BaseballGB Fantasy League 2011: Week Five

BgbFantasyHeadlineWelcome to our weekly round-up of the BaseballGB Fantasy League competition.  This is a mixed Head-2-Head league involving BGB writers and readers.

There are fourteen teams who pair up in different combinations each week, making for seven match-ups in any given week. The teams battle over twelve statistical categories, gaining one point for each category they win. 
 
All the points are carried over into the season league table at the end of the weekly match-ups. The top six teams with the most points at the end of the fantasy season will go on to the playoffs during the last three weeks of September.
 
It is time to look back at the past week in the BaseballGB fantasy league. In a big week for pitchers, which teams benefitted from the two no-hitters thrown and several other close no-hit bids?

The Angels charged to the top of the standings with a 10-0 thrashing of SWAT. Stevenston were comfortably ahead in most of the offensive categories, with Adrian Gonzalez and the now injured Vernon Wells each belting a hat-trick of homers. The pitching staff was just as dominant, collecting eight wins and putting up a miserly ERA and a sub-1.00 WHIP thanks to Scherzer, Floyd, CJ Wilson and Zambrano. Francouer and Gallardo were the best SWAT performers in what was an otherwise forgettable week.

Iron Men now have the same record as Redbacks after defeating them 8-3. Iron Men’s hitters took five categories thanks to the power of Aviula, Bruce and Rios and the speed of Hanley and Kinsler. The pitching staff were winless, but Perez, Valverde and League collected seven saves. Carlos Lee and Maicer Izturis helped Redbacks take average, while the rotation notched six wins and took ERA thanks to the Atlanta duo of Jurrjens and Hudson.

JJ’s hitters swept the offensive categories as Beck ‘Nams beat the Vendors 8-3. Jeter and Ibanez finally got going, while Konerko also hit a pair of homers. The AL East trio of Price, Shields and Buchholz helped the rotation take wins, while Adams chipped in with a win and two holds. The Vendors benefitted from Verlander’s no-hitter, helping them take strikeouts, ERA and WHIP. Bumgarner and Nolasco also had great weeks.

The Bet are playing .500 fantasy baseball after defeating daebhid2 8-3, with the hitters and pitchers each taking four categories. Prado and Rasmus were the pick of the hitters, while the dynamic duo of Halladay and Lincecum were the difference in wins, ERA and WHIP and Bard collected three holds. Dave had speed from Ellsbury and took saves and strikeouts thanks to Farnsworth and the trio of Lester, De La Rosa and Colon.

The Stuff continue their good form, getting the better of my Isotopes 7-4. Chris was kicking himself for leaving Liriano on the bench during his no-hitter, but his hitters made up for it, taking five categories thanks to Lind, Holliday and Teixeira. Aside from Liriano, four relievers collected a total of six saves, while Hamels and Haren also had very nice weeks. The NL West trio of Kershaw, Hudson and Chacin helped me take wins, strikeouts and ERA, as well as WHIP by a hair – the second straight week Chris has lost this category by a fraction of a point.

Bonestalkers came out on top against the Yankees, winning 7-4. BJ Upton, Jose Reyes and Zobrist all had big weeks, while four relievers combined for six saves. Garcia’s near no-hitter helped Bonestalkers take strikeouts and ERA. The Yankees had plenty of runs and power from Granderson, Beltran and Justin Upton, while Felix Hernandez and Lowe, who also had a decent no-hit bid, helped take wins and WHIP.

We finish with a narrow win for the Sox over the Chasers. Matt’s hitters took four categories thanks to Carlos Pena, Ortiz and Stubbs, but the Sox’s pitching staff made the difference. Morrow, Cahill, Wandy Rodriguez and McClellan combined for four wins as well as stingy ERA and WHIP numbers, while Storen chipped in with a win and two saves.
