BaseballGB Fantasy League 2011: Week Eighteen

BgbFantasyHeadlineWelcome to our weekly round-up of the BaseballGB Fantasy League competition. This is a mixed Head-2-Head league involving BGB writers and readers.
 
There are fourteen teams who pair up in different combinations each week, making for seven match-ups in any given week. The teams battle over twelve statistical categories, gaining one point for each category they win.

All the points are carried over into the season league table at the end of the weekly match-ups. The top six teams with the most points at the end of the fantasy season will go on to the playoffs during the last three weeks of September.

We are now in the dog days of August, but which teams are still going strong in the BaseballGB fantasy league?

We begin with the week’s biggest win, as the Yankees swept the offensive categories on the way to a 9-2 victory against Bonestalkers. Castro, Avila and Granderson were the three big hitters, while King Felix, Cain and Luebke racked up the strikeouts. Putz and Nunez helped Bonestalkers nick saves, while Dempster made the difference in ERA.

Another sweep of offensive categories saw Iron Men defeat Redbacks 8-4. Fielder, Quentin and Pagan all had big weeks, while Valverede, Garza and Vogelsong helped take saves and strikeouts. Papelbon (two wins), League (two saves) and Venters (two holds) helped Redbacks take four pitching categories.

Margaret’s pitchers took four categories as the Bet defeated daebhid2 7-2. Ricky Romero won both his starts, while Lincecum helped take strikeouts, WHIP and ERA. Asdrubal Cabrera and Corey Hart each had big weeks with the bat. Dave took average and OPS thanks to Infante (before his injury) and Ellsbury, but it was a rough week for the pitching staff.

The Stuff’s hitters swept the offensive categories as they defeated my Isotopes 7-4, with Holliday (four homers), Morse and Iannetta doing a lot of the damage and a great start from Hamels making the difference in WHIP. Ervin Santana won both his starts for the Isotopes, while Axford, Bailey and Madson each had a save.

The Chasers took four pitching categories on the way to a 6-3 win against the table-topping Sox. In a very tight matchup, Kimbrel and Feliz made the difference in saves and Kennedy and Greinke helped nick strikeouts. Uggla, Sandoval, Tulo and V-Mart all had big weeks with the bat. The Sox had runs and speed from Braun and Rollins, while Marshall had three holds.

The Vendors got the better of Beck ‘Nams 6-4, with the pitching staff taking five categories. The Detroit duo of Verlander and Fister each picked up a win, as did Walden, who also made the difference in saves. Votto, Pedroia and Jennings helped win average. JJ had nice weeks from Bay, Bourn and the now-injured Headley, while Adams picked up a save and a hold.

SWAT edged a close matchup against the Angels, winning 6-5. The pitching staff took five categories thanks to Kuroda, Worley and Gallardo, while Marmol had four saves and Espinosa and Gordon took runs. The Angels had offense from Rios, Pierre and Zimmerman and Zambrano won both his starts.

The week saw a trade, as the Chasers and Bet swapped Feliz and Bard. Will any more deals be made before the league deadline of August 14?
