Title race heating up

by Mark George
BgbFantasyIt’s fantasy roundup time once again. The beauty of a head-to-head league is how quickly things can change. One week your bats are on fire, the next you’re relying on your pitchers to help you get back in the matchup.

Both of my teams in the two head-to-head leagues I play in had very different weeks with the bats, but how did the rest of the BaseballGB fantasy league get on?

There was a bit of an upset for SWAT, who managed a win over Warfare but it was a lot closer than most of us will have been expecting. Warfre’s bats, led by Pence, found some power so it was left to SWAT’s pitchers to save the day, despite high ERA and WHIP stats.

The ‘Cuse closed the gap at the top with a 7-3 win over Bonestalkers, sweeping the offensive categories thanks to Kendry Morales, Pujols and Carlos Lee.

My other head-to-head team had an awful offensive week, so it was a relief to see the Isotopes pick up a 10-2 win over the Chasers. To be fair to the Chasers, the score is harsh on a team which had a pretty damn good week. If it hadn’t been for Ryan Howard and John Danks, this matchup could easily have been a win for the Chasers.

A matchup of two halves for the stuff and the Bats, who tied 6-6. The Stuff took all the offensive categories thanks to Hanley and Holliday but the Bats took all the pitching categories thanks as the Stuff failed to meet their minumum innings requirement – down to Chris moving house leading to internet connection problems.

The Angels just got the better of the Gas 6-5. The Gas took five of the offensive categories thanks to Kubel and Cantu but the Angels pitched their way to the win behind Josh Johnson, Gavin Floyd and George Sherrill.

The Whos picked up a 6-4 win over the Typos. Both teams hit very well, but JJ just shaded it thanks to Adrian Gonzalez and Yadier Molina. Joe’s team pitched very well behind the formidable trio of Halladay, Lee and Buehrle.

Another close matchup saw the Giants edge the Bangers 5-4. Almost all of the Giants’ hitters were on fire, with the Bangers pitching well behind Wainwright and Ervin Santana.

The results leave SWA on top but the ‘Cuse are 1.5 games back. My Isotopes are just 2 games back, followed by the Stuff, Angels and Chasers.

The Bats are just outside the top playoff places, while the Giants and Bonestalkers are still very much in with a chance. The Whos, Typos and Bangers will be hoping to get hot down the stretch.

The next set of fixtures see SWAT face the Gas, the ‘Cuse taking on Tribal Warfare and my Isotopes facing the Bangers.

Thanks for the sympathy Mark, but no, you just plain hammered my Chasers this week! I’ve got to get moving again if I want to stay in the playoff hunt.

Picking up Nick Blackburn can safely go down as one of the worst decisions of the ’09 BGB Fantasy League. I even benched him after his first start of the week, when he gave up 4 ER in 1.2 innings, but decided that things couldn’t get worse and gave him another go. He repaid my faith by giving up 6 ER in 2.1 innings.

Doh! That lack of internet access cost me a 10-2 victory! Hopefully it won’t end up with me missing out on the playoffs…
