Gameday Audio Rewind

by Matt Smith

A couple of weeks ago, BaseballGB reader Drood highlighted the Gameday Audio Rewinds on MLB.com as being a very useful feature that baseball fans might be missing out on.

These Rewinds are published every day throughout the season and they provide a review lasting between ten and twenty-odd minutes of all of the games.  It is touted by MLB.com as being “an essential AM download, perfect for listening on your morning commute”.  Each game is covered in turn with commentary from a key moment or two picked out alongside the match stats and any relevant news about the two teams (who they play next, news of a player heading to the DL etc).  With so many games coming thick and fast during an MLB season, this is an excellent way to keep up to date with all the latest happenings.

The one sticking point I could see for British fans related to the time of day when the Rewinds are published.  If it’s put online just in time for New Yorkers to be able to download before they leave for work in the morning, that would mean us waiting until midday before it becomes available.  That’s fine if you can download it at work/uni/college/school, but in a lot of cases this isn’t possible.  Sure, you can listen to it when you get home, but that can be a long time to have to wait for an impatient MLB fan.

With this in mind, I thought I would conduct a bit of research to discover when the Rewinds usual appear on the MLB website.  Thankfully this task was made easy as you can subscribe to a podcast feed for the product.  Having added the feed to FeedDemon (which incidentally I’ve just started using and can highly recommend), I’ve been able to enjoy the show all week:

  • Sunday’s Rewind was published at 4.54 BST on Monday morning.
  • Monday’s Rewind published at 7.57 on Tuesday morning.
  • Tuesday’s Rewind published at 7.07 on Wednesday morning.
  • Wednesday’s Rewind was published at 7.16 on Thursday morning.
  • Thursday’s Rewind was published at 6.14 on Friday morning.
  • The Rewind for last night’s games appeared at 6.08 earlier today.

Obviously, the time it takes for MLB.com to put the Rewind together and put it out on the website can vary depending on how games are played and when they finish (for example, late games on the west coast will put the publishing time back a bit).  Still, the last few days have showed that generally the Rewind is available fairly early and, depending on when you have to set off in the morning, it’s more than possible that you will have the time to stick it on your mp3 player and catch up with all of the action from the previous night’s games as you’re travelling to work, or during your lunchtime break.

For more information, and the xml feed link, head over to the Podcast section on MLB.com and click on the Gameday Audio Rewind tab.  And if Fantasy baseball is more your thing, check out the Fantasy 411 show podcast at the same section.  Even for a part-time fantasy player like myself, Mike and Corey’s show is always entertaining.

MLB.com continues to provide numerous ways in which fans can follow the baseball season (on that note: I’ll be putting some thoughts together about the new features on Gameday over the next week or so).  Make sure you don’t miss out on any of them.
