Early MLB games this week: Action by the dozen

Maybe it’s just me, but I thought many of the series over the weekend just gone were played with an added intensity.  The results of Red Sox-Yankees and Dodgers-Braves series and their like won’t determine anything just yet as there is still so much baseball to be played.  However, every win and loss is starting to take on a little extra significance.

There are twelve early games over the coming working week, with games between Dodgers and Giants, Tigers and Red Sox and Phillies and Cubs taking centre stage.  All times are in BST.  Continue reading

Sunday’s early MLB games: Fourteen games including Braves-Dodgers

The four early games yesterday provided four good contests. The Blue Jays got a walk-off win against the Orioles, the Giants came from 2-1 down to beat the Reds 4-2, the Angels edged a close one against the Rangers 3-2 and the Yankees shutout the Red Sox yet again.

We’ll be treated to more of the same today.  Sunday evening in the UK always gives you the nice problem of not knowing which of many good games to choose from.  Continue reading

Weekly Hit Ground Ball: Roster decisions

We’ve reached the point of the regular season when teams are evaluating their rosters and accepting that decisions have to be made.  It’s not easy for a general manager to look at an off-season acquisition and accept that the move hasn’t worked out as planned.  Some GM’s will hold on in the hope that the player will come good and save their blushes, but more often than not such indecision only makes a bad situation worse.  The best GM’s recognise that a change is needed and then act quickly, even if that means casting aside a popular veteran.

Two such veteran players were collecting their belongings from their respective clubhouse this week.  Continue reading

Saturday’s early MLB games: Four to enjoy

This weekend of MLB action began in exhilarating style last night.  The Red Sox-Yankees 15 inning classic lived up to the series hype (not an easy task), the Padres downed the Mets with a ninth inning grand slam by Everth Cabrera, Ryan Langerhans delivered a walk-off win for the Mariners over the Rays and the Braves recovered from a walk-off loss on Thursday by coming from behind to beat the Dodgers in 12 innings.

We can expect more of the same today, starting with four early games that fans in the UK can enjoy live during the British evening.

Saturday 8 August

18.07. Orioles @ Blue Jays – Tillman (0-0), Cecil (5-1)
21.05. Reds @ Giants – Arroyo (10-10), Zito (7-10)
21.10. Red Sox @ Yankees – Buchholz (1-1), Sabathia (11-7)
21.10. Rangers @ Angels – Millwood (9-7), Weaver (11-3)

All times in BST.  Continue reading

You Are the Scorer: Number 40

YouAreScorer

Scenario: With a runner on third and one out, the batter hits a pop-up behind the second baseman. The fielder tracks back and makes an easy catch and the hitter slams his bat, thick end first, into the paint of the first-base line. Even though the catch represented the second out of the inning, the gloveman thinks that it was the last out and rolls the ball slowly towards the pitcher’s mound. The alert base-runner at third uses the opportunity to come home.

As the official scorer, do you charge the second baseman with an error for allowing the runner to advance to home?

A – Yes.
B – No.

Highlight the text below to reveal the answer:

Answer:
A – Yes.

Rule 10.12(a)(1) Comment states:
The official scorer shall not score mental mistakes or misjudgments as errors unless a specific rule prescribes otherwise. A fielder’s mental mistake that leads to a physical misplay—such as throwing the ball into the stands or rolling the ball to the pitcher’s mound, mistakenly believing there to be three outs, and thereby allowing a runner or runners to advance—shall not be considered a mental mistake for purposes of this rule and the official scorer shall charge a fielder committing such a mistake with an error.

British Baseball on BBC Radio London tonight

British baseball fans can listen to, and contribute to, a fifteen to twenty minute programme about British baseball this evening.  It will be part of a feature about the sport in this country on BBC Radio London at just after 20.00.  The programme will include guest appearances by representatives of British Baseball Federation clubs from the London area and players, coaches and fans are encouraged to join in the fun by phoning or texting into the show.

If you don’t live in the London area then you can listen to the show online.  Most BBC content is only available to UK residents, so unfortunately readers from outside our shores will probably not be able to listen in live.  However, it may well be made available to listen to via a different source at a later date.

