BaseballGB Fantasy League 2011: Week Twenty

BgbFantasyHeadlineWelcome to our weekly round-up of the BaseballGB Fantasy League competition. This is a mixed Head-2-Head league involving BGB writers and readers.

There are fourteen teams who pair up in different combinations each week, making for seven match-ups in any given week. The teams battle over twelve statistical categories, gaining one point for each category they win.

All the points are carried over into the season league table at the end of the weekly match-ups. The top six teams with the most points at the end of the fantasy season will go on to the playoffs during the last three weeks of September.

It’s crunch time in the BaseballGB fantasy league, as with just two weeks of the regular fantasy season left only one side has booked its place to play for the championship. Which team has made it to the playoffs and which teams are fighting to confirm their places in the top six?

We begin with the week’s biggest winners, as Matt’s Chasers defeated cellar dwellers daebhid2 11-1. V-Mart, Tulo and Hamilton helped the offense complete a sweep, while Cueto, Greinke and Gio Gonzalez helped take wins, strikeout, ERA and WHIP. New acquisition Bard had three holds and Kimbrel collected three saves. Nathan, Melancon and Farnsworth combined for five saves for Dave and Ellsbury was the pick of his hitters.

The Angels gave their playoff hopes a huge boost with a 10-1 win over Beck ‘Nams which also included a sweep of offensive categories. Zimmerman, Bautista and Kendrick all had big weeks with the bat, while each of the Angels’ five starters picked up a win and the Cincinnati duo of Cordero and Chapman took care of saves and holds. Beck ‘Nams actually put up fairly decent numbers, and will feel a little hard done by to only take one category – holds – thanks to Uehara, Fuentes, Capps, Adams and Mike Dunn. Price and Gee also pitched well, while Konerko and Jeter were the pick of the hitters.

The Stuff are closer to securing a playoff place after defeating the Vendors 9-1, taking five offensive and four pitching categories. Teixeira, Phillips, Longoria and Lind provided power and RBIs, while Hellickson was the pick of the starters and Isringhausen picked up the only save of the matchup. Jennings had five steals for the Vendors, while Votto also had a nice week and the Detroit duo of Verlander and Fister each won their starts.

The Super Sox have lived up to their name, confirming a playoff place with a 9-3 win over Bonestalkers. Braun, Aramis Ramirez and McCutchen provided a lot of offense, while Morrow and Wandr Rodriguez were the pick of the starters. Congratulations to Kev for a job very well done – now he can concentrate on trying to gain a first-week playoff bye by finishing the season in the top two. CarGo and Martin gave Bonestalkers the edge in RBIs and OPS while Putz, Nunez and Hanrahan each had a save.

A sweep of offensive categories helped SWAT defeat the Bet 8-3. Gordon, Adam Jones, Choo and Miguel Cabrera did most of the damage, while Gallardo and Niemann made the difference in strikeouts and WHIP. The Bet took wins, saves and ERA thanks to Romero, Zimmermann, Bell and Feliz, while Soto, Maybin and Prado were the Bet’s best hitters.

There was some great pitching in this matchup for both teams, but the Yankees ended up 7-5 winners against Redbacks. Nova won twice for the Yankees, while Cain, Lewis, Bedard and Luebke helped take strikeouts and ERA. Chipper, Granderson, Cano, Butler and Avila all helped take average and OPS. Redbacks had great offense from Molina, Stanton and Hunter but despite some very good pitching, only took one category – WHIP – thanks to Tim Hudson and Stauffer.

The last matchup of the week saw my Isotopes squeeze past Iron Men 6-5. Walker and Lawrie made the difference in runs, average and OPS, while Axford, Madson, Bailey and Bastardo combined for six saves and three holds. Holland and Jimenez racked up strikeouts, but were both hit hard. Iron Men had the edge in homers, RBIs and steals thanks to Fielder, Kinsler and Pagan while Marcum, Weaver, Beach and Vogelsong comfortably took ERA and WHIP.

Play-offs here we come!

So the Sox have confirmed their playoff place, with the Stuff surely favourites to join them soon. My Isotopes are now half a game behind Iron Men, while the Yankees are half a game back in fifth. There’s an almighty scrap on for the final championship playoff place, with the Chasers, Vendors, Angels and SWAT all in with a chance. It looks as if daebhid2 will miss out on the consolation playoffs, as will Bonestalkers, unless they can overtake Beck ‘Nams.

Here are the Week 21 matchups:

Sox (1st) v Redbacks (11th)
Stuff (2nd) v Beck ‘Nams (12th)
Iron Men (3rd) v SWAT (9th)
Isotopes (4th) v Chasers (6th)
Yankees (5th) v daebhid2 (14th)
Vendors (7th) v Bet (10th)
Angels (8th) v Bonestalkers (13th)

My Chasers were absolutely nowhere just a few weeks ago so I’m quite shocked that I’m in the playoff hunt. Need a good week against the Isotopes to keep my charge going.
