The Sox put up incredible pitching stats against the Knights. No, those ERA and WHIP stats are not typos as Bumgarner, Greinke and Street (three saves) did not allow an earned run while just making it over the 20-inning minimum. Rizzo and Brauin had multi-homer weeks while Altuve’s hot streak saw him take average and OPS. Joey Bats hit three homers, scored seven and drove in seven for the Knights, and was one of four players to steal. Wilson had two holds.

Finally, Batteries Essential and the Angels couldn’t be separated, ending 5-5. The Angels had multi-win weeks from Iwakuma, Bauer and Buchholz, who struck out at least 15 batters each.

Riverkings Active In Trade Market

A week after a blockbuster with the Knights, the Riverkings made another deal, acquiring Yoenis Cespedes from Batteries Essential for Alex Wood. The deal gives the Riverkings another power option who can play CF, albeit the average may take a hit. Batteries Essential were trading from a position of depth to nab a much-needed arm. We’ll see if Wood can boost the rotation as the Braves race for the playoffs.

The week 16 matchups are as follows

A pair of Nats – Werth (seven runs, two homers, nine RBIs) and Zimmerman (.524, six RBIs) – did most of the damage. McHugh struck out 12 and Gregerson had two holds. Despite being heavily behind early in the week, my Isotopes not only beat the Butchers 6-5 but went top in the process. The offense did all of the work with a sweep, as Cruz homered twice, scored five times and drove in five while hitting .345. Puig scored six times and the belated returns of Hanley (injury) and Machado (suspension) did help. Soriano’s save on Sunday proved vital to the win. The Butchers saw Richards, Price and Hahn combine for five wins and 49 strikeouts and Kalhoun homered twice.

We start with the biggest winners of the week, who turned out to be my Isotopes. They defeated the Angels 11-1, including an offensive sweep thanks to Duda (six RBIs), Frazier (four steals) and Machado (three homers). Batteries Essential are top after defeating the Sox 8-3 thanks to a pitching sweep. Rosenthal and Brothers took care of saves and holds and Garza struck out 11, but the start of the show was Lincecum, who hurled his second career no-no against the Padres last week, taking ERA and WHIP as you’d imagine. The Sox had two homers from Rizzo, Braun hit .400 for the week while Altuve batted .481 and ran wild on the bases, swiping 10 on his own… against the team with Billy Hamilton.

Matt Adams had a three-homer week and drove in eight while Trout hit .421 and homered twice. Broxton picked up two wins and Teheran and Tillman helped post a ridiculously good team WHIP and probably would have won ERA in most other weeks too. Stroman and Price racked up the strikeouts for the Butchers, while it was a monster week for the bullpen with three saves for Kimbrel and Melancon while Clippard had a win, a save and a hold. Beckett’s scoreless start helped take ERA.

Finally, it was a matchup of two halves as the RBIs and Bits & Bytes ended 5-5. The RBIs dominated offensively, with LaRoche homering three times and joining Lind in driving in seven. Bits & Bytes had a pair of wins from Kershaw and King Felix, who also combined for 36 strikeouts and took ERA and WHIP by some distance.

WHEELERS AND DEALERS

The first trade of the season has taken place, with the Knights dealing Goldschmidt and Moss to the Riverkings for Harper and Wright. It an interesting trade for both teams, with four big bats involved.

The Knights are banking on a big second half from Harper now he’s back from injury, while Wright fills the problem position of 3B. For the Riverkings, they can switch Carlos Santana to 3B and acquire one of the NL’s best players in Goldy and add a power bat in Moss to make up for Harper’s departure. We’ll see how it pans out and if it gets the wheels turning on other trades.

Cruz, Frazier and Duda each homered twice while Hanley Ramirez scored seven times and the bruised and battered Derek Norris drove in six when he was being hit by backswings. A great Sunday start by Elias made the difference in wins, ERA and WHIP, while Soriano collected four saves. Another matchup, another 8-3 as the Riverkings defeated the Chasers. The hitters and pitchers each took four categories. Montero and Desmond each had three-homer weeks, while Robertson, Allen and Blevins took care of saves and holds. It was hardly a vintage week for the ERA of both staffs, but Buehrle made the difference for the Riverkings. Kipnis and Leonys Martin each had two steals for the Chasers, while Miguel Cabrera, Pence and Crisp posted huge OPS stats. Ryu was the pick of the starters.

