British Baseball history news

The BaseballSoftballUK website has published a report about the UK chapter of SABR’s AGM, which was held on Saturday.  The event included presentations on two exciting developments relating to the history of baseball in Britain.

The first is a project that has been discussed on Five in recent weeks.  The Marylebone Cricket club are in the early stages of planning an exhibition on the links between cricket and baseball.  The exhibition will initially be housed at Lords before visiting Australia, and the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown and it sounds like it will be well worth visiting.  Establishing links between the two sports would be a good way of selling baseball to cricket fans, many of whom are skeptical about its appeal.  The exhibition isn’t scheduled to open until March 2010, but it is worth keeping an eye on any developments in the meantime.

The second project should be with us in a much shorter space of time.  The SABR AGM attendees were treated to a premiere of an hour-long documentary about the roots of baseball that has been made by MLB.com.  Entitled ‘Baseball Discovered’, the documentary builds on work by SABR UK members to chart the history of the sport, looking back at other bat and ball games such as Stoolball and Ball-and-Trap.  BSUK states that the documentary will be available on MLB.com and ITunes soon, so keep an eye out for it.
