Welcome to our weekly round-up of the BaseballGB Fantasy League competition. This is a mixed Head-2-Head league involving BGB writers and readers.Â
There are fourteen teams who pair up in different combinations each week, making for seven match-ups in any given week. The teams battle over twelve statistical categories, gaining one point for each category they win. All the points are carried over into the season league table at the end of the weekly match-ups. The top six teams with the most points at the end of the fantasy season will go on to the playoffs during the last three weeks of September. SWAT were the victors in the inaugural BGB Fantasy League last year. Will they retain their title in 2010, or will a new champion emerge?
Â
The latest results in the BaseballGB fantasy league have made the standings look very interesting. Which managers had great weeks which made them look like tactical geniuses and which managers, like myself in another league, didn’t look so smart after dropping Dallas Braden before his perfect game? Read on to find out.Â

We start with another big win for Matt’s Chasers, who continued their good run of form against Bonestalkers with a 10-2 win. Bonestalkers struggled to hit for average, but took runs and holds thanks to Youkilis, Moylan and Clippard, who also won three games in a week. Matt had nice weeks from Fielder and McCutchen while Ubaldo Jimenez and Rich Harden led the pitching staff.

The Pretzel Vendors picked up a 7-2 win over the New Spaniards in another matchup which could have gone the other way due to a number of close categories. The Vendors had just enough offense thanks to a monster week from Ryan Braun and the pitching of David Price. The Spaniards had nice weeks from Swishers and Hughes.

There was yet another close matchup as Iron Men edged the Angels 7-5. The pitching of Wainwright and Wilson made the difference for Iron Men, while the Angels had plenty of offense from Rios and Teixeira.

Â
My Isotopes picked up a 7-5 win over Grip It n Rip It thanks to the bats, which came to life to take five out of six offensive categories. Ethier, Werth and McGehee were all in good form, but some stingy pitching frrom Rip It’s Baker and Harang made it a close matchup.

The last matchup saw the Bats get past SWAT 6-5, taking three hiting and pitching categories thanks to Victor Martinez and Cuddyer. SWAT had plenty of Ks from Kershaw, Garcia and Gallardo, but the deep pitching staff couldn’t take wins.

How things stand
Â
The standings show just how close the league is, with Beck ‘Nams still leading the way, 1.5 games ahead of Pretzel Vendors, 4 up on Iron Men and 5 ahead of the charging Chasers. The Angels are in 5th, 9.5 games back, just ahead of Rip It, Spaniards and Bonestalkers, who are all 10 back. My Isotopes and SWAT are both just half a game behind, with the Stuff 11 back, a game ahead of both the Bats and the Waves. The Sox are by no means out of it 13 games back.
Â
With the standings seeing so many teams bunched together, I’m sure we will see plenty of changes in next round up, possibly at the top as Iron Men take on Beck ‘Nams.
Very glad to see the Chasers finding a bit of form after a shaky first few weeks. Mind you, I got the benefit of several of my starters pitching twice over the 7 days, so I might experience the downside of that in this week’s match-up. That’s one of the intriguing parts of Head-2-Head play though.
Phew, a win at last albeit a very narrow one! After winning my first ever fantasy game I probably thought this fantasy malarky was easy but now finding myself rooted to the bottom of the table i know it’s anything but! Now if only my pitchers could get a few wins and my hitters could find a bit of power to go along with their average… aaagh this thing takes over your life!!!!
I’m in a state of shock at the Pretzel Vendors being so high up. Somehow my ragbag of pitchers are keeping me in every game. My hitting has been immense so far. It’ll never last, mark my words.
