Sunday’s early MLB games: Seeking that first win

by Matt Smith

As is typically the case on Sundays, all MLB games but for the ESPN Sunday Night game are being played in the daytime in North America.  That makes them a perfect way for us in Britain to unwind at the end of the weekend.

18.05. Chicago White Sox at Cleveland (Danks – Masterson)
18.05. Detroit at NY Yankees (Scherzer – Hughes)
18.07. Minnesota at Toronto (Blackburn – Cecil)
18.10. Milwaukee at Cincinnati (Wolf – Arroyo)
18.10. NY Mets at Florida (Dickey – Vazquez)
18.35. Atlanta at Washington (Hudson – Zimmermann)
18.35. Houston at Philadelphia (Norris – Oswalt) * BBC 5 Live Sports Extra
18.40. Baltimore at Tampa Bay (Britton – Davis)
19.05. Boston at Texas (Buchholz – Harrison)
19.10. LA Angels at Kansas City (Kazmir – Chen)
19.15. San Diego at St. Louis (Moseley – Garcia)
19.20. Pittsburgh at Chicago Cubs (Ohlendorf – Garza)
20.10. Arizona at Colorado (Saunders – Chacin)
21.05. Seattle at Oakland (Fister – Gonzalez)

Nine teams are still looking for their first win of the season, including the Red Sox, Rays, Twins and Brewers.  Boston have conceded 21 runs in their first two games against the Rangers, a tally that even the Red Sox’s much-heralded batting lineup couldn’t counter.  Meanwhile the Cleveland Indians have been pounded for 23 runs by the improved White Sox, with Gordon Beckham in particularly shining after a difficult sophomore season in 2010.

Javier Vazquez and Matt Garza make their debuts for the Marlins and Cubs respectively.  Vazquez is looking to rebound after a disastrous year with the Yankees, while Garza had an awful time in Spring Training.  Everyone likes to state that spring stats don’t matter and Garza will be hoping that’s true.

Houston have had the misfortune to be paired with the Phillies to start the season.  After facing Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee in their first two games, they now match up with their former ace Roy Oswalt in BBC 5 Live Sports Extra’s game of the day.  Nat Coombs and Josh Chetwynd will be on air from 18.00, giving them plenty of time to discuss all of the action from the opening days of the season and to preview the game.

Wade Davis recently signed a contract extension with the Rays and he’s tasked with helping his team to their first win of 2011 today.  The Oakland A’s Gio Gonzalez has a similar job as Seattle have won the opening two games of their series.

All of these games are available to watch live via the MLB.TV subscription at MLB.com.  BBC 5 Live Sports Extra is broadcasting the Astros-Phillies game from 18.00 on digital radio. ESPN America is not showing any of the early games today, although they will be broadcasting the Giants-Dodgers game live from 1 a.m.  The full schedule for today’s games can be found on MLB.com.