Roundshaw Hop: Cain nears 500 Ks

Roundshaw-Hop-(128x128)With four games left to play for Richmond, Cody Cain has a good opportunity of registering his 500th regular-season strike-out in top-tier British baseball. It’s a milestone that will be accompanied by an asterisk, as 127 of the 489 nothced up to date were recorded in the renegade National League Baseball (UK) in Cain’s first two seasons in Britain, 1993 and 1994. Bitterness about the unsanctioned league reamins to this day, but few would dispute that the league was of a quality similar to or better than that of the official top flight. It is for this reason that I believe strongly that the 127 strike-outs should contribute to Cain’s total.

Aside from this approaching milestone, there are several other statistical things to keep an eye on in the closing weeks of the season, as several of the races for category leaders are yet to be decided. Some of the races are looked at below.

ESPN on BT Vision and Top Up TV

There have been a few more developments since the launch of the new ESPN channel on Monday.  They’ve made some additions to their roster of sport, predominantly football with a bit more football and then another load of football on top of that, and more importantly agreed deals with BT Vision and Top Up TV to carry the new channel.

As many expected, it will only be the new ESPN channel on these platforms, with ESPN America just being available in full to Sky and Virgin Media customers.  However, ESPN’s opening week schedule has included a decent amount of MLB action, meaning that the channel might be a better option for some baseball fans than first thought.  Continue reading

All change at the top

BgbFantasySo while the trading deadline sparked a number of moves in MLB, the BaseballGB trade deadline passed without any deals being made. But in an eventful week, the top of the standings has a new look to it.

What a week for the ‘Cuse, who came up big in a matchup with the Stuff. The ‘Cuse put up crazy run and RBI numbers, while hitting .343 for the week. Ellsbury scored 12 runs and Kendry Morales hit five homers and drove in 13. The Stuff put up very respectable numbers, which would usually be good enough to win most matchups, but despite the efforts of Holliday and Juan Rivera, it wasn’t to be.

The ‘Cuse’s week got even better after seeing the Angels defeat SWAT 8-3. Ryan Zimmerman was the pick of the Angels’ hitters while Gavin Floyd and Scott Kazmir were the star pitchers. The Angels will lose out on regular saves after Sherrill’s trade to the Dodgers. Choo helped Swat take average by .001 and his two steals also proved decisive.

The Chasers hit their way to a 9-3 win over the Gas. Ryan Braun had the best overall numbers for the Chasers, while Bailey picked up a trio of saves and Wolf struck out 11. Peralta was the pick of the Gas’s batters, while Latos, Wells and Piniero all pitched well.

My Isotopes held on for a narrow win over Borders Bats. Michael Young, Mark DeRosa and Curtis Granderson provided plenty of power, but the Bats scored more runs, won steals by one and hit for a better average. My pitching staff pitched well enough to take four close categories, with Niemann and Cain the pick of the starters while Nathan and Bell both had good weeks. The Bats had nice weeks from Ichiro and Justin Upton while Soria had a hat-trick of saves.

The Whos and Bonestalkers shared the spoils in a 5-5 tie. The Whos put up impressive run totals, although Bonestalkers took average by .002. The pitching categories also remained close to the end, with Bonestalkers putting up an incredible 61 strikeouts thanks to Lincecum, Beckett and Sabathia. But the Whos took ERA and WHIP thanks to a stingy week from practically the whole pitching staff.

Joe’s Typos got the better of the Giants in an all BaseballGB matchup. Adam Jones was the Typos’ star hitter, with new Phillie Cliff Lee the pick of the pitchers. The Giants, helped by Kendrick and Crawford, hit for a good average but just fell short on power. Verlander had another good week for a skeleton pitching staff.

Another week, another loss for Tribal Warfare, as the Bangers beat them 8-2. Despite losing Berkman, and now Hart, to the DL the Bangers had big weeks from Tulowitzki, cycle hitter Melky Cabrera and Matt Kemp. The pitching categories were very close, but the Bangers took strikeouts, ERA and WHIP thanks to Wainwright, Zambrano and Happ.

The results leave the ‘Cuse at the top of the table, just half a game ahead of SWAT. The Cheddar Chasers leap up to third, with my Isotopes in fourth ahead of the Stuff, with all three teams five games back. The Borders Bats are in sixth, closely followed by Bonestalkers and the Angels. The Giants, Typos, Whos and Bangers still have a chance of cracking the top six.

The next set of fixtures sees the Chasers take on the Isotopes, the Stuff face the Bats and the ‘Cuse against Bonestalkers. SWAT take on Tribal Warfare.
