BGB Fantasy League 2015: Week 24

We now know which two teams are competing for the BaseballGB fantasy league title. Read on to find out who made it through.

Team R HR RBI SB AVG OPS W SV K HLD ERA WHIP Score
Jesmond Dennings 20 8 37 2 .208 .678 3 1 59 0 2.28 0.99 2
Mighty Slugs 26 11 39 2 .268 .911 3 3 75 4 2.64 1.19 8

Jesmond, who topped the standings in the regular season, were knocked out 8-2 by the Slugs, who were a steal away from an offensive sweep. Duda had a three-homer week and drove in 12, Joey bats also hit three dingers and Piscotty homered twice and drove in seven. Price struck out 13 while Boxberger had three saves and Soria collected a trio of holds. Carrasco and Rich Hill salvaged ERA and WHIP for Jesmond, who must be congratulated on a fine season and a team name which still makes me laugh.

MLB this Week: The final week

CovMLBUK2014We’re into the final week of the 2015 MLB regular season.

Some teams are hoping to pick up a few more wins to earn home-field advantage in the play-offs.

Some teams are hoping to pick up a few more wins to get to the play-offs.

Some teams are hoping to pick up a few more wins just so they can end the season with a few more wins.

With everyone having something to play for, even if it’s just for pride, only four games are being played during the day-time this working week. Here are those pre-midnight starts for us in the UK.

All times are in BST.

Monday 28 September

20.05. Cincinnati at Washington (Finnegan -Roark)

2015 has been a disappointing season for these two teams and for Washington in particular. Crowned by many as the NL champions – never mind the NL East champs – before a pitch was thrown, the Nationals will head into the offseason looking for reasons why a talented roster on paper hasn’t produced on the field.

Thursday 1 October

17.35. Chicago Cubs at Cincinnati (Hammel – Lamb)
20.45. LA Dodgers at San Francisco (Anderson – Hudson) *BT Sport/ESPN
23.40. Milwaukee at San Diego (Jungmann – Kelly)

The Cubs are back in the postseason for the first time since 2008 and their final two series against the Reds and Brewers respectively will give them a chance to rest a few regulars and then get ready for their Wild Card game.

The Giants have stayed true to recent form by following up a World Series win with a disappointing regular season; however even Dodger fans would begrudgingly admit they’d take three play-off-free seasons if mixed in with three titles.

As for the Padres, they will finish off the 2015 season knowing that they will be a constant reference point during the off-season Hot Stove, only not for good reasons. Any team deemed to have ‘won the off-season’ will be reminded immediately of how that didn’t help the Padres.

Friday 2 October

All of these games are available to watch or listen to live via an MLB.TV subscription. TV coverage of MLB comes courtesy of the BT Sport and ESPN channels and these are highlighted above, as are any games that are available to view online for free via MLB.com. The above list of games just shows those starting before midnight UK time. The full schedule of MLB games can be found on MLB.com.

BGB Fantasy League 2015: Week 23

Week 23 of the BaseballGB Fantasy League saw the first round of the playoffs take place – and only one of the top four survived. Which teams can still dream of claiming the title, and who will have to wait until next year?

Team R HR RBI SB AVG OPS W SV K HLD ERA WHIP Score
Norwich No II 36 12 41 3 .320 .968 4 4 51 0 1.76 0.73 11
Iron Men 14 3 13 2 .255 .700 2 1 35 4 4.83 1.14 1

We begin with the biggest winners of the week, as Norwich battered Iron Men 11-1. An offensive sweep was powered by Harper, who scored 12 runs, hit five homers, knocked in 10 and batted over .500 for the week. Abreu and Lindor each homered twice, driving in nine and eight respectively. Alex Wood picked up a win without allowing an earned run and helped take ERA and WHIP, while Iwakuma and Rodriguez each struck out nine and Miller had two saves. Iron men had two holds each from Watson and O’Day, but paid the price for not acting on injuries to Tulowitzki and Kang and leaving some good pitching on the bench.

Team R HR RBI SB AVG OPS W SV K HLD ERA WHIP Score
NE Riverkings 32 8 23 4 .304 .852 1 6 65 0 4.24 1.32 8
Newcastle Knights 27 6 22 0 .221 .636 6 3 55 2 1.84 0.95 4

The Riverkings are through to the semi-finals after defeating the Knights 8-4. There was another offensive sweep, mainly powered by Kendrys Morales’s monster Sunday, as he homered four times and scored seven runs for the week. Choo batted .520 with seven runs, Rizzo knocked in seven and Khris Davis homered twice. Rosenthal and Britton had two saves each and Nola struck out 12. Six different Knights pitchers picked up wins, including Gonzalez, who struck out 12, and Tomlin, Corbin and Estrada, who did not allow an earned run between them.

