Most teams are following the frantic trade deadline activity yesterday with a night game today, meaning that we only have three live games during the British evening. 

The first game sees Derek Lowe facing his former team at Turner Field.  He needs his offense to bounce back from being shutout by Jason Schmidt and the Dodger bullpen in the first game of the series yesterday.  That bullpen included L.A.’s new recruit George Sherrill, who struck out three and walked one during his single inning of work.  The Braves may have Adam LaRoche in their lineup tonight as he returned to Atlanta in a deadline day move.  How much he will help is up for debate.

The second game brings together a team who unexpectedly made a big deadline move and a team that unexpectedly did not.  The White Sox went back to Jake Peavy after they agreed a trade with the Padres earlier in the season and this time he decided to swap San Diego for Chicago.  He won’t help them in the near future as he is still recovering from an ankle injury, but he would round out a formidable rotation if he is fully fit during September and, possibly, in the playoffs.  John Danks is another key part of that rotation and he will start for the White Sox in tonight’s game.

The Yankees have confidence in their current roster and judging on their excellent recent form that confidence is not misplaced.  However, GM Brian Cashman was actively looking for pitching help (most notably in Jarrod Washburn who landed with the Tigers) which suggests that they are an injury or two away from causing a bit of panic in the Bronx.  One man they can’t afford to lose is A.J. Burnett: he has been in dominating form of late. Another strong start tonight by him could well see the Yankees level the series, after the White Sox pounded Sergio Mitre and Alfredo Aceves for nine runs in a 10-5 loss last night.

Finally, the Rays won the first game of the four-game series against the Royals last night on the back of a strong seven-inning outing by David Price.  Fellow young starter Jeff Niemann will attempt to follow that performance by earning his tenth win of the season.  The 6 ft 9 righty has been a terrific addition to the Rays’ rotation this year.  He took a loss last time out against the Blue Jays, but was impressive in his previous two starts before then (a complete game shutout against the A’s and an eight-inning two-run outing against the White Sox).  The Royals counter with the well-travelled man from Panama: Bruce Chen.  He’s making his way back from Tommy John surgery and hasn’t completed more than five innings in any of his last five starts.
