Early MLB games this week: Barely one month to go

As Marty mentioned yesterday, it’s incredible to think that tomorrow marks the beginning of the final month of the regular season.  There have been countless great moments already and they have set up an exciting climax that will surely involve many twists and turns.

As we count down these final weeks of regular season play, the joy of being able to follow a selection of games live during the British evening is felt even more keenly than usual.  This week provides another good selection of games to choose from, including two today.  All times are in BST.  Continue reading

Collins pitches Bracknell to first national title

Following a defeat to the London Mets in the opening game of the 2009 top-tier National Baseball Championship on Saturday, the Bracknell Blazers were left needing to win all three of the games on Sunday to take the national title. They did just that, triumphing 16-4 in the nine-inning final, aided by a complete-game effort from Henry Collins against the pre-tournament favourites, the Richmond Flames. This followed a comfortable victory in Sunday’s first game, in which they eliminated the Herts Falcons, and a more nervy win in the second game, which was a rematch with the Mets. Continue reading

This Week in MLB

ThisWeekMLBIt’s hard to believe we’re almost in September already, and the regular season only has about five more weeks until we know who’ll be partaking in October baseball. As many of you know, September is the month when the regular MLB roster switches from 25 to 40. For those teams not in contention, this gives them the opportunity to showcase some new talent, while for those still embroiled in a pennant race, the extended squad numbers ensure a little more security and could help relieve some tiring or injured players.

Weekly Hit Ground Ball: If the Mets didn’t have bad luck …

Many smart people have devoted countless hours to analysing all aspects of baseball over the years.  They have challenged preconceptions and conceived wisdom, attempting to strip away the vagaries of luck to reach clear conclusions based on solid evidence.  I find much of it interesting and thought-provoking, but I’m afraid the Mets’ 2009 season has forced me to divert from their considered path for some answers.

Sorry: there is no other explanation that I can accept. Omar Minaya must have walked under a ladder outside Citi Field on Friday 13th, before breaking a mirror while opening up an umbrella once he got inside their new ballpark.  He probably knocked over a salt shaker as well for good measure.  Continue reading

Saturday’s early MLB games: Four more home wins?

We’ve got four early games from MLB this evening with the home teams trying to build on their victories from yesterday.  The White Sox and Yankees provide an alternative to the second half of the Man Utd-Arsenal game early on, followed by three intriguing games starting just after 21.00.

18.05. White Sox @ Yankees – Contreras (5-12), Mitre (2-1)
21.05. Rays @ Tigers – Price (6-6), Robertson (1-0)
21.10. Dodgers @ Reds – Haeger (1-1), Maloney (0-2)
21.10. Mets @ Cubs – Parnell (3-6), Dempster (7-7)

All times in BST.

British National Baseball Championships this weekend

It’s the biggest weekend in the British baseball calendar.  Three of the four National Baseball Championships will be held at Roundshaw Fields in Croydon on Saturday and Sunday.  The 2009 champions of the National Baseball League, Double-A and Single-A Leagues will be crowned at the end of two days of great baseball action, with the Triple-A NBC taking place in a week’s time in Harrogate.  Continue reading

You Are the Scorer: Number 43

YouAreScorer

Scenario: The starting pitcher issues a walk to the first batter in the top of the ninth and is relieved. The reliever also issues a walk but then, before pitching to the third batter of the inning, manages to pick off the runner at second. The third batter then hits a 2-run homer, but this is followed by three straight strike-outs.

As the official scorer, how do you assign the earned runs?

A – One each to the starter and reliever.
B – Both to the reliever.

Highlight the text below to reveal the answer:

Answer:
B – Both to the reliever.

Rule 10.16(g) Comment states:
When a pitcher puts runners on base and is relieved, such pitcher shall be charged with all runs subsequently scored up to and including the number of runners such pitcher left on base when such pitcher left the game, unless such runners are put out without action by the batter (i.e., caught stealing, picked off base or called out for interference when a batter-runner does not reach first base on the play).

SWAT keeps on rolling with a 12-0 sweep of the Gas, although a lot of the categories ended up very close. It’s tough on the Gas to come away empty-handed in a week with some very good offensive numbers, but SWAT  had the extra edge thanks to Werth and Miguel Cabrera among others.

Another sweep this week, as things clicked for my Isotopes against the Bangers. Utley, Howard, Dunn and Young put up some big numbers while Tommy Hanson led an in-form pitching staff.

A week after pushing SWAT, Warfare madea good fight of it against the ‘Cuse, losing 7-5. It wasn’t a vintage week for hitters, with the ‘Cuse nicking average by .001 with a .246, but just did enough to take wins, Ks and WHIP thanks to Ricky Nolasco and Rich Harden.

A big win for the Stuff helps Chris after last week’s disappointment, thanks to the bats of Garrett Jones and Carlos Pena and the pitching of Carpenter. Cliff Lee was excellent for the Typos, as were Zobrist, Morgan and McCann.

Bonestalkers are over .500 thanks to a 6-3 win over the Bats. Both teams’ pitchers took a battering this week, with a 5.98 ERA good enough to win, although the duo of Street (four saves) and Sabathia were on top form.

A very close matchup saw the Chasers squeeze past the Whos, with seven categories which could have gone either way. Brian Roberts was the Chasers’ key man, while Yunel Escobar, Youkilis and Ubaldo Jiminez were the pick of the Whos.

It was three hitting and three pitching categories each as the Angels and Giants tied 6-6. Carlos Quentin and Ted Lilly put up good numbers for the Angels, while Mauer and Verlander were the pick of the Giants.

SWAT are now two games ahead of the Isotopes, with the ‘Cuse dropping back to 6.5 games out. The Stuff look good for a top four finish, with an 11 game lead over the fifth-placed Chasers. The Angels are in sixth, two games ahead of the Giants and Bats. Bonestalkers are still in with a shot at the playoffs, although the Whos, Typos and Bangers will need a string of big wins to get back in contention.

This week, SWAT take on the Giants, my Isotopes face the Angels, the ‘Cuse play the Bats and the Stuff tackle the Chasers.

Early MLB games this week: Every day except for Tuesday

We’ve got eleven early games this week from MLB: a big improvement on last week’s group of four.  We only draw a blank on Tuesday and have postseason contenders in action on the other four days.  The games begin with a Cliff Lee start for the Phillies tonight and ends with a game between the Mets and Cubs on Friday.

Roundshaw Hop: Avoiding infamy – an update

Roundshaw-Hop-(128x128)Back in June I wrote a post about Croydon’s woeful season, and in particular whether they would break any single-season records of the wrong kind. Since I was checking this anyway, it wasn’t a great deal of extra effort to put together a table of best and worst single-season team records. I’ve done this here on the GBBSA archive for domestic top-tier stats. The Pirates of ’09 might be relieved to have made only one category each for offence and pitching.
