All Star festivities

by Matt Smith

With the All Star break meaning that there are no other Major League games on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, I’ll be postponing my weekly guide to the week’s games until Wednesday evening.

However, MLB.com is serving up an All Star package of live multimedia content.  The Futures game and the Celebrity Softball game were broadcast live yesterday evening.  That leaves us with the following:

Monday 14th – First up we have the All Star batting practice session, which might be worth watching for a little while especially if you’ve never seen batting practice before and are curious as to what exactly the hitters work on.  The AL take their batting practice at 22.30 (BST) and the NL at 23.35.  Then there is the Home Run derby which begins at 01.00 on Tuesday morning over here.  Personally I find the whole contest gets a bit boring and at such an early hour, I’m not sure I’d be able to keep awake.  No doubt there will be a highlights package to enjoy after the event.

Tuesday 15th – We start with the Red Carpet show which is scheduled to run between 18.00 and 20.00 BST.  Lots of legends have been lined up to be part of the parade.  Finally we have the actual All Star game, coverage of which begins at 01.00 on Wednesday morning.  Most British fans, including myself, will be watching the coverage on Five instead though.

Existing MLB.tv fans get free access to the All Star package and it’s available for the equivalent of £1.50 (plus an overseas transaction fee depending on who you bank with) as a standalone product.  Full details can be found here and it is worth noting that you also get access to all Major League games played on Thursday, Friday and Saturday as part of the package.  So if you’ve ever thought about subscribing to MLB.tv, then this would be an excellent way to try it out at minimal cost.
