BST guide to this week’s early MLB games: Eleven games to enjoy

by Matt Smith

CovHlSqAfter a slow start to the week, there are eleven games scheduled to begin before midnight UK time this working week.

Wednesday should be an especially entertaining evening of live baseball as several contenders finish up a three-game series with a day-game.

One of those teams is the Philadehphia Phillies and, providing they stay on their standard scheduled, we should get to see both Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee in consecutive early game action this week.

In the American League, Boston have lost five games in a row and, after a day off on Monday, have a two-game series at home against the Toronto Blue Jays before starting a potentially crucial series against the Rays. The second of Boston’s two games against the Blue Jays will be an early start.

All times are in BST.

Wednesday 14 September

17.05. Florida at Atlanta (Nolasco – Delgado)
17.35. St. Louis at Pittsburgh (Jackson – Morton)
18.35. Toronto at Boston (Romero – Lackey)
19.05. Philadelphia at Houston (Halladay – Happ)

20.35. LA Angels at Oakland (Weaver – Harden)
20.45. San Diego at San Francisco (Latos – Lincecum)
21.10. Minnesota at Kansas City (Hendriks – Hochevar)

Detroit and Chicago, St. Louis, Atlanta and the Los Angeles Angels are all finishing up important three-game series with an early start on Wednesday.

Exciting pitching prospect Randall Delgado is expected to make a start against the Blue Jays, while Dylan Axelrod will make his first Major League start for the White Sox.

There are two excellent pitching match-ups in the offing from the West Coast as Jered Weaver matches up with Rich Harden in Oakland, and Mat Latos makes a start against Tim Lincecum in San Francisco.

Thursday 15 September

18.10. Washington at NY Mets (Lannan – Capuano)
19.35. Florida at Philadelphia (Sanchez – Lee)

We have two games from the NL East on Thursday.

ESPN America isn’t showing either game, but they are showing repeats of the Cleveland-Texas and New York Yankees-Seattle Wednesday Night games during the evening.

Friday 16 September

19.20. Houston at Chicago Cubs (Rodriguez – Garza)

We end the working week – and start the weekend – with a Cubs home game from Wrigley Field.  Neither side has exactly set the world on fire this season, but Wandy Rodriguez and Matt Garza are two good pitchers so we could have a decent pitching match-up on our hands.

All of these games are available to watch live via the MLB.TV subscription at MLB.com.  The early games being shown on ESPN America are highlighted above, while the ESPN/ESPN America schedule can be found on their website.  The full schedule for this week’s games can be found on MLB.com.
