BGB Fantasy League round-up: Week One

by Mark George
BgbFantasyHeadlineWelcome to our weekly round-up of the BaseballGB Fantasy League competition.  This is a mixed Head-2-Head league involving BGB writers and readers.

There are fourteen teams who pair up in different combinations each week, making for seven match-ups in any given week. The teams battle over twelve statistical categories, gaining one point for each category they win.  All the points are carried over into the season league table at the end of the weekly match-ups. The top six teams with the most points at the end of the fantasy season will go on to the playoffs during the last three weeks of September.

SWAT were the victors in the inaugural BGB Fantasy League last year.  Will they retain their title in 2010, or will a new champion emerge?

Now the first full week of the MLB season is complete, it is time to take a look at which teams are off to hot starts and which teams are still finding their feet.

The first week has seen plenty of drama, with bids for no-hitters, extra-inning wins, rookies making a name for themselves and a couple of closers off to rocky starts, with Frank Francisco having temporarily lost his 9th inning role to Neftali Feliz already.

The stats leaderboards are also fun to look at at this early stage. Whoever thought Casey Janssen would be leading the Majors with three wins is a much smarter (or luckier!) person than me!

We begin with a matchup between two Croydon Pirates, as JJ’s Beck ‘Nams got off to a flying start with a 9-2 win over Oscar’s Yankee-heavy New Spaniards. Oscar’s team actually put up impressive numbers in many categories, but were outslugged by Pujols and Nelson Cruz. JJ’s closers also picked up six saves and even though a lot of the starters were roughed up, they still did just enough to take wins. Cano, Posada and Swisher were Oscar’s star hitters.

Last season’s champions SWAT* were handed an 8-3 defeat by the Angels in a close matchup. A three-homer week for Pedroia helped the Angels, who didn’t hit for average but took four out of six offensive categories. Roy Halladay and four saves from Jon Rauch also helped the pitching staff take four out of six. Derrek Lee, Utley and Rasmus were SWAT’s star hitters while Kuroda and Brett Anderson both pitched brilliantly.

The Super-Sox are also off to a winning start after an 8-3 victory over Bonestalkers in a matchup which was closer than the final score suggests. Granderson, Mauer and Beltre were the star Sox hitters, with Greinke, Floyd and Dempster all pitching well but failing to pick up a win. Longoria, Youkilis and Matsui all hit well for Bonestalkers, with Danks and Rivera the pick of the pitchers.

Another close matchup saw Grip It N Rip It get the better of the Chasers 7-5 thanks to power from Howard, speed from Rajai Davis and Lincecum’s arm. The Chasers fell just short, despite 8 RBIs from Polanco and a pair of great starts from Ubaldo Jiminez.

My Isotopes started the season with a 6-3 win over the Bats in a matchup which could have easily gone either way. Miguel Cabrera and Casey McGehee provided the power and Haren’s Ks and strong starts from Hudson and Billingsley helped the pitching staff. Kemp and Sandoval led the Bats’ hitters, with Weaver pitching well and rhe collection of closers notching four saves.

The Waves edged past the Stuff 6-5 thanks to excellent batting averages from Prado, Gutieerez and Hunter among others, while the bullpen’s five saves made up for a lack of wins. Carlos Quentin and Roy Oswalt, pitching for the winless Astros, were the pick of the Stuff’s roster.

Last, but by no means least, there was a 5-5 tie between Iron Men and Pretzel Vendors. The Vendors’ wins all came thanks to the offense of Morneau, Rollins and Holliday, while Iron Men’s pitching staff picked up four categories thanks to Sabathia and Wainwright.

So JJ leads the standings after one week, but things can change quickly in a week, which is what mkaes head-to-head leagues so much fun. Don’t forget to check your rosters as often as you can, use the DL for injured players and take a look at which free agents are off to hot starts.
