Great Britain announced their 40-man preliminary roster for the 2009 Baseball World Cup yesterday.  The roster is built around the core of the 2007 European Championship silver medal team, including tournament MVP Brant Ust and catcher Mike Nickeas, and features players currently competing in leagues in North America, Europe and here in Britain.

The 40-man roster will be reduced to twenty-four when the tournament begins on 9 September.  Team GB’s first game is scheduled for 10 September, when they will take on Japan in Zagreb, Croatia.  Continue reading

Great Britain’s 2009 Baseball World Cup journey will now begin at a new destination.  The International Baseball Federation (IBAF) announced yesterday that Croatia will replace Russia in the tournament and take over as the host of Pool D. 

The move from Moscow to Zagreb has been confirmed less than two months before the tournament is scheduled to begin on 9 September.  Continue reading

Mixed reports on World Cup progress

The IBAF have announced “impressive” early ticket sales for the Baseball World Cup, to be staged across Europe this September.   Over 8,000 tickets have been sold in forty-eight hours for the Pool E games based in Regensburg, Germany.

The news is a welcome source of optimism for the year ahead; however Regensburg is the only venue currently selling tickets.   Little information has been published about the organization of the tournament in recent months and, according to recent reports from Mister-Baseball.com, this lack of progress is causing concern.  Continue reading

Great Britain confirmed for the 2009 Baseball World Cup

British baseball received a boost yesterday with the official confirmation that the national team will be taking its place in next year’s Baseball World Cup.  As previously reported, Britain had qualified for the tournament due to their excellent silver-medal showing in the 2007 European Baseball Championships, but their participation was put in doubt by the initial press release issued by the International Baseball Federation in September.  Continue reading

Nicaraguans complete GB’s pool for 2009 World Cup

Nicaragua lost 4-1 to Puerto Rico yesterday on what was the final day of the Baseball Cup of the Americas. This meant that Puerto Rico finished at the top of the group with a 7-1 record, while Nicaragua had to settle for second place (going 6-2). The significance of this for Great Britain is that Nicaragua will join Japan and the hosts Russia in Great Britain’s four-team pool in the Baseball World Cup next September.

Uncertainty over Britain’s place in the 2009 Baseball World Cup

A press conference was held in Regensburg, Germany two weeks ago to announce details of next year’s IBAF Baseball World Cup.  The marquee international tournament is being held in Europe and promises to be a great showcase for the sport; however two weeks on and there is still some uncertainty over Great Britain’s involvement in the competition.  Continue reading
