MLB this Week: Deadline closing in

With the non-waiver trade deadline closing in, you can never be sure which team a scheduled starting pitcher may end up taking the field for.

There are ten games stating before midnight U.K. time this working week and you just might see a player or two making their debut for a new team in one of them.

If the probable pitching match-ups hold true, Thursday will provide two excellent encounters thanks to Jake Peavy and Justin Verlander facing off in Chicago and A.J. Burnett and Gio Gonzalez doing likewise in Washington.

On Friday, the U.S. capital is hosting a double-header and, with fingers firmly crossed, the current plan is for Matt Harvey to pitch in the opener for the New York Mets.

This week in MLB: Nine early games

There are nine MLB games starting before midnight U.K. time this working week, all coming in the second half.

On Wednesday the most intriguing match-up will take place in San Francisco between young Mets pitch Zack Wheeler and Matt Cain. The Giants’ starter had arguably the worst start of his career last time out when the Dodgers hit him for eight earned runs in 2.1 innings.

The stand-out pitching match-up from the group should come on Thursday as Chris Sale and Anibal Sanchez are scheduled to take the mound for the White Sox and Tigers respectively. Sanchez will be making his second start after a short stint on the Disabled List due to shoulder soreness.

BBC 5 Live Sports Extra are scheduled to broadcast the game between the Royals and Yankees on Thursday. Coverage is due to begin at 18.30 although the game may be joined in progress if Day Two of the first Ashes Test runs over.

MLB this Week: Independence Day and more

It may feel like only a few weeks since the excitement of Opening Day, but we’ve already reached July and the second half of the MLB season is underway.

This week’s schedule of pre-midnight U.K. time MLB games is dominated by a bundle on Thursday, which is Independence Day in the States. The fact that ten day-games will be played on the public holiday is probably responsible for there being only one early game on Wednesday, and one that starts at just gone 11 o’clock, but I guess we shouldn’t be too greedy.

The MLB show on BBC 5 Live Sports Extra will be on air from 18.00 on Thursday, although it doesn’t say on the schedule yet which game they will be broadcasting [Update: it’s the Giants v Reds game]. ESPN America will broadcast two games back-to-back that evening, alongside a game on Monday and Friday. This is the channel’s final month before it ceases to broadcast and MLB coverage moves over to an ESPN branded channel as part of the new BT Sport package.

MLB this Week: Early games from Wednesday onwards

This week in MLB is slightly unusual as a number of teams are playing two-game Interleague series, under the new Interleague set-up.

The result is that there are only four games in total on Monday and neither that day or Tuesday offers any games starting before midnight U.K. time.

Things pick up on Wednesday and Thursday, though. Highlights include an R.A. Dickey start for the Blue Jays against the Rays, a Felix Hernandez start at SAFECO Field against the Pirates on Wednesday. Thursday games are highlighted by two excellent all-American League match-ups and a Stephen Strasburg home start for Washington against the Diamondbacks.

None of the early games are being shown live on ESPN America this week and there isn’t a game on BBC 5 Live Sports Extra, but starts by Felix Hernandez and Stephen Strasburg will be shown for free on MLB.com.

MLB this Week: Double-headers on Tuesday

Tuesday rarely offers an opportunity to catch some live MLB games during the British evening, but this week is an exception thanks to two double-headers.

The Rays and Red Sox are playing two at Fenway this Tuesday, whilst the Mets and Braves are also doubling up.

Teams do sometimes switch their starting pitchers when double-headers come along, but hopefully the Mets will stick to their normal rotation and send Matt Harvey out to the mound for the opener.

As for the Rays, their exciting hitting prospect Wil Meyers is due to make his Major League debut on Tuesday, although it seems as though he will only play in one of the two games and we don’t yet know if he’ll feature in the day-game.

There are MLB games starting before midnight U.K. time each evening from Tuesday onwards this working week. ESPN America also will be continuing its coverage of the College World Series. This includes a game at 20.00 on Friday night despite their being an early MLB game that evening, although to be fair to the broadcaster the MLB offering is Astros-Cubs that even their fans would admit is not likely to be a ‘can’t miss’ event for neutrals.

MLB this Week: Early games on Wednesday and Thursday

Only Wednesday and Thursday provide MLB games scheduled to start before midnight U.K. time this working week.

However, what we lack in quantity should be made up for in terms of quality.

On Wednesday Kaufmann Stadium should be hosting a pitching duel between Justin Verlander and James Shields.

The Royals trade for Shields was meant to be part of an effort to put the team in playoff contention for the first time in years.  Unfortunately for Kansas City, that optimism hasn’t translated into a strong start to the season, but Shields has lived up to his side of the bargain with some impressive pitching that is completely lost in his deceptive 2-6 win-loss record.

There are good pitchers on show in all of the four early games on Thursday. The first match-up is arguably the most impressive with Adam Wainwright and Matt Harvey scheduled to be the starting pitchers. Harvey left his last start on Saturday with tightness in his back but the Mets are confident that he’ll be ready to go on Thursday and it should make for a great contest against Wainwright, who has arguably been the best pitcher in baseball so far this season.

MLB this Week: CC faces Cleveland on Wednesday

There are nine MLB games to enjoy this working week that begin before midnight U.K. time.

We draw a blank on Monday and Tueday, but from then on there are a series of good match-ups and talented pitchers scheduled to be on the mound.

The games include CC Sabathia taking on his former team, the Cleveland Indians, Cole Hamels facing the Marlins, R.A. Dickey taking on the Giants and Max Scherzer facing the Rays.

MLB this Week: Early baseball every evening

We have at least one MLB game starting before midnight U.K. time every day this working week.

Over the rest of the week there are several early games from Wrigley Field, including Thursday’s clash against the White Sox that will be broadcast live on BBC 5 Live Sports Extra. The ESPN America game that evening will be determined by a “viewers’ vote” poll, so head over to their website if you want to cast a vote.

MLB this Week: Potential Latos-Harvey match-up on Wednesday

There are ten MLB games currently scheduled to begin before midnight U.K. time this working week.

Hisashi Iwakuma has arguably been Seattle’s best pitcher this season and he’ll look to help his team avoid a series sweep in the finale against Cleveland on Monday. The Indians have won the first three games of their series against the Mariners, including a victory against Felix Hernandez on Sunday.

Meanwhile, in Toronto, Tampa Bay will call up pitching prospect Jake Odorizzi as a replacement for the injured David Price. Odorizzi was one of the prospects the Rays obtained from the Kansas City Royals when they traded away James Shields.

The probable pitching match-up that jumps out at you from the group on Wednesday takes place at Citi Field. Mat Latos and Matt Harvey should meet in an exciting game between the Reds and Mets.

On Thursday, Edwin Jackson and Jeanmar Gomez are the scheduled starting pitchers for the BBC 5 Live Sports Extra game on Thursday, starting a little earlier than usual at 17.35.

MLB this Week: Good games ahead

The working week of MLB games starting before midnight U.K. time begins on Monday with a rare double-header in which both games fall in the ‘early’ bracket.

We then have a good group of games to choose from on Wednesday, before a Mets-Cardinals clash on BBC 5 Live Sports Extra on Thursday and a Mets-Cubs contest on Friday in which, providing New York’s rotation stays on its normal schedule, we’ll get a chance to watch one of the most exciting young pitchers in the game: Matt Harvey.
