BaseballGB Fantasy League 2011: Week Thirteen

BgbFantasyHeadlineWelcome to our weekly round-up of the BaseballGB Fantasy League competition. This is a mixed Head-2-Head league involving BGB writers and readers.

There are fourteen teams who pair up in different combinations each week, making for seven match-ups in any given week. The teams battle over twelve statistical categories, gaining one point for each category they win.

All the points are carried over into the season league table at the end of the weekly match-ups. The top six teams with the most points at the end of the fantasy season will go on to the playoffs during the last three weeks of September.

Week 13 in the BaseballGB fantasy league saw a lot of very close matchups. Which teams were able to claim victories and which teams fell just short?

We begin with the biggest win of the week, as Dave’s side defeated SWAT 7-4 in a very tight matchup. The speed of Gardner and Davis and the average and OPS of Beckham and McCann helped Dave have a narrow advantage offensively, while Lester, Baker and Nathan helped take wins, holds, ERA and WHIP. SWAT had power and RBIs from Cabrera, while Marmol collected a win, a save and seven vital strikeouts.

The Sox gradually increased their lead at the top with a 7-5 win against JJ’s Beck ‘Nams. The Sox took five out of six offensive categories thanks to monster weeks from Aramis Ramirez and Andrew McCutchen. Wandy Rodriguez, Morrow and Masterson helped take wins and ERA. JJ had plenty of speed from Utley, Bourn and Bay, while the bullpen of Capps and Adams took care of saves and holds and Sabathia and Price racked up the strikeouts.

 My pitching staff made the difference in a 6-4 win against Bonestalkers, taking five categories and finishing level in the other. Ervin Santana and Carpenter were the pick of my starters, while Bastardo, Bailey and Axford gave me the edge in saves. Berkman, four-homer week made the difference in RBIs. CarGo, Reyes and Tejada helped Bonestalkers take four offensive categories.

The Angels just got the better of the Yankees 5-4 in a tight matchup. In the end the power and run production of Bautista and Juan Pierre helped Stevenston take four offensive categories, while Lee, Scherzer and CJ Wilson all had double-digit strikeouts. The Yankees took four pitching categories behind Rivera, Street, Thornton and Robertson while Luebke, Cain and Tomlin helped take ERA and WHIP.

The Bet squeezed past Iron Men 5-4, with Lincecum, Halladay, Ogando and Bard taking ERA, WHIP and holds. Rasmus provided RBIs while Helton and Boesch made the difference in average. Iron Men had runs and speed from Hanley Ramirez and Kinsler while Garza and Vogelsong racked up the strikeouts.

The Vendors and Redbacks couldn’t be separated, finishing 6-6. The Vendors had the better of the offensive categories thanks to Nelson Cruz, Melky Cabrera and Beltre while Verlander, Nolasco and Sipp helped take wins and holds. Redbacks took four pitching categories behind Papelbon, League and Jurrjens.

The Chasers and the Stuff also finished all square, this time 5-5. Six different pitchers won games for the Stuff, with Billingsley and Liriano the pick of the bunch. Peralta and Phillips made the difference in runs and average. Tulo, Hamilton and Pena all hit three homers for the Chasers had homers and gave them the edge in RBIs. Gio Gonzalaez won both his starts, striking out 16 while Kimbrel, Feliz and Gregg combined for seven saves.

    Seriously, those 15 HR and 46 RBI (come ON!) were kind of wasted against my Mets impressionists…

    I know the feeling JJ. It’s been a long hard struggle so far this season for my Chasers. A 5-5 draw from last week’s match-up seemed like a victory considering how my team has played of late. I still have (some) faith, though!
