Red Sox Review: Weeks Two and Three

The second week of the season has seen many ups and downs for the Red Sox after their hot start during the first week.

Throughout the second week the team has seen moments or brilliance as well as dominating the other teams but they have shown moments of hits that were poorly timed and a lack of being able to score runs at times.

Going into the season, there were worries by fans about the starting rotation, so far it seems that these worries were right.

Jackie Robinson Day was in the middle of the week and the Red Sox donned the famous number 42 in honour of Robinson. As a tribute to Robinson, the number 42 was retired across all of the Major League Baseball teams in 1997. Manager John Ferral also thinks that homosexuality should be just as accepted for a more diverse team.

The second week also saw the return of Koji Uehara who’s season started with two perfect innings. Each inning saw a pair of strikeouts, causing him to have his first win of the season and his first save of the season. A good start to his season considering that the end of the 2014 season wasn’t good and him just coming back from an injury.

During the series finale against the Orioles on Monday, Hanley Ramirez left the field during the 3rd inning due to an illness. Also during the series, David Ortiz received a one game suspension and a fine because he made contact with home plate umpire John Tumpane during a disagreement over a check-swing strike. Before leaving the field, Ortiz threw his bat and his elbow guard in frustration.

Going into the third week, the Red Sox have gone down one place in the power, they now stand at 4th.

The third week has many of the same problems for the team. Week three of the season also saw the team’s first series loss against the Rays. Prior to the week, the Red Sox had won series against the Yankees, Nationals and Phillies. They also split the four game series against the Orioles.

The starting rotation still continues to be a problem for the team, which now is something that needs to be addressed. One solution for this is for the rotation to develop some consistency as still, at times they have moments or pure brilliance.

Hanley Ramirez seems to be having a good April so far and is earning his money as he’s had eight homes runs up until Sunday 26th and was in second place in the league for scoring home runs. Two of the home runs came at the away game against the Orioles, where the Red Sox lost 17-8. Hopefully this form will continue for Ramirez going into May.

Going into the fourth week the Red Sox have dropped down to sixth place in the power rankings.

Red Sox Review: Week One

The first week of the season has had many highs for the Red Sox, including Mookie Betts, who has lived up to the hype created during Spring Training.

In the opening game against the Phillies, the Red Sox dominated and won 8-0. The impressive score was all down to home runs. Both Hanley Ramirez and Dustin Pedroia hit two homes run to show how strong the offensive is. Ramirez also hit a grand slam in the final inning to seal the first victory of the season. Betts was also among those to score a home run.

The first week had the added excitement of the age old rivalry between the Red Sox and the Yankees. The Red Sox came out on top as they won two of the games in the series. On Friday going into the small hours of Saturday, the game went into 16 innings and lasted 6 hours, 49 minutes, this was the longest game in franchise history and were back in the Yankee stadium a mere 11 hours later.

The highlight of the home opener was to have four time Super Bowl champion, Tom Brady of the New England Patriots throw out the first pitch. Brady’s talents are probably best left on the football field as the ball took a lucky bounce to reach David Ortiz.

Betts was definitely the star of the home opener against the Nationals. He hit a three – run homer, stole second base and to top it off he prevented Bryce Harper from scoring a home run.

Going into the second week, the Red Sox are ranked third in the power rankings and look to gain on their success. The second week will also see the return of Koji Uehara who was placed on the disabled list to a left hamstring strain.

Red Sox getting ready for new season

This is the first post in a new series. Charlotte Cooper will be following her Boston Red Sox’s fortunes over the course of the season here at BaseballGB.

With the first game of the 2015 season almost upon us, the pressure is on for the Boston Red Sox to make an impact and to make any last minute changes.

Many fan’s worries have been with the starting rotation as it was one of the weaknesses during last season. They went went from winning the World Series to having some of the worst stats in the league. The Red Sox were ranked last in hitting and to try and change this they spent a whopping $183 million on Pablo Sandoval and Hanley Ramirez.

Certainly the loss of Jon Lester, who decided not to sign with the team has had an impact. Lester would have been a good place for the Red Sox to start building their rotation.

One player in particular doesn’t have to bother about trying to make an impression. Mookie Betts continues to impress fans as he’s had more than enough extra base hits to make his name known and continues to amaze the crowds despite the season not starting yet. He is one of the players to keep an eye on when the season starts.

An interesting development for the team is that of Christian Vazquez who sustained an injury to his right elbow. At the moment it isn’t known how long he will be out for but on Monday he was placed on the 60 day disabled list.

This serves as a bit of a knock to the team as throughout the 2014 season, players such as Will Middlebrooks, Xander Bogaerts and Jackie Bradley Jr were plagued with injuries, which they were hoping to avoid this upcoming season.

The first game of the season will be away, against the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday 6th April at 3:05 PM (ET) (20.05 BST). Their home opener will be on 13th April against the Washington Nationals at the same time.
