There are five games on Saturday due to begin before midnight UK time. 

They include the latest instalment in the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry, an NL East battle between the Phillies and Braves, and the first game of a double-header between the Rangers and Orioles.

18.10. NY Yankees at Boston (Ivan Nova – Clay Buchholz) * ESPN America

The Red Sox snapped their six-game losing streak by beating the Yankees 9-6 yesterday and earning their first win of the season.  Both teams will be looking for strong outings by their starting pitchers after Phil Hughes and John Lackey struggled yesterday.  Bartolo Colon did a decent job in mop-up duty for the Yankees with 4.1 innings after Hughes was knocked out after just 2, while Aceves, Jenks, Bard and Papelbon worked an inning each for the Red Sox. 

Nova impressed in Spring Training and earned a win in his first start of the season against the Twins.  In contrast, Buchholz was launched for four home runs by the Rangers in his previous performance.

18.10. Philadelphia at Atlanta (Roy Oswalt – Brandon Beachy)

The Braves took the series opener yesterday by jumping on the seemingly untouchable Cliff Lee.  Atlanta scored six runs on ten hits and Lee left the mound after just 3.1 innings.  However, the strength of the Phillies this season is that they can follow a bad start like that by sending a top pitcher out the next day, in this case Roy Oswalt.  Both Oswalt and Beachy pitched six solid innings in their first games of the season. 

21.10. Tampa Bay at Chicago White Sox (Wade Davis – Philip Humber)

The Rays finally got some good news with their 9-7 victory over the White Sox last night.  The win came on a strange day for Tampa Bay as star slugger Manny Ramirez surprisingly announced his retirement after “an issue” with MLB’s drug programme.  That had capped off a pretty miserable run of bad news so their stunning come-from-behind win yesterday, scoring five runs in the top of the ninth, was all the more impressive.

That win evened the four-game series at one win each.  Wade Davis and the rest of the Rays’ pitching staff will attempt to buck the trend today by nullifying a White Sox offence that leads the Majors in runs scored (52).

21.10. Kansas City at Detroit (Bruce Chen – Phil Coke)

In his first home at-bat as a Tiger, new recruit Victor Martinez hit a three-run double to send his team on its way to a 5-2 win over the Royals yesterday.  Kansas City have started the season well and they out-hit Detroit in the opener (11 to 10).  We have a pair of lefties on the mound today.  Chen gave up five runs, including three homers, in a windy start against the Angels last Sunday, while Coke makes his season debut as a starter following a couple of appearances out of the bullpen.

21.35. Texas at Baltimore (Colby Lewis – Zach Britton)

The Rangers and Orioles will play a double-header at Camden Yards today as yesterday’s game was postponed due to rain.  Lewis and Britton were originally the scheduled starters for the series opener and it looks as though they will be kept in that role today, with Matt Harrison and Jake Arrieta pitching in the second game.