The Slugs caused an upset by beating Batteries Essential… yes, you guessed it, 8-3. Donaldson homered twice, the Brew Crew duo of Gomez and Davis combined for 11 runs and Dee Gordon swiped three bases. The pitchers took all categories bar wins, with Sanchez the pick of the bunch. Uehara had the lone save and Betances collected a pair of holds. Batteries Essential took average on a tiebreaker thanks to Gattis and Walker, while Matt Garza won both his starts.

The new team that the top are Norwich No II as they earned an impressive 10-2 victory over the Mighty Slugs.

Dee Gordon, Carlos Gomez and Matt Carpenter allowed the Slugs to put up a strong stolen base total (7) to win that category, but Norwich’s performance across the rest of the categories made it a comfortable match-up win. Kyle Seager went deep twice for No II, whilst Aroldis Chapman, Kenley Jansen and Zach Britton picked up a combined seven saves.

Next up were my own Cheddar Chasers who managed to match Norwich No II with a 10-2 match-up win over Iron Men.

Miguel Cabrera looks like he might be starting to hit like the two-time MVP winner he is and he put three balls over the fence and collected seven RBI in the process, whilst David Ortiz drove in six when he wasn’t arguing with David Price. Tim Hudson, Hyun-Jin Ryu and Jon Lester all earned two pitching wins apiece with Lester leading the week with 19 strike-outs.

As for the Iron Men, Devin Mesoraco provided three homers from the catching position, but they’ll be extremely glad to see slugger Jose Abreu returning to the White Sox’s lineup this week after his spell on the Disabled List.

Mark’s Orpington Isotopes took an 8-4 victory over Bits & Bytes with a strong offensive display that included four bombs from Nelson Cruz, three more from Lucas Duda alongside two homers, eight RBI and two stolen bases from Hanley Ramirez. Meanwhile it was a depleted showing from Bits & Bytes with their St. Louis contingent (Molina, Bourjos and Holliday) going strangely quiet.

The Bytes could rely on King Felix Hernandez to add a win and nine K’s to their total, yet the Isotopes were able to put up a good showing overall with all ten of the pitchers earning at least one strikeout.

The Riverkings used just five pitchers on the week but they combined to three of the pitching categories with David Robertson and Cody Allen each collecting two saves and Chris Sale performing well despite having a rain-shorted start against Cleveland that limited his ability to clock up some K’s.

Zack Greinke provided a win and eighteen strike-outs, with Madison Bumgarner also adding a win and just getting into double-digits in the K column and Huston Street adding three saves for the Sox. Springer’s week for Ash Vale amounted to three homers, nine runs and seven RBI and they were quick to add another top prospect to their ranks in the Cardinals’ Oscar Taveras, although he wasn’t in Ash Vale’s starting line-up when he announced his arrival to the Majors with a home run.

Jonathan Broxton led Jesmond’s pitching staff with four holds and their six pitching wins came from six different pitchers in a good combined effort. The Bananas were able to grab a few categories and the match-up thanks to Casey Janssen’s lone save of the match-up and double-digit strikeout totals from Cole Hamels and Kyle Lohse.

Only one category score could separate the RBI’s and Knights last week and it went in favour of Northfleet.

Will Smith’s solitary hold was the only one of the contest and that proved to be decisive for the Knights in such a tight battle. Joakim Soria and Ernesto Frieri combined for five saves for Northfleet as the RBI’s pitchers didn’t really get going despite Masahiro Tanaka adding another win to his collection.

The RBI’s didn’t take their own category but the offense did well in average and OBP, with Adam LaRoche putting p good numbrs and taking two balls over the fence for good measure.

Edwin Encarnacion completed a torrid month by launching five homers on the week to help the Butchers’ cause, scoring nine runs and driving in ten along the way and Tyler Skaggs was the stand-out performer on the mound for Enfield with 15 K’s from his two starts.

Beck’Nams took four of the six pitching categories with 12 strikeouts each from Yu Darvish and Corey Kluber and two holds each from Junichi Tazawa and Jean Machi, but arguably the decisive category came on the offensive side of the ledger. A.J. Pollock may have broken his hand but he at least gave the Beck’Nams two stolen bases on the week and with Allen Craig, Jose Reyes and Norichika Aoki all adding a swiped bag too that was enough to take the category 5-4 and to make for a 6-5 match-up.