Team R HR RBI SB AVG OPS W SV K HLD ERA WHIP Score
Jesmond Dennings 25 5 32 7 .270 .746 4 2 52 0 3.44 1.37 7
Batteries Essential 31 6 35 5 .264 .736 2 1 44 1 3.59 1.22 5

Jesmond just made it through after the top seed squeezed past Batteries Essential 7-5. Carrasco had a win and 18 strikeouts, helping take ERA in the process. Chapman had a win and two saves. Pollock hit .478 and joined McCutchen in stealing two bases. Fielder hit three homers for Batteries Essential, scoring and driving in nine runs, while Romo had a hold and Chen helped take WHIP. A tough loss to take, especially as a lot of categories were close, but fair play for pushing the top seeds right until the end.

Team R HR RBI SB AVG OPS W SV K HLD ERA WHIP Score
Mighty Slugs 21 8 24 1 .235 .738 5 1 55 4 2.58 1.26 6
Weston-Super-Sox 33 7 27 6 .281 .782 2 2 37 1 5.26 1.47 6

Finally, the Slugs and Sox finished 6-6, with the Slugs advancing on a tiebreak. Lester, Shields, Matz and Price all picked up wins and helped take ERA and WHIP for the Slugs, while Grimm and Smith had two holds each. Moustakas and Gattis had two homers each. For the Sox, Escobar scored and drove in seven, while Dee Gordon batted .433 with three steals. Strop and Robertson had a save each. In the regular season, the Slugs had defeated the Sox 8-1 and lost 3-9, putting them through with a combined record of 11-10.

The week 24 matchups are as follows:

CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI-FINALS

Jesmond (1st) v Slugs (5th)

Norwich (6th) v Riverkings (7th)

CONSOLATION SEMI-FINALS

Knights (2nd) v Iron Men (3rd)

Sox (4th) v Batteries Essential (8th)

MLB this Week: Two weeks to go

CovMLBUK2014With just two weeks of the MLB regular season to go, there is still plenty to play for and that’s shown in the games starting pre-midnight UK time this working week.

The Angels and Astros are playing a potentially crucial three-game series this week and the finale on Wednesday is a day-game for us to enjoy. Meanwhile their rival in the AL West/Wild Card race the Texas Rangers take on the Oakland A’s in an early game on Thursday.

The week will end with the start of a big series from Wrigley Field between the Cubs and the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The White Sox and Tigers are in early action twice and although neither team has had the season they hoped for, that’s unlikely to reduce the enthusiasm on Wednesday if – as scheduled – we get a pitching duel between Chris Sale and Justin Verlander.

The risk of injury

On Tuesday night I noted on Twitter that it was good to see BT Sport finding space in their schedule for a live MLB game on an evening when their coverage of full Champions League football was beginning.

BT Sport’s coverage of the two sports this week contained two painful moments.

On Tuesday night I was watching the MLB game between the Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates and occasionally dipping into the Champions League action. At one point I switched over to the PSV-Man Utd game to see the dreadful sight of a player – United’s Luke Shaw, it turned out – prone on the pitch surrounded by medical staff in what was obviously a serious incident.

Shaw had suffered a double fracture to his right leg following a tackle by PSV defender Hector Moreno. It was a very poor challenge, yet prompted the usual defence that he didn’t mean to hurt his opponent. I’m sure it is a true statement; however all it tells you is that Moreno isn’t a complete liability who shouldn’t be allowed on a football pitch again.

Still, that seems to be the way it works in football. So long as the offender is judged as ‘not that sort of player’, the outrage doesn’t last for long.

Moreno’s challenge was forceful and reckless and had it not resulted in a bad injury then it would have been purely down to good fortune. It’s amazing how often players get lucky in similar situations and there’s a potential skewed assessment of risk involved here. Players and fans put a lot of store in the likelihood of a bad injury occurring seemingly being small and therefore accept the fact that there can be a huge impact if that risk does occur.

Shaw will be out for many months and will face doubts as to whether he will fully recover and come back as the player he was (or was developing into). Here’s hoping that he does.

Then on Thursday, in the final game of the Cubs-Pirates series, Pittsburgh’s Korean infielder Jung Ho Kang suffered a fractured tibia and torn meniscus when he was taken out at second base on a slide by Chris Coghlan.

