching up on the D-Backs of late at the top of the NL West and will hope to take advantage of their division rivals to make further gains.

Wednesday, as often the case, gives us the most choice with nine early games to enjoy during the British evening, before the Marlins and Dodgers offer us an early-early game (17.10 start) on Thursday.

All times are in BST.

Weekly Hit Ground Ball: London, Yankees and Red Sox

Although we’re a few days on from Tuesday’s MLB London Series press conference, the excitement created by it is still palpable.

Many of us have known for several years that MLB was serious about bringing games to London and, more recently, that a 2019 series between the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees was almost certainly going to happen.

That didn’t make the announcement any the less thrilling, though. There have been false dawns in the past and so the potential for it to be postponed to another year, and then maybe cancelled altogether, couldn’t be completely shaken off.

The sight of MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred and co making it official, and confirming a 2020 series is on track too, not only gives all in the UK baseball community something to look forward to, but something to rally behind to raise the profile of the sport more widely. This blog post from BaseballSoftballUK puts it into context perfectly.

And don’t forget to contribute to the latest Batflips and Nerds survey if you haven’t done so yet.

Configuration of the playing field

Yankee fan (and Norwich City fan, so I’ll forgive him) Dave Clarke put together some potential field dimension plans for the London Stadium on Twitter.

Since Dave’s efforts, the preliminary dimensions of the field have been reported in various sites Stateside, such as this report at TheStar.com:

“The centre-field fence will be an inviting target, just 385 feet from home plate under the preliminary configuration of the stadium, which will accommodate 55,000 spectators.

The closest centre-field wall in baseball is at the Red Sox’s Fenway Park, where the 17-foot high wall is 390 feet from home plate. It quickly juts out to 420 feet in right-centre field and is adjoined by the Green Monster to the left. The wall at London Stadium will be between 12 and 14 feet high between the power alleys.

The power alleys will be 375 feet and the foul lines 333 feet with an eight-foot fence running between the alleys and the foul poles. Dimensions will be finalized in September”.

During the A’s-Yankees games on Saturday, the A’s broadcasters Glenn Kuiper and Ray Fosse made reference to it when Aaron Judge flied out to centre field at Yankee Stadium with a shot that almost certainly would have been over the wall in London. The dimensions of a make-shift stadium will always be a compromise, but let’s hope it produces a good contest and isn’t too homer friendly (much as seeing homers hit in the stadium would be fun).

Yankees and Red Sox show what to expect

It was likely no mere coincidence that the Yankees and Red Sox were playing a series against each other in New York when the London Series was announced.

They showed how good those games could be by producing a dramatic series, with the Yankees taking the first two – the second involving a four-run rally in the eighth off Craig Kimbrel to make it 17 wins out of 18 for New York and to lift them to the top of the AL East – only for the Red Sox to salvage a 5-4 win from the series on Thursday thanks to a J.D. Martinez home run in the eighth inning after the Yankees had scored four in the seventh to level the game.

We know we’ll get two competitive games in London next year, but the one hesitation I had with the news of it being the Red Sox and Yankees coming across the pond was in respect of the length of the games.

One of the comments I hear from Brits who don’t follow baseball is the preconception that games take a long time and if ever there were two teams that could make a nine-game inning last four hours or more it’s the Red Sox and Yankees. Even if it’s an exciting game for the rest of us, the casual observers would likely see that as a negative.

The games from this recent series lasted 3.30, 3.42 and 3.21 (with a 55 minute rain delay).  The average game time for a nine-inning contest so far this season has been dead-on 3 hours and it’s probably safe to assume an extra half an hour on top of that when these two teams come together.

It’s part of the ‘every pitch matters’ intensity of the games that shows MLB at its best – several players commented on the atmosphere at the recent series being akin to a play-off game – and so long as it doesn’t stray too far into the four-hour territory, few people will have reason to grumble.

Playing the game so you can’t lose

Years ago (not sure now in these app-betting days) I knew a few football fans who would put a couple of quid on the opposition winning when going to an away game, on the basis that if their team didn’t get a point or three they could at least soften the blow by having a ‘free’ takeaway that night from their winnings.

The fantasy baseball equivalent is getting the benefit of a player performing well against your chosen real-life team, or the other way around.

We have four potential starting pitcher slots in the BGB Fantasy League on any given day and I had five of my pitchers scheduled to take the mound on Friday. I decided to put former A’s pitcher, current Yankees pitcher, Sonny Gray in my line-up (benching Lance Lynn, which was not a difficult decision considering how he’s pitched for the Twins so far this season) so that if he pitched well against my A’s – which seemed a given – then at least it would be a boost to my fantasy team.

Just as those football fans didn’t care about their stake going to the bookies when celebrating an away win, I brushed aside the fantasy match-up impact of Gray’s night ending with 5 earned runs conceded and another L to his name.

BGB Fantasy League 2018: Week Five

Week five saw a combined no-hitter, some injuries to some big names and host of impressive rookies continuing bright starts to their MLB careers. How would the BaseballGB Fantasy League look afterwards?

