BaseballGB Fantasy League 2011: Week Sixteen

by Mark George

BgbFantasyHeadlineWelcome to our weekly round-up of the BaseballGB Fantasy League competition. This is a mixed Head-2-Head league involving BGB writers and readers.

There are fourteen teams who pair up in different combinations each week, making for seven match-ups in any given week. The teams battle over twelve statistical categories, gaining one point for each category they win.

All the points are carried over into the season league table at the end of the weekly match-ups. The top six teams with the most points at the end of the fantasy season will go on to the playoffs during the last three weeks of September.

Week 16 in the BaseballGB fantasy league saw a number of very close matchups as the race for the fantasy playoffs heats up. Which teams were able to eke out a win?

We begin with the only team to manage eight category wins, as my Isotopes slugged their way to an 8-3 win against JJ’s Beck ‘Nams. Montero, Valencia and Berkman did most of the damage while Kershaw had a nice week and Axford, Bailey, Madson and Bastardo each collected a pair of saves. Once again JJ’s pitching trio of Sabathia, Shields and Price took care of ERA and WHIP, while Adams and Mike Dunn combined for four holds.

BD Yankees 33 9 39 5 0.28 0.87 3 2 30 1 4 1.31 7

The Yankees defeated Iron Men 7-4 thanks to a sweep of offensive categories. Justin Upton was the clear star of the show with 11 RBIs, while the walking trade rumour that is Carlos Beltran also had a nice week. Vogelsong, Weaver and Garza were all in excellent form for Iron Men and Gaby Sanchez hit three homers.

Pretzel Vendors 26 3 33 4 0.33 0.85 4 5 47 2 4.1 1.13 7

The Vendors took five offensive categories to defeat SWAT 7-5. The Texas duo of Cruz and the now injured Beltre swung hot bats, as did Pedroia and Melky Cabrera. Bumgarner won both his starts, while Beckett and Verlander were also in good form. SWAT had power from Adam Jones and Swisher, while Galllardo and Worley were the pick of the starters and the very impressive bullpen did not allow an earned run.

Offense was the name of the game again as the Chasers took five out of six categories on the way to a 6-3 win against Bonestalkers, with Tulo, Uggla and Hamilton all in good form. Young Reyes and the now injured Cargo hit well for Bonestalkers, with Garcia helping win ERA and WHIP and Nunez and Hanrahan combining for four saves.

The Sox just got the better of the Bet in a pretty close matchup. Rollins and Braun gave the Sox the edge in power and speed and Masterson was masterful on the mound to help take strikeouts, ERA and WHIP. Youk and Asdrubal Cabrera were the Bet’s top hitters, while Bard and Romero helped win holds and WHIP.

Another matchup, another 6-5 win, this time for the Stuff against Redbacks. Peralta, Longoria and Morse gave Chris a big homer and RBI advantage, while Hamels, Isringhausen and Santos took care of wins and saves. Redbacks racked up 11 steals, including five from Bonifacio, while Freeman, Carlos Lee and Stanton helped take runs and average. The Redback bullpen did not allow an earned run also also helped nick WHIP by 0.01.

I feel lucky to have won my match-up after making a complete horlicks of my roster most of the week.

I somehow left two starting pitchers on the bench when they were pitching, quickly nabbed the best option available on Friday for a Saturday start because it looked like I might miss the innings pitched minimum, that pitcher (David Huff) then had his start rained out and I just squeeked over the limit.

Luckily I got some strong batting performances otherwise I would have been deservedly hammered!
