BaseballGB Fantasy League 2011: Week Fifteen

by Mark George

BgbFantasyHeadlineWelcome to our weekly round-up of the BaseballGB Fantasy League competition. This is a mixed Head-2-Head league involving BGB writers and readers.

There are fourteen teams who pair up in different combinations each week, making for seven match-ups in any given week. The teams battle over twelve statistical categories, gaining one point for each category they win.

All the points are carried over into the season league table at the end of the weekly match-ups. The top six teams with the most points at the end of the fantasy season will go on to the playoffs during the last three weeks of September.

The All Star break meant a shorter week for the managers in the BaseballGB fantasy league and the 20 inning minimum rule scrapped for a week. But which teams would be taking advantage and which sides would be cursing the four-day matchup?

We begin with a big win for SWAT, who slugged their way to a 10-2 victory over Bonestalkers. Adam Jones homered twice and the Washington duo of Ramos and Espinosa also hit well as SWAT swept the offensive categories. The pitching staff was roughed up, but did enough to take four categories thanks to Harrison, Kuroda, Hernandez, Soria, Salas and Johnson. Dempster and Garcia helped Bonestalkers take ERA and WHIP, while Zobrist provided runs and RBIs.

The Sox ran out 9-1 winners of the crunch matchup between the top two, leaving Chris cursing the shorter gameweek. Santana, Aramis Ramirez and Kemp were the top Sox hitters, while the pitching staff somehow racked up 48 strikeouts in four days and just took ERA and WHIP thanks to Morrow and Niese. New Brewer K-Rood won a game and made the difference in holds for the Stuff.

My team benefitted from the short week, defeating the Vendors 9-1 and sweeping the offensive categories. The now-injured Sizemore and Walker were the pick of my hitters, while Pence and Aybar stoles two bases each. Kershaw, Carpenter, Daniel Hudson and Ubaldo each won a game and helped take strikeouts and ERA. The Vendors had nice weeks from Pedroia and Melky Cabrera, while Wilson and Walden combined for three saves. The rotation failed to pick up a win, but Beckett’s excellent start made the difference in WHIP.

Iron Men’s hitters got the job done, taking five categories on the way to a 7-4 victory against the Chasers. Kinsler, Hanley Ramirez and Quentin helped take runs, homers, average and RBIs, while Bernadina stole two bases. Uehara picked up a hold and six strikeouts. Logan Morrison helped the Chasers take RBIs, Stubbs hit .556 and Gio Gonzalez and Greinke helped take wins, strikeouts and WHIP.

BD Yankees 13 2 12 0 0.25 0.71 3 1 44 0 3.7 1.02 7

The Yankees just got the better of the Bet 7-5 in a very tight matchup, as almost all of the categories could have gone either way. Murphy and Granderson helped the Yankees take runs, average and OPS, while Asdrubal Cabrera, Hart and Crisp won the reamining categories for the Bet. The Yankee pitchers made the difference, taking four categories thanks to Lewis, Luebke and Rivera as the Bet were handcuffed by only having one starter scheduled to pitch during the matchup.

Last, but not least, Beck ‘Nams defeated daebhid2 6-4. Torres and Bay racked up steals for JJ, while Ibanez heped take average and OPS. Sabathia picked up the only win of the matchup, striking out eight, as did Shields. Dave had runs and homers from Gardner, Infante and Ellsbury, while Nathan, Melancon and Farnsworth combined for four saves and a hold. Colon was the only starter to pitch for Dave, although he may wish he hadn’t bothered after a rough start.