Kang has been a revelation in his debut MLB season, brushing aside doubts over how his excellent performances in his native country’s baseball league would translate. It’s a terrible blow for him – and the many baseball fans in Korea so excited about their star player – that he will play no part in the rest of the Pirates’ season.

However, few players complained about it much, including Kang himself. Charging into second base to disrupt a potential double-play is considered not simply part of the game, but part of playing the game ‘the right way’. If that occasionally sees a player end up with a bad injury then that’s just accepted as an unfortunate consequence.

I know I’m not the only baseball fan who doesn’t quite see it that way, but to a large extent that doesn’t really matter.

Call it ‘the right way’, the ‘spirit of the game’, the ‘unwritten rules’; every sport has a code that the players create, endorse and uphold. That’s the way it should be as they are the ones playing the game and whose profession it relates to. Some fans may disagree with it at times, but unless it’s something so out of kilter that a groundswell of opposition forces the governing body to reassess, that disagreement is a side issue. This is the game and how it is played, if you don’t like it watch something else.

The trouble is that these rules, like most other things in sport, tend to bend when they come up against the rather one-eyed view teams have depending on which side of the matter they are on.

The Cubs’ manager Joe Maddon lashed out at the St Louis Cardinals on Friday for retaliating after pitcher Dan Haren hit the Cards’ Matt Holliday with a pitch. Intentional or not – and as someone who supports neither team I’ll put my largely unbiased view in the not camp in this case – St Louis saw fit to respond by hitting Anthony Rizzo with a pitch soon after.

Maddon was unhappy and had every right to be, it’s a ridiculous custom that teams deliberately pitch at players in this way, but there are plenty in the game who see it as a key way in which teammates are protected.  Whether Maddon agrees with the act or not, there will be times when his team decides to do the exact same thing.

So long as a player doesn’t get badly hurt by the practice then the potential risk of serious injury from it will be overlooked, just like a diving tackle or a hard slide. Let’s hope there’s a good reason for people to keep turning a blind-eye to it for a long time to come.

BGB Fantasy League 2015: Week 22

After 21 weeks, three playoff places were still up for grabs going into the final week of the regular season in the BaseballGB Fantasy League. Which teams made it and who just missed out at a shot at the title?

The pitchers had a sweep, as King Felix and deGrom each had a win and help take ERA and WHIP, while Smith had a win and two holds and Familia had four saves. Khris Davis had three homers, joined Choo in driving in six and stole a base. Choo also scored six runs, as did Bogaerts. MLB this Week: Spotlight on the NL Central

CovMLBUK2014It’s almost certain that, with two weeks to go in the regular season, three of the five National League playoff spots will be taken by teams from the Central division.

It’s fortunate for us therefore that the three protagonists – the Cardinals, Cubs and Pirates – are scheduled to play day-games this working week in contests that will have a playoff atmosphere.

Two of them are games from the Cubs-Pirates series and Tuesday’s potential pitching match-up between Jon Lester and Gerrit Cole could well be a dress rehearsal for a thrilling Wild Card game. That makes it all the more pleasing that BT Sport have found space in their schedule to show it live on Tuesday despite that being the first night of their Champions League coverage.

That’s assuming the Cardinals will keep a hold of the top spot in the division. That will not be easy and the Cubs will look to a series at Wrigley Field to eat into their lead, the first game of which brings us a great start to the weekend on Friday evening.

Finally, the Riverkings occupy a playoff place – but aren’t through yet – going into the final week aftera  4-4 tie with Bits & Bytes. Bogaerts knocked in eight for the Riverkings while Khris Davis swiped two bases. King Felix and Harvey struck out 9 each, while Rosenthal and Familia had one save apiece. Reyes, Kemp and Gordon helped Bits & Bytes take average and OPS, while McHugh and Ventura helped take ERA and WHIP on a skeleton pitching staff.

ONE WEEK LEFT BEFORE PLAYOFFS BEGIN

The Knights, Jesmond, Iron Men, Slugs and Sox are through to the playoffs but will be fighting to finish as high seeds for the first round. Norwich, Riverkings and Batteries Essential are in possession of the final three places, but need to fend off a bunch of other teams. Incredibly, after all of the matchups this season, the team in 12th now, the Chasers, could still make the playoffs if they win big and other results go their way. So let’s play hard in the final week and see what happens!

Week 22 matchups

Knights (1st) v Sox (5th)

Jesmond (2nd) v Batteries Essential (8th)

Iron Men (3rd) v Chasers (12th)

Slugs (4th) v Isotopes (11th)

Norwich (6th) v Bits & Bytes (14th)

Riverkings (7th) v RBIs (10th)

Lollygaggers (9th) v Maltsters (13th)