Norwich are top of the standings after an 11-1 win against the Bombers. Norwich belted 16 homers including four from Harper and four from Rosario, who also scored eight times, knocked in 12 and stole two bases while batting .433. Junis had a win and 13 strikeouts, closely followed by Hader thanks to his eight-strikeout save. Corbin helped take ERA and WHIP. Tough week for the Bombers but Reed salvaged saves and Trout (.545) had a big week.

The Isotopes are above .500 after defeating the Slugs 11-1. Kemp hit .450 but the offensive star was Lindor, who hit .425 with 11 runs, four homers and 10 RBIs. Greinke struck out 15 and teamed with Morton to take ERA and WHIP while Rodney and Devenski took care of saves and holds. Richards helped take wins for the Slugs and Rizzo had a three-homer week, the batters had a team-wide slump.

An offensive sweep helped the RBIs defeat the Sox 8-2. Neither team hit for average but Gallo (five runs) and Mazara (11 RBIs) each belted four homers and Villar stole two bases. Giles and Strickland had a save each and Clevinger racked up 17 strikeouts. The Sox, now hit by injuries to Kershaw and deGrom, took ERA and WHIP thanks to another very impressive week from Cole.

Durham Riverkings 28 9 29 6 .256 .757 3 5 57 1 1.79 0.84 8

The Riverkings used a balanced attack against Batteries Essential, taking four hitting and four pitching categories in an 8-3 win. Despite Corey Seager being ruled out for the rest of the season, Torres stepped in at SS and had a great week with two homers and nine RBIs, while Betts scored seven runs, hit five homers, knocked in eight and hit .400. Paxton and Archer helped take ERA while Kluber picked up a win and Chapman had three saves.

Santana and Ramos helped Batteries Essential take average and OPS, but with only six batters playing in this matchup and a bunch of players wasted on the bench it is no surprise to see them struggle offensively. On the mound, Verlander (22) and Sale (18) racked up the strikeouts and Davis collected a trio of saves.

The Knights used an offensive sweep to defeat the Chasers 8-3. Pollock led the team with four homers, two steals  and a .423 average while the Cleveland duo of Encarnacion (10 RBIs) and Ramirez (nine runs) also had big weeks. Gray and Gausman helped take WHIP while Hand had three saves. The Chasers enjoyed another huge week from Scherzer, who picked up a win to go with 23 strikeouts and he also helped take ERA and WHIP.

Finally, the Maltsters handed the A&E Dept a rare loss, taking this matchup 7-3. Five Cheshunt batters had multi-homer weeks, led by three from JD Martinez while Hosmer drove in seven and Pham swiped two bases. Bauer led the staff with 19 strikeouts and teamed with Faria to take ERA and WHIP while Kimbrel and Jansen had two saves each. McCutchen (.474) and Hamilton (.400) helped Beckenham take average and OPS while Mikolas was one of four pitchers with a win and Bradley notched four holds.

Reminder: 20-inning minimum limit

Just a friendly reminder to make sure you hit the 20-inning minimum limit to avoid forfeiting all of the pitching categories. So far we have avoided this happening but the rash of pitching injuries may mean teams run the risk of dropping under the limit. One to keep an eye on if you don’t have a deep staff.

MLB This Week: All eyes on Tuesday’s Press Conference

In MLB This Week I usually round-up the UK-friendly early games taking place in the days ahead.

You can still find that below, but there’s a pretty big UK-related event happening on Tuesday that falls under the UK-friendly heading for different reasons.

London Mayor Sadiq Kahn and MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred will be staging a press conference in the capital to finally formally announce a two-game series for June 2019.

Baseball fans in the UK have had hopes for many years of MLB coming to these shores, with actual plans to do so being discussed publicly since 2011.

The key details, that it will be the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees facing each other at the London (Olympic) Stadium, have been known for a while, albeit not officially confirmed by MLB.

What else might we learn?

When and how it fits into the schedule

ESPN’s new story about the forthcoming press conference states that the games will be played on 29-30 June. Assuming that’s correct, that’s already useful in terms of long-term planning of potentially making one of those games.

However, what we don’t yet know is how those games will fit into the almost non-stop MLB schedule.

It’s relatively easy enough to take a series to Mexico – as they did this past weekend with the Dodgers and Padres – without much disruption, whilst trips to place such as Japan – as the A’s and Mariners will do next year – can be scheduled in March before the regular season gets underway.

The logistics of bringing games to Europe, and the UK in particular, have always posed the question of how you do it without it causing scheduling problems for the teams involved. That’s vitally important if we want MLB to see coming to London as a completely positive venture and to encourage future visits.

So, how the off-days will be sorted out and how it will fit into the schedule will be a key talking point that hopefully will be clarified.

How it fits into London Stadium

As above, going to places like Mexico and Japan is less challenging as they have ballparks you can either use as they are or bring up to a better standard.

We don’t have such a venue to use in the UK (maybe one day?).

