Red Sox Review: Weeks Two and Three

by Charlotte Cooper

The second week of the season has seen many ups and downs for the Red Sox after their hot start during the first week.

Throughout the second week the team has seen moments or brilliance as well as dominating the other teams but they have shown moments of hits that were poorly timed and a lack of being able to score runs at times.

Going into the season, there were worries by fans about the starting rotation, so far it seems that these worries were right.

Jackie Robinson Day was in the middle of the week and the Red Sox donned the famous number 42 in honour of Robinson. As a tribute to Robinson, the number 42 was retired across all of the Major League Baseball teams in 1997. Manager John Ferral also thinks that homosexuality should be just as accepted for a more diverse team.

The second week also saw the return of Koji Uehara who’s season started with two perfect innings. Each inning saw a pair of strikeouts, causing him to have his first win of the season and his first save of the season. A good start to his season considering that the end of the 2014 season wasn’t good and him just coming back from an injury.

During the series finale against the Orioles on Monday, Hanley Ramirez left the field during the 3rd inning due to an illness. Also during the series, David Ortiz received a one game suspension and a fine because he made contact with home plate umpire John Tumpane during a disagreement over a check-swing strike. Before leaving the field, Ortiz threw his bat and his elbow guard in frustration.

Going into the third week, the Red Sox have gone down one place in the power, they now stand at 4th.

The third week has many of the same problems for the team. Week three of the season also saw the team’s first series loss against the Rays. Prior to the week, the Red Sox had won series against the Yankees, Nationals and Phillies. They also split the four game series against the Orioles.

The starting rotation still continues to be a problem for the team, which now is something that needs to be addressed. One solution for this is for the rotation to develop some consistency as still, at times they have moments or pure brilliance.

Hanley Ramirez seems to be having a good April so far and is earning his money as he’s had eight homes runs up until Sunday 26th and was in second place in the league for scoring home runs. Two of the home runs came at the away game against the Orioles, where the Red Sox lost 17-8. Hopefully this form will continue for Ramirez going into May.

Going into the fourth week the Red Sox have dropped down to sixth place in the power rankings.
