You Are the Scorer: Number 16

YouAreScorer

Scenario: During a plate appearance, the batter gets injured on a swing and has to be replaced. The replacement batter inherits a full count on entering the game.

As the official scorer, you must choose whether the original batter’s statistics or the new batter’s statistics will be affected, based on what the outcome is of the plate appearance. Which of the following is true?

A - A strike-out and a walk would be assigned to the original batter.
B – A strike-out would be charged to the original batter but a walk would be credited to the new batter.
C - A strike-out would be charged to the new batter but a walk would be credited to the original batter.
D – A strike-out and a walk would be assigned to the new batter.

Rule 10.15(b) states:
When a batter leaves the game with two strikes against him, and the substitute batter completes a strikeout, the official scorer shall charge the strikeout and the time at bat to the first batter. If the substitute batter completes the turn at bat in any other manner, including a base on balls, the official scorer shall score the action as having been that of the substitute batter.

Keeping Score Season

Today’s example looks at not only a different type of scorecard, but a different method of scoring.  In the traditional method of keeping score, a player’s progress around the bases is charted in isolation in one box.  However, the Reisner Scorekeeping method makes every square on the scorecard reflect the game situation during every at bat.  Continue reading

Baseball and Cricket scorekeeping

Keeping Score Season

As part of our Keeping Score Season, it always seemed like a good idea to compare the scorekeeping of baseball and cricket games.  The recent passing of the Bearded Wonder Bill Frindall made it all the more fitting.

For some reason, baseball and cricket are often set up as opposites, where you should like one and not the other.  That doesn’t make any sense to me.  They are both great sports so why not enjoy both.  Baseball and cricket compliment each other well.  Their similarities and differences are fascinating and the process of scoring games is a great example of this.  Continue reading

WBC: Ideas for Improvements

2009 looks set to be a great year for baseball, but it could also end in the sport being dealt a considerable blow.  The International Olympic Committee will decide in October which two sports should be added to the Games in 2016 and baseball’s reinstatement hangs in the balance.

Consequently, the World Baseball Classic (WBC) has taken on even more importance.  Baseball fans are not only hoping that the event in March will be a great success, they are also already considering what improvements could be made for the next staging of the tournament in 2013.  Continue reading

BaseballGB fantasy league now open!

BgbFantasyHello all,

As the title of this blog suggests, you can now join the FREE BaseballGB fantasy league if you would like to pit your wits against Matt, Joe, myself and other site regulars.

It doesn’t matter if you are an experienced fantasy baseball player or a beginner – all we ask is that you’re committed so we can all enjoy a high quality league!

We have already had a fantastic response to this league, so if you are interested in joining, don’t delay. You can email me at baseballfeedback@yahoo.co.uk and I’ll send you everything you need to enter.

As mentioned in my previous fantasy blogs, we’re aiming to get an even number of players so we can do a head to head league – for example my team plays Matt’s one week before facing off against another manager like Joe the following week.

There are 12 scoring categories we will be using:

For hitters:

  • batting average (AVG)
  • runs (R)
  • home runs (HR)
  • runs batted in (RBI)
  • stolen bases (SB)
  • on base percentage plus slugging percentage (OPS)

For pitchers:

  • wins (W)
  • saves (SV)
  • holds (H)
  • strikeouts (K)
  • earned run average (ERA)
  • walks and hits per inning pitched (WHIP)

Each team needs to field:

  • 1 catcher
  • 1 1st baseman
  • 1 2nd baseman
  • 1 shortstop
  • 1 3rd baseman
  • 1 centre fielder
  • 2 other outfielders – can be centrefielders as well if you want
  • 1 utility batter – any position

For pitchers there will be six slots you can use a day:

  • 2 starting pitchers
  • 2 relief pitchers
  • 2 slots for whatever sort of pitcher you want, starters or relievers

You will also have five bench spots which can be used on any combination of hitters and pitchers you like, and the DL spots where you can put injured players.

Still interested? Then email baseballfeedback@yahoo.co.uk and you can be a part of the BaseballGB league!

Scenario: The first batter of an inning strikes out. The second hits an inside-the-park home run. The third hits a double. The pitcher receives a signal to intentionally walk the fourth batter and, reluctanly, does so. The fifth batter connects for a 2-run triple. The sixth and seventh batters are struck out, which strands the runner at third.

As the official scorer, how many of the 3 runs do you charge as earned runs against the pitcher?

A – 0.
B – 1.
C – 2.
D – 3.

Answer:
 D – 3.

Rule 10.16 states:

MLB.TV Premium offers

The launch of this year’s MLB.TV subscription packages prompted joy and relief for many baseball fans. Joy because the news is always a much-anticipated sign that the new MLB season is not far away; relief because the prices remained at a very reasonable level.

That is not the end of the good news from MLB.com though.  In an attempt to make the MLB.TV Premium package all the more appealing, two special offers have been introduced: one of which should be available to British fans.  Continue reading
