BaseballGB Fantasy League 2011: Week Ten

BgbFantasyHeadlineWelcome to our weekly round-up of the BaseballGB Fantasy League competition. This is a mixed Head-2-Head league involving BGB writers and readers.

There are fourteen teams who pair up in different combinations each week, making for seven match-ups in any given week. The teams battle over twelve statistical categories, gaining one point for each category they win.

All the points are carried over into the season league table at the end of the weekly match-ups. The top six teams with the most points at the end of the fantasy season will go on to the playoffs during the last three weeks of September.

We are now 10 weeks into the BaseballGB fantasy league. Which teams are finding their form and which managers are battling to stay in the playoff chase?

We start with the week’s biggest winners, Iron Men, who defeated Beck ‘Nams 10-1. JJ’s team put up fairly decent numbers, but it was going to be an uphill struggle when your opponent has Prince Fielder, who hit six homers and drove in 13 all by himself as part of a sweep of offensive categories. Zimmermann and Marcum helped the pitchers take ERA and WHIP. JJ had a four-homer week from Konerko while Price and Jonathan Sanchez racked up the strikeouts.

The Yankees slugged their way to a 9-3 win against SWAT, taking five offensive categories behind Granderson and Butler, while Cain and King Felix each had a win and 11 strikeouts. Marmol, Soria and Salas collected five saves for SWAT, while five players combined for seven steals.

The Angels got four category wins from their hitters and pitchers in an 8-3 win over the Bet. Adrian Gonzalez, Markakis and Delmon Young were the pick of the hitters, while Tommy Hanson won twice, collected 20 strikeouts and, with help from Cliff Lee and Scherzer, took ERA and WHIP. Boesch, Youkilis and Smoak gave the Bet plenty of power and RBIs, while Ogando and Halladay pitched very well.

The Stuff’s pitching staff made the difference in the 7-4 win against Bonestalkers. Hamels and Liriano’s near no-hitter helped take wins and strikeouts, while the bullpen of K-Rod, Santos, Crow and Isringhausen took care of saves and holds. Seven different hitters combined for 11 homers, with Longoria and Lind the pick of the bunch. Bonestalkers had speed from Reyes and CarGo, while Dempster was the pick of the pitchers.

It was a matchup of two halves as the Sox got the better of my Isotopes 6-5. The Sox hitters swept the offensive categories behind Kemp, Braun and McCutchen. My pitchers took five out of six categories, with Daniel Hudson and Chacin the pick of the starters and Axford, Madson and Bailey combining for six saves. A lack of holds for Balfour, not helped by Oakland’s losing streak, proved the difference in the matchup.

The Vendors and Chasers couldn’t be separated, finishing 6-6. Pedroia and Beltre helped the Vendors take average and runs, while Melky Cabrera stole two bases. Clippard picked up three holds while Verlander, Bumgarner and Beckett helped take ERA and WHIP. The Chasers had plenty of power and RBIs from Tulo and Big Papi while Greinke and Cueto led the staff to take wins and strikeouts and Gregg and Kimbrel had the edge in saves.

Another matchup, another tie, as Redbacks and daebhid2 finished all square at 6-6. Again, the offensive and pitching categories were shared evenly. Cuddyer was the top Redbacks hitter while the bullpen of Papelbon, Venters and League combined for five saves and two holds. Ellsbury scored 10 runs for Dave, while McCann and Dunn each homered twice. Lester won twice and made the difference in strikeouts and WHIP.

    Very close match-up against my conqueror from last years final but this time I just managed to edge it. Beginning to feel a bit like i’m on a DiMaggio chasing streak…still unbeaten this season,that’s 10 matches! Can the Sox keep it going for another week? The Stress is getting too much for me!