Sydney Cricket Ground was transformed into a ballpark for the 2014 Opening Series between the D-Backs and Dodgers, so it can be done and the London Stadium has been chosen from various sites in the capital as the best fit.

However, staging games in a non-dedicated baseball ballpark unavoidably means that there will be some compromises in terms of the playing dimensions and viewing angles.  It would be great to see some images of how MLB expects it to look.

What about 2020?

It may seem hugely ungrateful, after years of waiting, to respond to news of MLB games in 2019 by asking for more.

But, it’s a valid question in this case as the MLB Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) included plans to come to London in both 2019 and 2020.

So, are we going to get a firm commitment on Tuesday that this isn’t a one-off and MLB is coming both years, or will they be coy about a potential return?

Most signs have been pointing to the New York Mets making the trip in 2020. It’s worth noting that it couldn’t be a Subway Series, or a Boston return, as the current CBA prohibits the same club from playing more than one non-Mexico/Dominican Republic/Puerto Rico international event during the 2017-2021 agreement.

We shouldn’t expect any specifics about the match-up at this point, there’s no reason to do anything to take away attention from the 2019 Red Sox and Yankees series, yet not confirming the 2020 event too will take something away from the announcement bearing in mind it’s public knowledge that this is the plan (in other words, fairly or not, sceptics would latch onto it as MLB lacking confidence in making a success of 2019).

MLB’s longer-term goals

The NFL’s London project always had the potential end-game of an expansion team being based here, following the lessons learned from the NFL Europe competition. For a whole host of reasons, that’s clearly not in MLB’s mind as a realistic model to follow, so what actually is the plan?

When I raise this question here I do so with no great expectation that we’ll get any detailed answers at the press conference. No one wants to be held a hostage to fortune, least of all the MLB Commissioner, so I would expect discussions of MLB’s longer-term goal to be shrouded in generic aspirational terms.

In any case, the whole point about this is that – different to the NFL’s approach – MLB’s venture into London is part of a much wider international plan. That’s a great thing for baseball, but I think is something being overlooked by some UK baseball fans based on Twitter comments (again, seeing it through the lens of the NFL London expansion).

Take the MLB International office in London, for example. The MLB UK Twitter account leads people to refer to it as the MLB UK office but it’s really not in that sense; its remit extends across the whole of Europe, the Middle East, Africa and India. Much as they will have a huge role to play in the London series, their work is far from solely focused on expanding MLB in the UK.

The current CBA includes not only International Play Events but also Spring Training and post-World Series trips.  I expect that the next CBA (subject to any lingering free agency-related acrimony) will continue this approach and that MLB’s medium-term plan is to make international series events a standard part of the MLB regular season calendar, with perhaps four or five series every year in different countries.  That would likely include future games in London beyond the 2019-2020 events, although playing a series elsewhere in Europe (especially established markets such as the Netherlands, Italy and Germany) would make a great deal of sense too.

Excitement builds

Whatever extra topics they do or don’t discuss at the press conference, the key details are something many of us have been waiting years for. Tuesday should be a memorable day for UK-based baseball fans.

BGB Fantasy League 2018: Week Four

Week four of the BaseballGB Fantasy League saw a number of young players make an impact with Torres and Acuna getting a taste of life in MLB. But which managers would benefit from their efforts?

Durham Riverkings 37 8 28 10 .292 .848 4 6 48 2 3.14 1.23 9

The Riverkings are top of the standings after a convincing 9-2 win against the Isotopes. Moncada scored seven runs and hit .371 for the week, while Inciarte batted .364 with seven runs and six steals. The infield was also boosted with the arrival of Yankees prospect Torres, who hit .348.

Snell and Kluber each had a win and helped take ERA, with Corey striking out 10. Chapman had three saves. Cespedes drove in seven for the Isotopes, while Realmuto hit three homers in his first full week back from injury and Altuve discovered his home run stroke. Not much to write home about on the pitching side, apart from two holds for Devenski.

The RBIs also enjoyed a big week, defeating Norwich 9-2. Gregorius belted four homers, knocking in 10, while batting .357 for the week. Gennett scored seven and knocked in seven with a .393 average. Darvish helped take ERA and WHIP and tied for the team lead with eight strikeouts while Strickland had four saves. Tanaka won twice for Norwich and Ottavino had a pair of holds. Springer (.375) and Freeman (.355) had great averages but the team fell .001 shy of a tie in that category.

Votto hit four of them while the Seattle duo of Hangier (seven runs) and Zunino hit three each. Marwin Gonzalez, JD Martinez and Pham all hit above .400 for the week. Gio Gonzalez struck out 12, Fulmer did not allow an earned run and Miller had the lone hold before his injury. Benintendi had two steals for Batteries Essential and Verlander helped take WHIP. The roster has a lot of injuries and moves need to be made to avoid being a cellar dweller.

Chatwood won twice, fellow Cub Hendricks helped take WHIP and Porcello struck out 15. Diaz, one of the closers of the season so far, had three more saves. Andujar hit above .400 for the Sox and Marte had a steal but the injury list grows with Andrus out and no SS on the bench.
